On July 29th of this year I took my glasses into Bedford Eye Care because one of the arms was about to fall off. I was told the frame was actually broken and a new frame needed to be ordered. The glasses were given back and I was told I would hear from them within a week. On August 6th I called and was told the frames were not in. By this time one of the arms had fallen off and the other arm was hanging by a thread. On the 13th of August I called and, once again, the frames were not in. I no longer could wear the glasses as both arms had now fallen off. I was experiencing headaches from straining my eyes. Kathleen, the person I spoke to on the phone, suggested I come in to see what they could do for me. I went in and met with Leslie. She was a lifesaver! She searched for a suitable pair of frames that my lenses would fit into. I could use these while I waited for the new frames to arrive. It was a lengthy process but she eventually found a pair. Leslie assured me she would look into the whole situation and two days later I was back in and Leslie had my new frames. She quickly replaced the lenses and I was good to go. I can't thank Leslie enough for everything she did to rectify the problem. I was so impressed with her professional manner and her determination to turn a very negative situation into a positive outcome. I have been a patient of Dr Mandleman since the nineties now I am a patient of Dr MacMullin. I have no words for the care and concern for this clinic they are beyond the call of doctors. I just had one of the oddest and iciest experiences at this place. My initial visit was very good with the optometrist but when I came back to choose glasses I had a not so great experience with the sales staff. I was looking around at all of the glasses and had my little tray to place the ones that I had touched to be resanitized and the sales person stood about 2 feet directly behind me following me step for step around the store. I turned around and said "I'm so sorry but I'm feeling uncomfortable with you standing right behind me. Is it ok if I just look on my own for a bit? She said of course and ran to the back room and when she returned I got that super sickly sweet ice cold , "I've got my back up" treatment from her for the rest of the visit. She did offer to give me a private room to try on the glasses with no mask on which was great but kept the icy cold facade. Then when I went back to get the glasses I chose measured and to buy the lenses I had some questions. The first person I was assigned to basically said that glasses are not guaranteed and I have a 90 day period to adjust and that progressives simply are wavy and you could have a problem or I might not have a problem then she just got up and went to the back to get an optician. She had a good attitude but was very clear that they don't guarantee the lenses aren't wavy. The second person who came behaved in that sickly super sweet icy cold behaviour too as I was asking her questions. I asked her to tell me if I could get the same quality progressive lenses that I have now and she said we don't make them here. I'm like ok but can I get the same quality lenses. She was like well do you want to come back? I'm like no I want to know if I can get the same quality lenses? She said they have the best quality but can't guarantee that I won't have a wavy lens. So I'm like my insurance is running out at the end of this month and am working crazy hours right now so I don't have a choice. I have to get whatever you have today. Then I asked if if she knew where I could get my current lenses repaired? She said we won't repair those here. First they carry the brand I'm wearing second I wanted to know where I could get them repaired. I asked ok do you know where I can get them repaired? She said no. I said well maybe somebody else in the office knows. She said they're just front reception they don't know anything. I said maybe you could go and ask an optician or the optometrist where a repair shop is in this city someone in here must know if I have to look I have to make a thousand calls to find out. She said so would I.so she haughtily gets up and takes my glasses and brings a woman out who then says look they're bent. So I said ok no problem give them back to me I'll take care of it. Then she does something and gives them back to me and then boy I got the Royal Ice treatment after that. Unfortunately I had to order a pair of glasses from these people and so left without knowing