But a good Yelper doesn't hoard the knowledge, and the physical location of the park is still going to be off the beaten path, so I can be confident in sharing why Oatka Creek Park is a gem. Oatka Creek Park is a little hard to find if you haven't been there before. Luckily, Waze actually recognized the address and got us there in one piece. Basically, you go through an intersection and the park is right there. There was a decent sized parking lot right away, and down the road another, closer to the trail. It's your call which lot is best. The main trail is a loop around the park, the goal to get you down to Oatka Creek itself. And let me say, it's worth the hike. Moving water is the best, for so many reasons. It's not the fastest moving creek, but it's a great one to stop at and take in the sights. I found the trail to be fairly simple, a little uphill and downhill at times, but not the strenuous kind (at least in my eyes). You could even go on horseback if you wanted, and I've seen the horses on the trail. It's a good one for horses, but be advised that with horses comes the not so little presents they leave behind. Watch where you step. Oatka Creek Park is a true gem, so I don't feel too bad about letting the world know about it. Somehow, I feel the serenity and woodland creatures won't go anywhere on a day with more hikers and horses than usual.

GPS/Locations: Waterfall: (N 42.66758 / W 77.58907) Parking: (N 42.66833 / W 77.59166) Directions: Located on the south-east end of Hemlock Lake, on the east side of Rt. 15A. Take I-390 south to Rush and follow 15A south along Hemlock Lake. After passing Johnson Hill Road, Reynold's Gully will be a mile down on your left. Parking: Park in the small dirt area near the gully. Space for a few cars.

We just guessed and went upstream based on other reviews we had read. If you go, water shoes might be best and plan on walking up the stream. If no water shoes, don't go after rains - it will be too muddy to make much of the walk and parts of the trail will be covered. Even on the best days you're doing some creek crossing at the waterfalls etc. long story short your feet will likely get wet here. All that said it offers wonderful views of a few waterfalls and a beautiful walk through a gorge. Definitely worth the trip!

The day we went, it was kind of muddy which made it that much harder. I have participated in indoor rock climbing for years but this scared me. There were times were my full body weight were on these ropes. Ropes someone else tied, who knows how well and how long ago! The fall itself is stunning but it is a little dangerous. Naturally there was tons of trash down there as well. If you take the path to the left, it is a easy walk to the top of the falls. Very beautiful and easy!

Tons of small animals as well. Very peaceful and quite. I recommend grabbing a coffee and going early in the am.

During Autumn it's breathtakingly beautiful and if you want to experience it all during one day I'm sure biking would be doable. Now if you keep going instead of veering off to Rush, which is gorgeous during the Fall, you will end up at some kind of junction for the Lehigh Valley Trail, which basically has a mini-museum about trains. The east-west part of the trail has a number of bridges which are interesting, but mainly worth while of either you're a history buff or you're like me and enjoy having a sense of continuity with your running adventures. There is also a stretch of trail that runs from Genesee Valley Park to right before the RIT Barnes & Noble, and that one is okay. I really wish that part of the trail connected all the way to the one near Veterans Memorial Park, but what can you do.

It is a little tricky to find and negotiate where the best views are, which I think is what keeps people away and maybe slightly intimidated. I took on this park after exploring the Maplewood Rose Garden, and found that jaunt to be perfectly doable, if you're thinking about making an afternoon of it. When I was there, we took some time to explore the artwork, which includes some great and unbiased pieces about Rochester's past. We hopped a small railing to get up close and personal with the falls, which provides a great view. If I am remembering correctly there are some tents and a community making their home in this part of the park, so just be aware of that. I highly recommend taking your next park trip to Lower Falls!

We haven't been…read moreto Silver Lake before, and decided to make this our destination to enjoy the scenic autumn lake. Silver Lake State Park itself is pretty small, and consists of a large parking area, a boat launch, a public restroom, a small playground, a small pavilion, and about a dozen or so picnic areas, each with a table, grill, and firepit. There is a small dock, I'm guessing for kayakers to use, which we sat on to enjoy the lake breezes; it was a very warm fall 85-degree day when we visited, so this was nice. Silver Lake itself is bigger than I thought it would be, probably a decent, roomy lake if you are a boater, maybe comparable to one of the smaller Finger Lakes. We didn't fish this day, but there were several fisherpeople along the shores too, still with plenty of room to spread out. One thing lacking from this park is any nature trails. We walked the perimeter of the picnic areas, and didn't find any trailheads. Since one of our favorite things to do as a fam' is what we call "adventure walks" through the woods, no trails here was a let-down. The main draw is really the boat launch, or if you want to picnic with lake views. Admission was $6, paid at a self-service terminal when you come in. Since they did have an open public bathroom facility (that was pretty clean), this was fair. If you're in the Silver Lake area looking for a picnic, fishing, and/or kayaking/boating spot, Silver Lake State Park will probably suit you well.

We started on the wood-area of the park, walking toward the creek and water falls at the Glen itself. The round trip of the hike was just a sliver more than 2 miles but it was an easy hike, with just two sections of up/down hill-climbing. Very beautiful and picturesque, with an amazing tunnel under the Amtrak tracks. Very much recommended for a short, morning hike if you don't mind the drive out.

This hike is located in the High Tor Wildlife Management area. There are two ways to enjoy this…read morehike. One entrance is a signed parking lot by route 245 the trail is mainly a creek bed. You follow the trail and you can climb up the falls l, but they are slippery and there are no ropes anymore. The second entrance is in for of 245 a small pull off with a small management sign and you can see the gate down a dirt road. There is a parking lot, or you can just park off the road if you don't have a vehicle that can make it down the road. You will start in the woods and follow the trees marked with yellow and blue. It goes right and switch backs around to a bridge. Now you can cross the bridge and take that trail or you can follow the creek bed to a falls with a small pool. Again very steep and slippery be careful. I would not suggest this hike for small children. Love this hike, but it is hard. It was also very buggy. Lots of salamanders, millipedes, and beautiful falls.
