My family and I went to Gebhardt's and it was wonderful. The waitress was very attentive to our large party. The only downside was the wait for the food. It was quite a long wait. The wait was worth it. It is probably the best chicken house. The only issue I had was the chicken wasn't salted. It just needed a little more seasoning for it to be perfect. Best German potato salad out of all the chicken houses. FYI: the place does not accept credit cards. And it is a little dingy. But the food is great. read more

First things first, you must come on a Monday! I went here tonight with one of my friends who attends Pitt State University. He mentioned he went by himself a couple of weeks before and had to wait a bit for a table and for his food but it was well worth it. So I told him when I came to Pittsburgh I had to try this no matter what. Let me tell you something, I'm so glad we did this! We got lucky and when we walked in there was an open table for two...remember you have to seat yourself because these folks are bustin' their butts! I highly recommend the Chicken & Noodles (only Mondays) and instead of getting a side get extra mashed potatoes. If you want to be gluttonous like me, go ahead and add 2 wings or some chicken backs because their fried chicken is extremely tasty! One thing worth mentioning, it is cash only so make sure you stop somewhere on your way in to grab some cash because there is not an ATM close by. Overall, this is a must-visit if you ever find yourself in Southeast Kansas! Kudos to the team running that restaurant and running it RIGHT! read more

Listen! I've been eating Barto's chicken since I was 5yo and I will never stray. But this gd chicken is so close to beating Barto's that I can't stand it! I was told that this chicken restaurant beats all others in the area but something must have changed. The gizzards were so tough that 3 of us almost broke a tooth on the first bite. We had to throw the order out. Unfortunately we ordered take out so we couldn't send them back. The fried chicken was only slightly better but it was dry and not a lot of meat on them. When I called the person who answered had no idea how the chicken is sold and what the prices are. Probably not a good idea to put a new girl on the phone. Get the fried chicken livers. They are awesome. Get the onion rings too. We all enjoyed our fried chicken liver even more than the fried chicken. Or maybe we were too full from eating all those livers and onion rings before our chicken arrived. I was not a fan of their version of the German potato salad. But, I did like their slaw. Always freshly fried chicken. The care they put into packaging to-go orders is tremendous. They put your chicken on top of paper towels in a foil pan and cover with foil and vent it also so it stays crispy and hot. Put it all in a nice paper sack with handles. They do not accept credit cards so no 5th star. Other than that: For the second time we Californians and local family ate at Gebhardt's when visiting at Christmas time. Great place for that and other families were doing the same. They had set up long tables for the big groups. Nearby Pittsburg has more gourmet choices but the chicken and other dishes here are excellent, HEARTY comfort food. Huge portions!!! This time I took note of local's preference and had chicken fingers. The order included four but they are big and two were plenty. They brought BBQ sauce at my request. Most preferred gravy that I believe is always served along side, or maybe it was requested. Others enjoyed livers and gizzards. The huge plates of onion rings ordered as appetizers for the table were crispy and yummy. Our waitress was very efficient and friendly. Weather was cold and snowing the day we went so the restaurant wasn't as packed as usual. We will eat here again next visit. read more

I was told this place was better than Chicken Annie's, well it's not. First off the service is not great, sure the waitress is upbeat and nice but only gave great service to half our table and I was on the not so great side, there was 15 of us with 7 of them ranging from 2-16 and I sat by my 2 and 3 year old who wanted to sit with their cousins and I was treated as one of the children. I was never asked if I wanted an appetizer and they delivered the other appetizers before I even realized they had been ordered. I was almost passed by when ordering the entrees but my mil mentioned that I was ordering for three other kids, I'm 30 so it's not like I'm a really young looking! I ordered dark meat a leg and a thigh which were both super tiny, the thigh was the size of a golf ball and the leg was about twice the size of half a chicken wing yet again making me feel like I ordered a kids meal which actually was bigger than my meal! I had to ask a different waitress for a togo box because yet again I was ignored, the other half of my table were already loading up their togo boxes while I had to wait for one. I also ordered my husband food to go because he was not able to go with us and he loves german potato salad so that's a side I ordered for him, he was only able to take one bite because it was so sickeningly sweet, like a mouthful of sugar and his grilled chicken breast looked like about half a normal sized breast. Overall go to Chicken Annie's down the road, you will have a much better experience and there's more seating. read more

Well, first of all, the other two are closed, and secondly, I hear they have an amazing chicken and noodle special on Monday. Excellent value. It cost at least 25% less than the previous two restaurants mentioned. And in my opinion, they have the best onion rings out of the three. Why only 4 stars? Well, it's not because of the decor. Yes, it is outdated but that doesn't really matter to me as long as its clean and the food is good. It's because I had to salt everything. That's really the only thing I could knock 'em on, and for others, low sodium may be a positive. The best tip I could give you is to leave your American Express at home. Drove up to Pittsburg to try this place out. I arrived around 12:30 and went inside only to find out they are cash only. No ATM anywhere close by, so drove back to Frontenac to get some money. After my 30 minute delay to get money I arrived to try it again. I went inside and found about 25 tables, about 1/4 filled and about 6 or 7 employees working in the front. There were no menus on the tables, and I didn't know if I was to seat myself or be seated. I stood there trying to catch the eye of the 4 or 5 employees who walked RIGHT BY me several times none of who acknowledged my existence. Apparently you get service if you know the people there or have been there before. I stood there for over 5 minutes and was totally ignored, so I decided I would rather spend my money elsewhere and went to Chicken Annie's. One star because Yelp won't let me put zero stars. read more