what kind of lenses they ordered, what kind of treatments were included or how they will work. I actually wanted to know how thick they were and what else was included. I think what I'll do is send my current glasses to my optometrist in Vancouver have him make a new set of lenses in my current frames which they will repair for me because he and his staff have no problem answering questions or wanting to help in any way they can. These people acted like nobody has ever asked them a question and they had no idea how to handle or answer questions. Plus, now I have to call them back to find out what brand lens they ended up even ordering for me. I am not looking forward to picking up my glasses from this place and will definitely not be returning when I need to renew my prescription. My experience at my old optimist in Vancouver was so much better. They explained everything to me and were prepared with the information to answer all the questions I had. Snake Oil Salespeople. Quacks. Charlatans. Rejoice. This clinic has given someone to dislike further than them. This review is a few months in waiting, but I will get to that in a bit. I will admit. I have taken for granted my 20/20 vision for the 28 years I have been around.. and up until recently I have had the fortune of no issues. I had a minor thing show up in the last few years so I finally got it looked at. I was referred to an eye care clinic, and this is the one I chose. My first mistake. You walk into this modern clinic, but first walk through a glasses store set up. I'm not one to pretend that people don't have to make money, but this initially struck me as strange. I get settled in for my appointment, coffee dispenser, and tvs all over the waiting area. I am put through a battery of tests... (well not the complete test battery because one of them is broken and there is only one guy in the NA who can fix it.. believe it? Neither do I) and then reseated for the 'doctor' to see me. She (Dr. Avila Cox) shows up soon there after and is pleasant. She runs me through another couple of tests and finishes with: "Your vision is perfect, but I'd like to see you get glasses" also that she was.. and this was super fast talk "I'm going to get you to do two more tests after putting some drops in, one of the tests is not covered by MSI so if that's a problem." at which point I started to get uncomfortable. No price given.. and well frankly I don't just have cash to throw around. So I spoke up.. telling her I would have to check with my own health insurance to see if it's covered. She accepted that and did the drops, then sitting me in another separate room to wait for the effects to sink in. I was soon thereafter sought out by another 'doctor' and brought into another room. Sat in a chair and told about what the test is I was about to undergo. I interrupted her and asked if this was the test NOT covered by MSI. She nodded and I explained to her calmly.. that I told the other doctor that I needed to check with my personal insurance.. so I didn't want to be billed.. she escorted me back to the waiting room. Embarrassed, hurt, and damn pissed off. I covered my eyes as best I could and went to seek out someone to vent to. Luckily I found my father. I went outside which was just painful for me to vent and get out the frustration this embarrassment and complete awkwardness. I collected myself and went it to address the doctor (Dr. Cox). I told her I felt incredibly uncomfortable, misinformed, misled, and felt like I was cheaply being upsold about the glasses.. and then on top of it, after telling her I wasn't sure about the money aspect of things, she sent me along anyways and was just going to bill me anyways. She was taken aback by my upfront response and was understandably back tracking. She responded saying: "at least I didn't take you out to the store to get fitted for glasses" and really didn't have a response for sending me to get a test they would have no doubt charged me for without my consent. So she finished my appointment off with no more mention of upselling me, and said she would see if the specialist could do the test she charges for, to do it for free. And so that's the reason it took so long to do this, because unfortunately offices like this one have you by the short curly ones. Your health is in their hands... because they put a 'doctors' office in behind the store. When you have 'doctors' offices being paid by glasses companies, you cannot expect impartiality. read more

