If my policy explicitly defines my deductible as $250, by what ethical or legal mechanism can Geico now demand $2,500? Can any company simply override its own written terms when doing so suits its financial interest? If so, do we still live in a society governed by contracts--or by corporate fiat? Geico insists that this situation falls under "policy," "procedure," or "standard." But again: if a person demands more money than was agreed upon, lies about it, and uses leverage to force payment, we call it fraud. We call it coercion. So why does a corporation enjoy legal and moral immunity when committing the same act on a larger scale? Let's now ask the second foundational question: What is insurance for, if not to provide assistance in a time of need? If I am paying monthly premiums with the promise of support in the event of harm, and then--upon suffering harm--I am denied that support unless I pay ten times what was promised, is this not a form of economic violence? Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu wrote of "symbolic violence"--the subtle forms of coercion embedded in institutions, language, and norms that people are trained not to question. The insurance industry thrives on precisely this kind of manufactured compliance: I am not supposed to fight back. I am not expected to read the fine print. I am conditioned to accept the lie that Geico "can't" reduce the deductible, rather than the truth: they won't--because doing so would disrupt a profitable pattern. This leads to another essential question: Is Geico unable to reduce the deductible, or unwilling? This is a crucial distinction. If there were a federal regulation, a binding legal statute, or a universal mandate preventing deductible reduction under certain circumstances, that would be one thing. But there is no such statute. Deductibles can and have been waived or reduced at the discretion of insurance providers. The fact that Geico refuses to do so here is not evidence of constraint. It is evidence of strategic cruelty--a chosen refusal to help someone in distress, despite the clear capacity to do so. In this case, Geico is externalizing the cost of my accident onto me--not because they have no choice, but because they can. There is no financial hardship on their end. They will not suffer. In fact, they will likely raise my premiums after this incident, ensuring that they profit directly from the very harm they refused to mitigate. So again I ask: If a corporation benefits from your misfortune while actively obstructing relief, what role is it playing in your life? Is it a protector? A partner? Or a predator? Forensic psychology helps us understand this further. We know from the study of institutional behavior that when organizations begin to prioritize self-preservation over human well-being, they begin to exhibit traits commonly associated with sociopathy: lack of empathy, deceit, manipulation, and a singular focus on gain at any cost. Geico is not simply failing to help--it is choosing not to help, knowing full well the psychological, financial, and logistical hardship this imposes. Behavioral psychology tells us that people in crisis--especially after accidents--experience impaired decision-making, cognitive overload, and heightened emotional vulnerability. That's precisely when Geico strikes. That is the moment when people are most likely to accept unfair terms, to give in, to stop fighting. And that is no accident.
