You may have some sticker shock if you, like me, frequent Great Clips. This place may be pricey, but it's worth the cost. My stylist was Aaron, who was very professional and thorough. You could tell that he has a passion for his work and that he wouldn't be okay with a sub-par haircut. He consulted me throughout the cut to make sure I liked what he was doing, and if I wanted anything different. My husband had Rich, and although I didn't get to observe, he says that he had a similar experience with his stylist. The environment is kinda on the loud side, so that may be one of the few downfalls. Parking is also a nightmare, so be prepared to either circle the block 20 times to find a spot that opens, or take an alternative means of transportation to get there. I came in with a nice long flow going and explained how I wanted to keep the middle part and just debulk it. He messed me up and gave me a Lego hairpiece side part. Do not book with Sean. I had an appointment at opening (10 am). By the time I get there, I get notified I'm 10 minutes late so I'll have to reschedule due to a cleaning process that will take hours to finish. That's fine, since I never been to this area (I was looking for parking) and safety first. But think about this: 10 minutes in and they just opened, but I get denied over the tiny inconvenience. So does sanitary cleaning happen after the first client or before? What about cleaning the night before to prepare for tomorrow's customers? Are the tools used not cleaned after an imaginary customer during open? So many questions and concerns. Before I was given the option to reschedule, I mentioned the cut was for my teen brother and then the attitude changed in the atmosphere. Also, there was only 1 other customer (who wasn't my barber's customer). Oh, and I been 10 minutes late to an appointment before, at a different Gents Cut location (Bloomington) and still made it in despite the full house (and that time wasn't due to trying to find parking). Yeah I'm annoyed. Something just doesn't add up here. Save time, money, questions and pass. Update: My rescheduled appointment got cancelled before any notification by some mystical force that works at that location it seems. I don't want to make it seem like a prejudice act, but it doesn't help that I'm asian and got treated like a wandering customer who does walk in's when I only set appointments as required during this pandemic, wear face mask, use gloves and sanitizer like a normal American citizen. read more

Oof, first time client at this particular Gent Cuts, as I usually go to the one in Edina. Wanted to check this one out as it is closer to home. I had Sean who took a look at the photos for all of 10 seconds before he proceeded to chop off all of my hair. We had confirmed a length that I wanted to keep on top, but he later disregarded that. Giving it two stars because the fade is fine. Also he didn't ask a single question the entire time he was getting rid of all my hair? I guess I'll continue to drive the extra 10 minutes to the Edina location to see a stylist who pays attention to what I want. I'll have to wait another 6 months to grow enough hair though. I definitely don't recommend coming to this location or seeing Sean if you have a particular cut in mind. read more

