Really disappointed to be writing this review, but I have to be honest about my experience today. My stylist (who I will not name out of respect for their livelihood) totally missed the mark on the look I was trying to achieve (in spite of me bringing pictures). Besides not delivering on style, the technical aspects of the work were also extremely unpolished. I was literally in shock when the stylist turned me around at the end of the cut. The "fade" I was given exists in 3 very visible and unblended sections of clipper work. When I asked for some more attention to be given to the clipper work on the sides the cut improved marginally, but was still horribly unblended. I ultimately lost faith in the stylist's technical abilities and decided to cut my losses with this haircut. We never even touched the top of my head (which was my request). I mention that only to say that when paying $48 and spending 30 minutes just to have the sides of my head trimmed, I expect the work to be damn near flawless. I was very surprised that such an "upscale" barbershop would fail on the absolute basics of a men's haircut. That being said the staff and stylist were both friendly, and I do believe they were well intentioned. read more

Nice barbershop, and excellent haircut! Stopped in for the first time today. They don't have the pool table any longer, and didn't offer a drink like other reviewers have stated. Also wasn't offered a shampoo or warm towel that they advertise on their website. They do have coffee and water, but the front desk guy didn't offer until I asked. Also their website states that haircuts are $30, and I was charged $40 plus and automatic $8 tip (20%) and asked if that was ok after it was on the receipt. All that said, this is the best haircut of my life. Excellent attention to what I asked for, and Matt took his time to make sure I had an outstanding haircut. 5 Stars for the haircut, 3 for the experience. read more

I've been visiting the same Vietnamese salon for my hair needs since Nike Pumps came out in the late 1980s. But when I stepped in today in need for a cut, and found that the wait would be about an hour, I decided to entertain other options. Enter Winston's Barbershop. After reading Michael A's review in my parked car trying to figure out what the hell to do, I decided to make a visit to this eleven year institution on West Lake. Upon entering, you're greeted by a friendly receptionist who offers water, juice, beer, or a mixed drink. (That alone is crazy to me. Drinks at a barbershop?) While I sipped on my water (because I usually don't drink whiskey in the afternoon), I knocked around some balls on the pool table while listening to the cacophony of sports chatter from the TVs that hung above. That's when I learned that the Minnesota Vikings got an awesome new head coach in Mike Zimmer. SKOL! But I digress... Kyle is an friendly, skilled, and thoughtful barber hailing from the neighboring snowy lands of La Crosse who has now set roots in Uptown. He asked me what I wanted, and I asked for something new instead of my typical request of "short on the side, long on the top." I have a new hair-stylist/ barber, so why not a new cut? He suggested one that became popular due to shows like Mad Men and other shows taking place in the 1960s. Great! I received an awesome trim, followed by a steaming and soothing hot towel on my face (apparently to open up my pores) while having my hair shampooed and conditioned. He finished by shining and slicking my hair with some pomade, which made me look like a Vietnamese hip-hop mobster. People can justify paying a hefty amount for a delectable rib-eye, impressive suit for an interview, or a comfortable and stylish pair of tennis shoes. So why not invest in your hair? Winston's is a barbershop that offers premium service at a premium price. So glad I came! Can't wait to return next month! read more

Rogue Hair for Men is the former Winston's, so has the same anesthetic with none of the hangover. Come in a little early to relax in a comfy chair and have some coffee, tea or a beer. The music and general anesthetic is chill and relaxing. But that's not what I come here for. Drue, the manager, is also a fantastic stylist and I completely entrust my hair to her experienced hands. Rogue Hair is also up with the times, and had reminder texts and emails for your appointments if you want. There's also the option to buy package deals for haircuts that costs more up front but nets you a free haircut in the long run. A good selection of product is also on display and available. Highly recommended for any male styling need. read more

