Conveniently located by Berwick Street market (which is how I first noticed it), The Lounge is a cool little salon adjacent to the sex shops of Walker's Court. I made a booking with Ferdia through their seamless online reservation system, which I wish all salons offered. Their system allows you to select your hairdresser (or use the first available) and the service(s) you are after, choose the date you would like to come in, and then it shows you all available times that you can then instantly book. Simple and stress-relieving. The first time I came to see Ferdia, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my hair but knew that my partially grown bangs looked atrocious. Her styling and cutting knowledge became readily apparent as she cut my hair into a beautiful "lob" with sideswept bangs (this was early 2013) that accentuated my cheekbones. I was not expecting such a great cut, especially at such reasonable prices. The offer of complimentary coffee, tea, and freshly-delivered brownies improved an already enjoyable experience. Everyone on the staff is very friendly and professional. I have never had anything but a haircut here, but would trust them with anything based on the looks I have seen come out of the salon. Even though I no longer work in Soho, I will make a trip out there just to get my hair cut with Ferdia (okay, and maybe to squeeze in a bit of shopping while I'm at it).

I actually cried about the colour when I got home and I've never actually done that before. Embarrassing. Ouch. He attempted to correct it at a second visit but things were still unfortunately nowhere near what I had wanted. I spoke with Michelle, the fantastically attentive manager, throughout this and when the first correction failed, she finally put me in touch with Lottie, who has gotten me closer to my desired colour and whom I will be seeing from now on. Hopefully in another visit or two she'll have my colour where I wanted it to be. Everyone at the salon went above and beyond to help me out throughout all this, and that's incredibly rare, especially when something fails to meet your expectations. They've gone the extra step to make sure that I'm with a stylist who understands what I'd like out of my hair, and I feel like I'm in very good hands with both Lottie and Michelle in general. As for the salon itself, it's a small footprint with an upstairs (for cutting and clipping) and a downstairs (for colour and washing), located just opposite the Co-Op on Berwick Street. The general feel is very unpretentious and relaxed, with a hip vibe, good energy, and cheerful staff. In terms of accessibility: the stairs down to the wash stations and colouring area are very steep and quite narrow, so if you have any mobility or balance issues, they really might not be for you. The wash station chairs are also a little awkward, and I wouldn't recommend them if you have any neck or upper spine issues. Lighting throughout is exposed/bare fluorescent tubes. Tea, coffee, and sweet nibbles (usually brownies, but this time of year mini mince pies) as well as beer etc are complimentary and a really lovely touch. Prices are in line with the neighbourhood, and the products used are indie brands. So in essence, after a somewhat disastrous start, I now feel like I've actually found an excellent stylist to take care of me. I'll update this review (hopefully with pictures) after my next visit in a couple months' time.

I was a regular here for a while and was always happy with the service I received. My hairdresser at the time couldn't understand me completely well (speaking in a fast Glaswegian accent doesn't help) but she was always friendly and bright. It's probably best to bring pictures with you but B:ZAR also have a selection of great Japanese and Western fashion magazines to look through for your next hair inspiration. I am definitely going to go back at some point. The price is really reasonable and you even get a Shiatsu head and shoulder massage which is a really nice bonus. If you're looking for something a little different, B:ZAR is worth a visit.

My last throw of the dice took me into Sam's Unisex hairdresser. First thing I noticed were Afro-Caribbea men cutting afro hair. This is a good sign. This relaxed me and I could see the attention to detail straight away, in those that went before me. When it was my turn I felt confident and this confidence was repaid. I am now a loyal customer of Sam's. The banter is friendly and welcoming, the hair cuts are slick and professionally done, and it costs £10. AWESOME!!

While you wait, you are offered a complimentary drink (or two, or three)- ranging from wine to beer to tea or coffee. I've had both the tea and the red wine, and was pleased with both! I had both Mel the first time, and a lovely red headed girl the second time but I unfortunately can't remember her name. Anyway, both were great! They both listened to exactly what I wanted and followed suit. They were easy to talk to and made the experience relaxing and fun. They play great music inside as well, and the wait for a stylist is very short (or perhaps feels that way with all the wine I was drinking, ha!)

When I arrived, I asked the young man working there if they accepted walk-ins - yes; is anyone available now? - no; Ok, is there any availability later today? - maybe; Do you know around what time maybe? - 3pm, but I'm not sure; Alright, should I just come back after 3 or can I book something now? - I don't know, they'll probably be all booked by then. At this point I just walked away, they obviously didn't want my business. I understand I'm a walk-in so can't get preferential treatment over their customers with an appointment, and I get that I have no idea of how busy they are. But he already told me there might be an opening after a certain time and didn't bother to check who was free, thus not allowing my any services. This is at 9am, he literally just opened the doors to the shop, and no other customers were there. If you're fully booked, just say you're fully booked. I can understand that. Again, I can't attest to how they do hair as I wasn't even given the opportunity to even get my foot through the door. One star for the bad service by the front desk. I know this doesn't change much for their regular customers, but hopefully new customers can bring their business some where they are wanted.

So laid back, he was sitting across the street in a doorway having a fag while I was getting my hair washed. I was a little bemused and terrified through the whole experience. I was never entirely sure that he hadn't spent his career to this date in a poodle parlour. He ruffled my hair a lot, excessively so, it was quite funny actually. He spent an awful long time gazing at me, sniping away and staring at me. No-one this good looking has ever looked at me this intensely. He cut and cut and cut, then got out a razor. No one has ever used a razor on my hair in my entire life! This haircut is precise! F#@k it's short! I'm not sure how he ever thinks I will style it. Seriously he might be the worst hairdresser in the world or the best, am too dazzled to decide. Headmasters lose a star because he ghd'd my hair instead of blow drying it straight, which is the laziest thing to do. A good hairdresses can dry it poker straight. However I think they may have shot themselves in the foot with the groupon idea, because it's obvious they are so booked up that although slick, the operation feels like you're on a conveyor belt. Booked in by one person, sat down by another, hair consultation, treatment by yet another person... you get the picture. I understand that they need to get everyone seen but it felt terribly impersonal and I felt that if I'd asked for anything more drastic than a trim, they'd have been rushed to fit it in. Also, I didn't notice any difference after the treatment - but then I'm not sure what difference I was supposed to see, as noone explained to me exactly what it was. I didn't get a head massage when shampooing either. Sad face. I won't be back because it's expensive and they didn't sell ithemselves well on this occasion.

The staff were really nice and attentive, they give a 15 min head massage while they are shampooing your hair (ooo ya!) and the seats while having your hair washed are massaging as well... I almost fell asleep it was that good and relaxing. When I left I can honestly say, my hair has NEVER looked better. Wish you could get this kind of service everyday at £28, but it was a taster of the better life... if I only I could afford this place more often! IF you can, enjoy!!! :)