Girl at counter tried her best to refer another place for a quick beard trim but like most younger folks had no idea how to explain or communicate in any meaningful way Other woman was sitting in barber chair with no customer. I'm glad they have expanded since I started going there, but I feel like the Gent's experience that they tout has declined as the business expanded. This place is amazing!! I drive up from Madison, WI every time I need a haircut. I've been to every place in Madison and they all are very different and hit or miss with their cuts. This place does it the right way every time no matter who I have cut my hair. They are very friendly which is kinda hard to find in this industry of work. It's by appointment but they always have time to squeeze me in when I'm running up to Minneapolis for a quick visit for business or hanging out with friends. This was my first visit to Gent's. I've actually never been to a barber shop, so I really didn't know what to expect. I'll provide my review from start to finish. When I came in I was welcomed by a nice receptionist, welcoming and friendly. Told her I was meeting Sean and she already knew who I was. She took my jacket and offered me a beverage and a seat while Sean finished up. Great experience so far. The place itself, as some reviews have said is a bit dated. You can tell it's been there for a minute, or just poorly built. However it didn't take anything away from the experience. Sean was great, I really love my haircut and he asked what I wanted and he was able to put his spin on it and it is awesome. The towel was very nice and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if people fell asleep. It is very unrushed and it feels like you can take your time and enjoy pampering yourself. Sean recommended some product and I'll be honest, I NEVER buy product from a salon but I just had to here. It looks great. Overall, great experience, barber was great. Listen, you are in grand Ave, you are going to spend a bit more. But I honestly think it was worth it and will be back. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Gents for about 4 years. Originally, I was looking for a more professional experience than your average Great Clips or Fantastic Sam's. Since my first visit I have been hooked. The St Paul location is my favorite, mainly due to it's convenient location. Booking online is simple. I would definitely recommend planning ahead for your cut and grooming needs. As others have reviewed, it is a challenge to simply walk in for their more specialized services, like a shave. I have had my hair cut by many different barbers. My go to is Andy. (He's very kind, professional and you can tell he enjoys his work) Personally, it makes a world of a difference to have someone who knows what works best for your hairstyle and that you can look forward to seeing again. However, I've never had a bad experience with the other staff. Today, I had my hair cut by Sean. Which inspired my to write a review. I appreciate his attention detail and his friendly personality. My hair cut was on point! My appointment was very relaxing and it the flat out made my day. Since my last time to GENT barbershop on Grand in St. Paul, they have added an Executive Shave in addition to their Classic straight razor shave adding a clay mask among other things to the classic. I've sent many friends for cuts as well as everyone has gone back - so a trust testament to their service and quality. Seems like a nice place with nice people but it's not right how they treated me today. When I called to book an appointment I specifically told the receptionist that it was for my 1yr. old son. She recommended a kids place but when I told her they weren't answering the phone she said that's totally fine and that they could definitely take him. We got to the appointment 15 min early and waited for our stylist. Another 15min after our booked appt she finally came up to me and told me she couldn't take my son because of his age. For my boys, I thought it would be nice to have them have a straight shave, as this is an appropriate occasion and an under-appreciated ritual. I had gone to Gent for my hair on occasion, and they had me sold on this idea. They only have one man to give shaves (shaver? razorer?), and he is a journeyman of the Twin Cities. I think his name is Mustache Jim, but that really is just trivia at this point. It really was a good shave. And it seemed like the boys liked it too. My only thought was that he actually took LESS time than we had arranged, but it's his operation! Gent itself is pleasant, hip, if a little small and lacking a bathroom. Gambling with your hair. It can go really, really poorly. Jared gave my son a great cut. Jared was great. My daughter, who has short hair, got the worst cut I've ever seen. The sweet but unqualified stylist (Kim) looked at it sadly and said she'd comp it. The worst was her colleague, Ellie, who was more experienced but wouldn't help out. The cut took about 55 minutes, which is a bad sign for a short cut. I'm sorry for the good stylists who work there that their colleagues are so unqualified. But, if that's the case, maybe take a few minutes of your down-time to help out. Here you are with a 1-star review for the entire salon, as my daughter starts her first day of middle school next week from an unqualified stylist that just kept cutting and cutting and cutting and a colleague -- Ellie -- who wouldn't help. I have been traveling a great deal and as such, I'm all too familiar with the difficulties of finding a good barber in a new city. I have thick graying hair and I need to keep it short to keep it tame. Finding a barber who manages to cut it short and make it look classy as opposed to a military-style buzz cut is difficult. Justin nailed it. Better than my regular barber back home. Beyond that, the store is inviting and classy (a bit of a high-end man-cave), the staff are polite and attentive and parking is easy. Stepped in to gents and the store was lacking merchandise. They have very few items for sale on their shelves. I am not rating the barbers or stylists that are in gents i am just rating the overall store. The place was very clean. it is kinda small inside and it looked kinda like a salon for women. This will be a good place if you are a guy with long hair that needs to make it pretty. There are soo many shaving products out there and they seemed to only have 2 brands. Do NOT come here for a buzzcut. I asked for a simple #2 buzzcut. After my "barber" told me he didn't have a #2 (first warning sign) he went around the shop looking for the #2 attachment. What followed was a horrifying display of the employees trying to decide what a number 2 was, and googling to decide if their 2/8" attachment was in fact a "number two." I should have taken the hint and walked out then, but I stayed. The haircut that followed was clearly not the barber's specialty, or even something that he ever does. I had to point out some obviously missed spots (he was about to send me off with hair on the left side of my head that was twice as long as the right) and the end result still had way too many stray long hairs to be considered a good buzzcut. Not quite "1 star" bad, since they were nice and no complete divots were taken out of my head, but they still botched it about as much as possible with the world's easiest haircut. They must be better at the traditional scissors haircuts. From my experience though, for $15+tip I could have bought some trimmers and done a better job myself. read more

I was really excited to make my husband get his hair cut here..he usually goes last minute and his hair never looks right. Went to Gents website and was pleasantly surprised you can make appointments on their website! So handy! There are bios on all the stylists which is pretty cool ...mustache Joe has the best picture by far! So made his appointment and made our way over there. Arrived and were promptly greeted and given a choice of water or come products..nice! Usually the salons I go to offer beverages but never the "barbershops". His barber came and got him right on time and took him back. He enjoyed the hot towel on his face and loved the hair cut also. The only downside? He was nicked with the electric shaver..not once...not twice...but several times. I am talking about scratches all over his neck. I am posting a picture to show that I am not exaggerating. It looks like someone with tiny razor sharp claws got ahold of him. I think maybe next time we will try a different barber? I am a Minnesota native and traveled home for the holidays and one of my best friends told me he started coming here and that I HAD to check this place out. I booked an appointment with Aaron (which was strategic as I opted for the one who had the least openings, insinuating he was a good choice, by far he was). I have an interesting hair texture as I am mixed with black and white so its straighter but more coarse hair. He did a phenomenal fade, used some of the best hair product I've used yet (Suaveacito) and was just overall a fun, hipster-ish guy to talk to. I love that I could get my hair washed without having to be dragged across the room. The hot towel during the wash was also a great touch.
