I was battling an eye infection and came to Geneva Eye Clinic because it is close to my home and I thought since it was a medical issue, my insurance would cover it. When I arrived, I was told they don't take either my eye or my medical insurance and I would need to pay cash. Okay, fine; at this point I am desperate so I pay the $265 exam fee. Dr. Hawkins saw me and said she thought I have a tear duct infection but didn't want to treat it "aggressively" with oral antibiotics yet. So she gave me eye drops and told me to follow up in 2 days... Here we are, 2 days later following up (oh, and there is a $145 fee for a follow up) with a raging infection in my eye, sitting in the waiting room waiting for a doctor. I've been a patient at Geneva Eye Clinic for the past three years and originally thought very highly of their services. However, my recent experience has completely changed my opinion. After my contact lens prescription expired, I called to schedule an eye exam and was told the next available appointment was over a month out. I asked if I could get a temporary box of contacts or even trials to hold me over until my appointment, but I was informed that trials are distributed based on revenue - since I hadn't spent any money with them in the past year, they said they couldn't help me in any way. A terrible experience here when my husband had an appointment with Dr. Winkler. She became upset when I asked questions about my husband's care and demanded that I trust her. I had just met her! My husband has long-term complicated health issues, and I have been to dozens of medical appointments with him and never experienced such immaturity in a caregiver. My husband first saw Dr. Keen, and she sent him to an ENT who had no idea why we needed the visit to him. We have been trying to solve a problem that needs surgery for months now, and the medical staff at this office have done the opposite of helping solve it--they have made it worse. You feel like you're on an assembly line, no comfortable feeling when you're there. Equipment is old and has less than the local "My Eye Dr.". They have an "associate" do most of the exam and the doctor comes in to do a couple more tests, I prefer the doctor do the whole exam. I have a Prism in my prescription and it's been the same of the last 12 years, so what did the doctor do without a complete prism exam, changed it and now I can't see anything in my Peripheral vision and I have to go back and have my glasses remade. Last, I'm diabetic so they bill the exam to my health insurance instead of my eye insurance, even though they don't do anything different, so I get to pay $150 instead of $15. My son and I both went to Geneva Eye Clinic and we were both very disappointed in our service. The tech an Dr. who were with us seemed to have a hard time with our health conditions/PMH and focused more on that rather than making sure we both got the proper prescriptions. We both require additional visits to get the prescription correct. They also turned us into collections shortly after I received my explanation of benefits from my insurance without giving us the chance to pay. My review is so poor I've waited two weeks to calm down. 2 weeks ago Friday afternoon My OS was sore and red. I put a warm compress on it and fell asleep. I awoke at 445pm and it was WORSE! I looked up the clinic on line because I am a long time patient of Dr. King, whom I adore and respect. He has cleared a style for me and done my LASIK over the past 15 years. The number rolled over to voicemail and Dr. German returned my message within 3 MINUTES!! She was kind, compassionate and professional. She assured me that she would make sure I was seen Saturday at 0830 and that she would make the call and the appointment. The next morning sure enough the front desk, always friendly, welcoming and professional said that yes, they were expecting me. I sat down and in less than a minute a very gentlemanly young man escorted me into an exam room, washed his hands, checked my vision and pressure asked appropriate questions then left, stating the doctor would be in and closed the door. The next thing I knew the door FLEW OPEN hitting the wall! The Doctor half closed it with the handle. she passed me by, played with the computer then rolled over to the slit lamp and said "put your face in here". I am aware of how to put my face into a slit lamp but as I placed my chin on the ledge she SLAMMED THE SLIT LAMP INTO MY FOREHEAD AND STUCK HER BARE FINGER IN MY EYE!!. She then sat back, made a rude noise and said "You have a Stye AND YOU HAVE DANDRUFF ON YOUR EYELIDS! DON'T YOU EVER WASH YOUR FACE?!" I CALMLY REPLIED: "I have diagnosed Psoriasis over the outer third of my left eyebrow, psoriatic debris on my lashes, a spot in my left Nare and another spot over my left upper lip. I see a Dermatologist who has prescribed an ointment. I wash my face and use lid scrubs suggested by Dr. King twice daily but when under stress it acts up and the Psoriatic scaling is worse. My son is chronically I'll and has just been hospitalized again." She ignored all of this as she was writing on a post it. She then slapped the post it on my hand like an errant child. Again without eye contact she said "buy that and use it twice a day with a cotton pad. I've sent in your prescription." She did ask if I had any allergies and when I said "PCN and Tobradex eye ointment" she made another rude noise. She got up to leave and I said quietly: "I need to give you this information: When you flew in here directly from another patient you touched the door, the door handle, the computer, the slit lamp and then stuck your bare finger in my eye. You did not wash your hands." She got indignant and said "I used the alcohol dispenser on the wall". SHE DID NOT BECAUSE I WAS WATCHING. I thought that after the computer she would wash her hand at the nearby sink. She did not! I chose not to argue with her. She seemed angry for whatever reason I have no idea. So next I said: "I am not an ignorant, uneducated, dirty person lacking in knowledge of personal hygiene or sterile or clean technique. I am a Nurse Practitioner with an advanced degree which is why I reminded you about hand washing before sticking a bare finger in my eye.". She glared at me and said "We'll, goody goody for you!". She got up and walked out. I have never met such a rude and unprofessional woman who calls herself a Doctor. I have been a Critical Care Nurse for 44 years and come from a family of Doctors, Nurses and Attorneys. Over the years some have been rude but nothing like this!! I am not a stupid person and NO ONE DESERVES TO BE TREATED THAT WAY!! Dr. Hawkins was the name on her Jacket. She never bothered to introduce herself and I hope to NEVER see her again. Do not make an appointment with her unless you like being insulted and treated like a lesser being. She is an embarrassment to this Eye Clinic Where I have seen a few of the doctors over the years. Received a letter from my doctor telling me to make an appointment. Called the clinic to make one and they asked for an insurance card number, I told them my card is somewhere but I will produce one when I come to the clinic. Incredible, I was told they would not make an appointment without insurance information. I have been going to Geneva Eye Clinic inside of 50 years, and they have always been paid. Suppose I was without insurance? Would they refuse treatment? I hope my doctor (German) see this review. While the doctors are great, something is wrong when I was denied an appointment simply because I did not have my insurance information available at the time. On July 31, 2020, my 3 year old nephew and his mother went to this office for a glasses fit. My nephew is autistic and was recenlty diagnosed with a condition that severely compromises his depth perception. Unfortunately, he cannot wear a mask as he finds it extremely uncomfortable and frightening. I am told that his mother informed the office of this ahead of time and no objection was raised. When they arrived, he was refused service and no accommodations were made because he could not wear a mask. While I understand everyone's concern around the pandemic, the office could have made some simple accommodations and took precautions to allow him to get these life changing glasses. What was more shocking was the manner in which the service was refused, the office staff were extremely rude, specifically a person named Shelley. Please steer clear of this office, poor customer service and lack of empathy do not deserve your money. read more

