This place was on an eat like a local food tour, and yes this was the second gelato I'd had for the day... According to our guide, he explained that this place was selected not only because it's still family owned...but in addition to organic ingredients...they've still held true to the process of making gelato, smaller batches without an excessive amount of sugar added as a preservative. This particular place had about 20 flavors to choose from. I chose a double scoop of coffee in a cup and my wife had a scoop of mango on a cone. Mine was smooth and creamy with a bold coffee flavor with espresso beans here and there to add some crunch. It was excellent! The woman working here was very nice and spoke English. This was my first gelato experience in Italy and, while it was better than anything I've had in the States, I later had better at other places in Italy, hence the 4 star rating. While Gelatoteca Suso ruled the first half of our trip, Ca'D'oro dominated the second half. I implore you to try their ricotta flavor with sesame and honey. Now let me assure you that I'm not one of those guys that normally goes for that flavor profile for dessert but it looked that it coaxed me out onto a limb where I was content to stay for the remainder of the trip. I had at least three servings in the next two days, mentally rearranging the contents of my stomach to make room for it after multiple big dinners. Really impressed with the variety of flavors here. Then again, I don't know how many gelaterias I've tried and been satisfied with because they're all good! They have four cup sizes, with a small holding only up to one flavor (sadly not like other places where you can get two flavors in a small) and medium with two flavors, etc. They offer all the basic flavors like pistachio, tiramisu, cherry, etc., but I went for the ricotta with honey and sesame. SO good! My friend stuck with their typical hazelnut flavor and enjoyed it. We also tried their gianduiotto dessert which was REALLY yummy and melted so fast (offered hazelnut or amaretto flavors) You have the option of trying it with whipped cream, but we decided not to (as we had a smoothie in the other hand). When it comes to gelato, there are a million choices everywhere you go in Italy. Venice is no exception, There even are ice cream parlors right next to one another. They are all good, it just comes down to flavor preference. I order banana gelato everywhere I go, and so if I don't see i at a particular location, I move on. So far, my favorite banana ice cream can be found here. That is the only pro, the cons are, there is no sitting available at all, and you only get two flavors with the medium size as opposed to three as we've gotten everywhere else. There are lots of gelato shops in the city. This one stands out. They sell only gelato (and an assortment of different tiramisu, from classic to pistachio or other flavors). Truly outstanding flavor and quality. The pistachio tastes like roasted pistachio nuts, mango tastes like ripe fruit; coconut is loaded with shredded coconut, best mint gelato I've ever tasted, rich dark coconut, cappuccino, and just tried their amaro which is sweet cream with sour cherries...beats black cherry ice cream from the States easily. I will admit it. I do sometimes have location bias. When I see a restaurant in a really touristy location, I will often pass it by because I just assume that it is not good. I have, unfortunately, missed out on some really good places. But! After being burned by Moe's Clam Chowder in Portland, it is hard for me to change my ways. But I made a small step in that direction by eating here. This is located in a pretty busy area, and in my opinion, is pretty touristy. The gelato however tastes very authentic. The flavors were rich and vibrant and the texture soft and pillowy. I will say that I do not think it is as good as San Stae, but it was still REALLY good. The price is right on par with what we were seeing from other places, so you are not really seeing any additional benefit for going here other than you may be in the area for some shopping. I am not sure if it is worth a special trip to eat here, but if you are in the area - it is a good place for delicious gelato. read more
