Quick Review: Overall 3 stars, because it's a chain, doesn't matter if it's a Denny's or an I-Hop, the food is pretty production line quality. If you've ever been to classic diners like the ones featured on Guy Fieri's such as Sam's #3 in Aurora Colorado (miss those days living out in the Rockies), then you know that special something when you sit down and all the locals come out and congregate for brunch...well didn't get that feel here. However, 5/5 stars to the chef. Let me explain. And don't get me wrong, the server was fantastic. The setting was in the retail section of the Joplin Petro Truck Stop, being a fairly dim but rather quiet corner. In all my years of trucking, on the road, whether it be at a Denny's in a truck stop, or a Black Bear diner, Waffle House, another Iron Skillet, or i-Hop, whenever I order medium rare on a steak, it would always end up on opposite ends of the spectrum-- either very well done OR bloodshot rare. So when my server brought me a true medium rare steak, there was this aura of sacredness to it. I simply didn't expect the chef was going to make it to that likeness...and he proved me wrong. It just shows, that there are still individuals on planet Earth that know how to grill up an everyday New York steak and not destroy it. , Thank you Jesus this art form is still alive and well. But of course going back to the quality and satisfaction levels of eating the food, I still want to stick to a 3. It's a truck stop, it's a chain, it tastes very manufactured production line quality. Like if you walked into any Flying J or Pilot, whatever they have in the hot food trays, it's on par with that. Basically the Caesars Salad, the Mashed Potatoes, but the steak was how a New York strip would taste but on the saltier side. Stopped in for lunch at the Iron Skillet inside Joplin 44 and it was exactly what we needed after a long morning on the road. Iron Skillets are pretty common at truck stops, but this one really stood out for the service and consistency. Hot food, quick service, and our drinks were never empty. It's always such a nice break to sit down and enjoy a real meal instead of grabbing deli or fast food. The menu is familiar, the portions are solid, and everything came out fresh and fast. Great staff, great service, and a perfect spot to relax for a bit before getting back on the highway. We'll definitely be stopping again. read more

Always wanted to try this truck stop - and it's ok - just not the greatest by any means. It's open 24 hrs...which is worth something these days. As for the food: - French toast was pretty good. Had a good balance of flavor for French toast. The bacon was pretty good bacon. - Meat loaf was pretty good. A good sized portion. - Mashed potatoes and gravy: a downer with serving instant mashed potatoes. Then the gravy, is some pre-powder form gravy, that wasn't too good. Food was pretty good! We ordered the chicken fried steak which comes with garlic bread and two sides. We got tater tots and mashed potatoes with country gravy. Tater tots were soo crispy!! Straight shame that truck drivers who decide to eat a warm meal after driving all day can't because you have limited seat and no truckers only area and two hour wait. But you are fast to sit a group of non drivers that showed up after we did. read more

My husband's a trucker so we've eaten at the Iron Skillet before, last time was in Oklahoma City..nothing new. This is the first time at this location though. They are set up about the same way..I did like the brick wall behind the cashier. We brought 5 people with us this time and it was about 8:15-8:30pm. We were staying at the Sleep Inn next door and this place takes 20% off for the hotel key cards. Not only was the Petro awesome but the Iron Skillet never fails us. This time I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, Texas toast and a trip to the salad bar, 2 people got the all you can eat buffet, though my son was full after just 1 trip. My other son got the bacon cheeseburger with tator tots and my brother ordered some burritos I believe. We asked for our drinks in large to go cups. The waitress said the to go cups weren't very big and instead brought us each a large glass and pitchers for all the different drinks, talk about going out of the way! The food was perfect and was so filling we were thankful our hotel was right next door. Awesome place to eat for comfort food. Great food, great staff...this the place to go! read more

We happened to be in Joplin for an appointment and stopped by the Iron Skillet to green a bite. It is located in a travel stop/truck stop so it can be a little challenging to get into the parking lot. The restaurant is more like a coffee shop with counter seating and small booths. Due to the time we went (2:30 pm) it wasn't very busy. Our server was a little dynamo and right on top of everything. She brought us the best Arnold Palmer teas that we have had in a very long time. The ice tea to lemonade ratio was perfect. Plus she brought a small pitcher to set on the table, so we could do our own refills. Really liked that! We both ordered the Southern Buttermilk Fried Chicken Bacon sandwich. It was good, although mine was slightly burnt. However, the chicken inside was still moist and not dried out. The bacon was crispy and it came with a side. Recommend getting some Mayo or something to add to the sandwich or it my be kind of dry. I ordered a side of ranch, and that was perfect. We both ordered tater tots that were deliciously crunchy. Even hubby ate all of his! The building the restaurant is in has all kinds of souvenir and treats for shopping and continuing on your journey. Could have spent hours there! Will definitely return as we have to go to Joplin frequently. read more

Excellent service!!!! Waitresses were very personable. Took time to relate with us and joke with us. The food we had was hot and delicious. I had the fried fish basket, what a treat. Very lightly breaded, you could see the outline of the fish. A real joy to me Excellent experience for us on our travel. read more