I am very surprised to hear any negative comments. I have been going to Dr. King for years and I find him and everyone in the eye clinic to be extremely professional, knowledgeable, helpful and nice. Dr. King takes the time to listen and is always willing to discuss any concerns I have. A couple months back Dr. King did my cataract and thoroughly explained everything and all my options to me prior to the surgery. During the surgery he was extremely calming, talking to me throughout the surgery to insure I was as calm and comfortable as possible. The front desk is always very helpful and willing to try to accommodate an appointment time when needed. I had to visit with Dr. Brito once when Dr. King was full and I needed to be seen fairly quick. I found Dr. Brito to be extremely professional and knowledgeable as well. In 2018, I came to this clinic for an eye infection. I had never been there before. Dr. Hawkins was rude, in a hurry and acted annoyed that I came in with something so minor. I had a large red bump on my eyelid. I had to wait a long time to be seen then the appointment was about 5 minutes. She wrote a script, walked out of the room and neglected to ask if I had any questions, which I did. I didn't anticipate having to return. Then yesterday, I got another more serious eye infection. I called for an appointment and was promised a tech would call me back. I waited for 1 1/2 hours but no call. I called back 2 more times until they said I should talk to the manager. Before that could happen, I was cut off and had to call back. When I called back, I was scolded for not knowing that they do call backs at the end of the day. I, of course, thought I was talking to the office manager. I asked her if a tech was going to call and she said very rudely that she was a tech. She had not identified herself. She then told me that the doctor had left at noon and said the office person, who told me that I could be seen, made a mistake. I asked how a doctor leaves the building without notifying the front desk. Etc., etc. etc. Needless to day, I will never go back to this practice. Today I found a new practice, closer to my home and was seen at 8:50 am. The doctor was on time, kind, took plenty of time and asked if I had questions. This infection was serious which made me even more angry at Geneva Eye Clinic. Don't waste your time. Find somewhere else. read more