Stiff upper lip reception and receptionist who does not know how to count and tell time, unfriendly service and does not care about customer. Hopefully this was just a "one of" for this business who does users to mind turning off new clients. Beware if you are late, even just a few minutes. read more

This is a state of the art facility with very competent professionals. My optometrist's assistants were Roberta and Holly and my optometrist was Dr Angela Dobson. The eye exam includes tonometry to measure your eye pressures, a scan of your retinas which allows them to look at the blood vessels and other structures of your retina including your optic disc, macula etc. (Very cool to see what your own eye looks like!) Other components of the exam include peripheral vision testing, randot testing for depth perception, slit lamp examination and of course a check of your prescription for corrective lenses. The cost of this comprehensive exam was $139, most of which was covered by insurance. Dr Dobson is excellent and answered all my questions and concerns to my satisfaction. All said and done, a great experience and I would come back here for all my future eye exams. read more

Not to be dramatic, but we are the hugest fans of Dr. Toby Mandelman and her staff at Bedford Eye Care!! So much so that my wife, even having been living in Toronto for over a decade now, she is STILL her eye doctor! Dr. Mandelman and her staff always go above and beyond and really take the time to listen to her about any concerns or questions we may have. Dr. Mandelman is also always getting the most cutting edge equipment in to the office and using the most current techniques. She is always learning and passing that knowledge on to her clients. She is also one of the most kind people you'll ever meet. We are her biggest fans. We trust her absolutely and completely. Also, the staff who work at Bedford Eye Care are really lovely and kind. We always find them welcoming and very helpful. We think it is telling that most of the time you can recognize people who have been working there for years and years. Everyone from the front desk staff to the folks you see before the eye doctor (I forget their official title! Is it assistant?! I'm not sure... but they're always wonderful and patient) is just great. We cannot say enough about Dr. Mandelman. If you were on the fence about going to see her, get off the fence and GO!!! Probably the absolute worst experience I have ever had with a professional office. My family and I have been a patient since 1999. Going for regular check ups. We moved to Toronto for 3 years in 2017 and while we were there we had an regular eye exam and the moved back to Halifax. Advised office of our exam and was scheduled for appropriate recall. July 2019 I got a red swollen eye. Saw walk in and was give. Antibiotics. Helped but lump didn't go away. After some research realized I might have sty. Called Bedford eyecare and explained situation. They would not allow me to see a doctor without the full eye report from doctor in Toronto. I explained I was about to go to Europe and really thought it should be checked and I was not due for a full eye exam (my insurance once covers ever 2 years and I had one in June 2018). They were adamant that I needed the report or a full eye exam. I said I would see the doctor and if they felt it was required I would have one but they would not allow me to see doctor The office manager was rude condescending and truly made me way more upset then a professional office should. I advised her of how rude she was being and she became slightly more polite. I was very upset that my eye doctor couldn't check a sty for me as I had been going there since 1999. I am 57 years old and have no reason to lie about my regular eye exam. I told her this seemed like a money grab and she replied she couldn't comment. So much stress for me. I am currently looking to move my whole family to another eye doctor. I would not recommend them to anyone after the stress they caused me. . read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Mandelman for more than 10 years and I am very pleased with the care and services I have received. My impression is one of friendly professionalism and competence. In fact in my experience all staff members are friendly, helpful and highly competent. Bedford Eye Care uses the latest technology and the instruments and devices are updated regularly. Eye health seems to be the focus of an exam. They use an instrument that takes high resolution digital images of your eyes. By comparing current images with those recorded during previous exams, changes can be identified and tracked. This is how a minor hemorrhage was identified in one of my eyes. It turned out to be nothing but the incident highlighted to me how important it is to deal with an optometrist who keeps her practice current. read more

Bedford eye care is one of the hardest places to contact / get into. They never answer voice mails and they are often closed when they advertise they are open. For example on Saturdays they are open till 1pm granted it isn't a holiday weekend or July or August. Well today June 25th a non holiday weekend I went there at noon and they were closed despise online adverts and their sign on the front door. It's just very unprofessional. I'm really disappointed by them since their eye doctors are great but the company is very inconsistent. I am forced to switch eye doctors and find one that is more reliable. I wish I could give them less than one star because they have wasted my time on more then one occasion read more

For regular check-ups, this place is expensive for eye exams. Frame selection is ok...but pretty limited compared to some other places I've been. Fitting service and frame selection help is poor. If you know exactly what you like and know how to fit frames this may be the place for you...for most though, premium prices and bottom draw service lost my business for good. Had to go back twice to get a simple nose pad replaced and my frames still don't fit right. read more

I must first start off by apologizing for the long review but it is very important for me to highlight and thank this amazingly talented and professional group of doctors and staff. I have been a patient of Dr. Mandleman since she first started her practice and had the pleasure to watch it grow step by step, It is a truly wonderful first class operation. I was soon heading back to Nova Scotia for a quick vacation and had been experiencing some very drastic changes in my vision. In the province we are now living I had an eye examine and had gotten new glasses at the first of the year because the changes that were happening, I went back a couple of times and mentioned something did not seem quite right but was told that with my first time wearing progressive lenses it takes some getting used to. As my vision continued to deteriorate I became more concerned and called my trusty friends at Bedford eye care and told them I was heading home in a week or so and would love to bee seen by a doctor if possible. Theresa as always was more than helpful and although Dr Mandelman was away that week she was able to squeeze me in to see Dr. McLeod. After a very through examination by Dr McLeod and staff it was determined that there was something concerning going on outside of a prescription issue and recommended I see a specialist as soon as I returned home as she suspected it maybe something interfering with the optic nerve. Wow was she right on track, a benign tumor of significant size was found that was causing vision as well as many other health related issues and surgery was preformed within a couple of weeks. I am writing this from my hospital bed and I am extremely happy and grateful to say that my eye sight has been restored and the other issues are now being treated as well. To say i am truly grateful to the talent that is available at Bedford Eye Care is an understatement. Going home I knew that if a got into see them that they would get to the root of my issues and I'm happy to say they did not disappoint.