I explained that we just moved into the area and were looking for eye care for three family members. I had insurance that they said was in network. I have been going to optometrists for over 50 years. NEVER have I ever been so rudely and dismissively treated by any optometry office as I was by WENDY at Geneva Eye Clinic. She made setting up a routine check up like trying to get into the land of Oz! Who knows what kind of service this place has, never got that far--but any company that trains their receptionist to screen as rudely as "WENDY" is probably not the kind of company you want to waste time calling, as I did. read more

Where do I even begin? This was by far the worst experience I have had at an eye appointment. I am at a high risk for glaucoma and need to have a medical eye exam frequently, but our insurance changed and so did all of my doctors. This was the clinic that was recommended to me by primary. The two people who were helpful were the receptionist at the front desk and the optician who had to hunt down the prescription that the tech failed to pass along to her. The doctor had no interest in requesting the 6 years of records that my previous doctor had. My guess is that it was because I was seeing an Optometrist and not an Ophthalmologist. My guess is that it was pride that blocked the doctor from accepting that maybe the Optometrist had something of value to look at. She was just seeing my eyes in a single point in time. For a case of glaucoma, I would guess that seeing a timeline would be much more helpful. I don't know if the tech had the ability to smile. She led me from room to room, and administrated all of my screening. During the field of vision test, I felt her MOVING my chin rest around, then asking me to keep my head still!!! She did the refraction, was one of the quickest refractions I ever had, and told me I no longer have an astigmatism. When she put the prescription into the machine, I could tell that my right eye still wasn't right. Then, as I mentioned before, she didn't give my prescription to the optician. I wish my story ended when I left the building, but apparently their billing department is less than competent as well. I had gotten a call from work saying that my insurance had been declined because the group name was updated and I should have new cards. I called BCBS/IL and thankfully they sorted it out with them. The rep at the insurance informed me that I am using the right card, that the issue is on their end and not mine and that this was NOT my responsibility. GEC called back and it went to my voicemail this time, but not once did they apologize for their mistake. I went and got a second opinion on my prescription, and sure enough, I still have an astigmatism. I also got a different referral for the next time I get my glaucoma checked. Never going back. I wouldn't let them check out my dog's eyes. read more

WORST MEDICAL VISIT I HAVE EVER HAD. I have lived in the ri-city area my entire life and never been treated like this. BE AWARE! they will charge you for fees they never dicussed with you, and then when you bring it to their attention they tell you "i dont know what to tell you, you need to pay for it" Old staff, and EXTREMELY OLD EQUIPMENT. I was treated very poorly by the staff. I had and eye exam (billed incorrectly), and purchased relatively expensive glasses. Long wait to get back in to pick them up. I left the office feeling like the fit was not good, but was told just to try them and come back if they need adjusting. I said at the time that it was always a long wait to get back in, but left anyway not feeling great about it. Sure enough they need adjustment and I can't get in for 4 more days. Staff is completely unsympathetic and inflexible, even at the manager level. This would be a 10 minute appointment for an adjustment. Very sorry I returned to Geneva Eye Clinic. read more

First time we were here and the service at the front counter was very rude. Had us seeing the wrong doctor and then she was upset that my 18 year old forgot her glasses. The lady that did the initial checkup was very rude and basically wasn't interested in determining if my daughter need a different prescription for contacts, just want the old prescription so they could renew it. Keep telling us that if we wanted a different prescription we would have to make another appointment (and pay another fee) to see someone else. Had us talk to the contact lady and she was very nice and the only bright spot here. Dr Hawkins was nice but we only spent 3 minutes with her. Checkout was a nightmare. Someone walked by and grabbed our paperwork and wrote something on it. When my daughter asked what it meant the clerk responded, "don't worry about it, we know what we are doing". My daughter left crying!!!!!! They misbilled the insurance and we never did get a prescription!!! What a JOKE!!!! All they were interested in was collecting money and how fast they could get us out of there. NEVER BEEN TREATED LIKE THIS IN MY LIFE!!!! Find another ophthalmologist who is more efficient and respectful... Wait time to see Dr. Brito was about 2 hours. She spent only 10 minutes evaluating my child and she charged us for a comprehensive initial evaluation. She appeared annoyed when I asked any questions, which didn't happen when my child saw another pediatric ophthalmologist in the Chicagoland area. She lacks empathy and has no respect or patience with parents who bring up questions or concerns. read more

I commend them for being so kind, apologetic, and telling me "changes have been made." From what I was told, Dr. King was none too happy when he was personally informed that a long-time client was basically turned away at the door on the date of their appointment - willing to pay cash. My advice to anybody reading my first review below and who may fit this category - call them again and see if your insurance is now accepted or another arrangement can be made, as they told me "changes have been made since the new year". Also, I now believe you MAY be able to pay out of pocket if you choose. Just call to double check with them. Please see my review now for my latest appointment: August 4th appointment (updated review): VERY pleased with the appointment, punctuality in which I was taken (I was barely in the waiting room 5 minutes before being called), the technician who helped me (I believe her name was Amber - friendly, professional, very thorough, cute, cute glasses), and Dr. King who again was very thorough and very nice. Turns out my eye irritation was possibly allergy related (either on it's own, or POSSIBLY indirectly related to a possible condition I may have such as fibromyalgia or something auto-immune, and I was prescribed special eye drops for the next few months. I say "possible" because that diagnosis hasn't YET been made by my other doctors as far as conclusively. But, I at least have more information on how to comfort the eye discomfort I have been having for 6+ months thanks to my visit with Dr. King. I was very pleased with my visit and all the staff (I have been coming here pretty regularly since I have been a teenager) and will continue to come here for my eye-related needs. Again as stated above, if you had previous problems (the past year) with insurance providers or payment issues, please at least give them a second call to see if things may have changed or other arrangements can possibly be made. read more

Had the worst experience. Waited over an hour to be seen after filing out likes of paperwork and finally tracked down a staff member to ask when I'd be seen and they said maybe another 40 minutes and then my exam would be an hour and a half. Are you kidding?????? I have two small children and I had made arrangements for them to be watched during my appointment but I did not plan for a 2 hour wait before an hour and a half long exam! They would not give me my prescription for which I took my exam more than 4 months ago, instead says that I have to wait for it to be sent in the mail. Since I work out of state this is a big inconvenience and they wanted a minimum of 24 hours before they would even take a look at it. My wife and I both go to dr Becker never had a problem. Doctors do get busy and emergencies happen. If the staff isn't keeping you informed that's on them and the Doctor should be told. If there is a customer service problem then the Doctors need to address it, as this seems to be a theme in all the complaints. read more

Came here for a cataract and they fixed it without a hitch. The surgeon was excellent with technique and the process was pain free. On the other hand, the lack of customer service (and direct eye contact) leaves me never wanting to return. The only personable person was the lady who helped me make the surgery schedule. Customer service is not what they excel at here, however, they do know what their doing when it comes to eye surgery. Five stars for skill and 1 star for friendliness. read more

I have been a long time patient at this Clinic and a Patient of Dr. Hawkins. She is by far the best Dr I have ever seen for ophthalmology. She is so smart and wants to genuinely help her patients. The staff is amazing and very helpful. You can tell they are well trained and care about the people that walk into the clinic. When I called and made my appointment for my eyes exam I spoke with a Lady named Shelley. She was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. When I got to the clinic for my appointment Shelley was working and I was so pleased to meet her. If you ever need help she is the one to go to! I could see her smile even under the mask!!! She made me feel welcome!! Then I got to work with Marcia and Heather. I had a lot of questions and both of these lady's were more than informative! This is my first review that I have written because I have never been treated so rudely and with disrespect in my life! Geneva Eye Clinic is being run by unethical inadequate administration. I chose not to have my eyes dilated the day of my appointment. I have been wearing contacts since I was a teenager have always declined having my eyes dilated and optometrists from an outside clinic have always respectfully accepted my decline in dilation. I chose not to have my eyes dilated the day of my appointment, and was told I was non compliant and being difficult therefore I was not able to get my contacts. I'm not surprised to read all the negative reviews! I should have read them before I made the appointment therefore I would not have wasted my time. Please read the reviews and believe that the negative comments are in fact true! Experienced it personally! Positive comments are probably written by the owner. Staff and owner who is the doctor there are very rude and disrespectful. They didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with their customer service which was very disturbing to me. Tried to make a complaint about the poor service but the owner didn't want to take the time to speak to me and instructed someone to tell me to take my business elsewhere and did not care to resolve the problem. I'm guessing that changes have been made since the earlier reviews with concerns about billing, customer service, etc. I have found the billing department to be helpful,and staff at the front desk is always friendly and helpful. I see Dr. Becker as he specializes in inflammatory eye disease. If you have this kind of problem and live in the western suburbs, it's fortunate that he practices in this area as there are not many of these specialists in the Chicago area. I've never had a wait beyond 5 or 10 minutes when I arrive on time for appointments. It seems to me that they run a tight ship in that regard. The opthamology technicians usually perform tests before you see the physician. Their visits are short so have your questions ready--Dr. Becker explains things you don't understand. This practice seems solid to me and at this point I would look past the old negative reviews and form your own opinion about the practice as it currently operates. read more