Best barbershop I've ever been to, and will be my only barbershop for as long as I live in Minneapolis. I relocated to Minneapolis in 2008 and struggled to find a barber that could follow-through on my direction and deliver the same cut consistently. But Winston's solved that problem and now I don't have to worry about getting my hair cut the way I want, when I want. Drue is as funny and interesting as she is talented with clippers. I literally have about 217 hairs on my head (I was bored one night and counted...maybe) So going anywhere other than a $14 barber chair often seems overkill. But a lot of these stylin' barber lounges are popping up and I have to admit, I am intrigued. Whether it's the scalp massage, pool tables, customizable music playlist, or actual bar they offer, it tends to sweep me in and coax me to pay about double for my 'buzz cut with a #1' This place has the pool table and the 'products' - and not sure it's worth the coax, but I got a decent quick cut and left mostly happy. One of the only places in town that can cut my hair...at least my "stylist" who I've gone to for 5+ years now. Unfortunately, my hair grows really really fast and is difficult to cult. So I need a cut every two weeks which bites, but I'm happy to have hair so I'm not complaining. I buy the 6 pack, which gives you 1 haircut free, and you pay for 5. Winston's isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. They offer coffee, water, and shampooing but I really just want the cut, and don't need the pampering. Although, I did get an extraction for the this blackhead on my face (TMI)....but it was totally reasonably priced. Also, got a brow waxing for the first time, which wasn't surprisingly expensive. I would definitely recommend getting a "facial" (I really didn't want to use that word, but don't know what else to call it?) if you need some zit popping. The beautician is fantastic. Since moving back to Minneapolis from San Diego I have been searching for a good barber. I finally found the Barbershop and Barber- Winston's and Matt. I have been to him 4 times now- and each cut has spot on. He is also a funny guy and easy to chat with about anything from the Vikings to Midget Bowling. If you know the meaning if seeing three Albino's in a day and one rare as f*#k albino midget then please let him know. I got a chance to try them recently for a July special on half-price massages. How can you go wrong with that? Many different ways as I found out. I checked in and waited on a barstool right next to the receptionist. Unlike other spas, no one offered me a drink so I asked for a glass of water. About 4-5 customers who checked in while I waited were ALL offered a pop or beer or water. When I checked with my husband, who preceded me for a massage, he was not offered a drink either. At my appointed time, the therapist came to meet me and gave me a form to complete. There was a question about type of music preference which led me to believe my preference would be played - wrong. The massage room was loud with a fan in the room since their a/c was being repaired. The music level in the room was too loud. The therapist will develop into an excellent masseuse once she blends her discrete strokes into one flowing movement. She had some fantastic moves. A big minus for me was the absence of a tranquil waiting area appropriate for people looking to relax and wind down at a spa. read more

Attention to detail in a comfortable setting! After searching for a hair stylist who doesn't immediately get out the electric clippers to give me hair cut, I found Winston's! I've been going to Eric for five plus years and can't imagine going anywhere else. His attention to detail and skill in cutting hair always produces compliments from friends and family after every cut. It's a friendly atmosphere. And I love that they don't push products you. So I have a new work situation coming up and my hair has a different idea. Turns out, as it might be growing and curling in the amazing and perfect "hockey hair" formation, it might not make sense in the business world. I have long, amazing, perfectly curly (hockey) hair, I also have a receding hairline.... My stylist not only offered me a beer when I arrived, he also told me, "if we go a little shorter, your hair will look so much stronger." After an uncountable number of bad haircuts up in Maple Grove, I went to Winston's (Macy's downtown) out of sheer desperation. I am now satisfied with every experience there and I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. I typically go to Summer or Cristof and they are both fantastic (I believe they cut in Uptown, as well). The prices are probably too high, but having confidence that you don't look like a window-licker with your new haircut is priceless. She really takes the time in the beginning of the appointment to get to know you and what might suit you best, I've never once been disappointed and have left the chair with a few different types of cuts. James Irving is on the pricier side, appointments are about 40 minutes, but the staff is friendly, the space is classy, and they always offer you a beer when you check in. I live in a neighborhood where we have more barbershops and salons than bus stops. I still drive twenty minutes from home to get my hair cut here. Through all the name changes, they always make me look better than anyone else ever has. Tiffany takes care of my hair (no easy task, since I always wait too long and don't take very good care of it), and keeps me entertained with banter. Winston's is unpretentious and laid back, and I love brushing up on my pool game while I wait for the chair to open up. I'd dock a star because they're so far away from me, but even if they opened another location I'd still come back here. It's just such a lovely cozy space, and after I get my hair cut I can duck into Barbette next door and show off my new 'do over a glass of wine and a croque monsieur. read more

Winston's is the latest barber shop at this Lake street location (fka Schmidy's and Tommy's). The look and services of the shop are very similar to previous versions, but the staff and clientele are a bit more down to earth. In the past, I sometimes felt like I was walking into the "hooters" of barbershops; which is great in some regards, but in regards to getting my haircut, not what I am about or should be about. I have been going to Winston's for years through all the name changes and owners. I feel they finally have a solid owner and will continue to stabilize more every day. Though it all I have had my hair cut by Kyle who has been one of only a few stylists that has survived it all. Great atmosphere with down to earth staff, and you can now get a beer while you wait for your cut. Price gouging... I've been here a few times now. Always had decent (though not exactly spectacular) cuts. My issue is they can't seem to stick to their advertised prices. It says $30 for a men's haircut...great. Come up to pay after the cut, and suddenly it's $35 one time, or $40 the most recent time! They didn't ask my permission if they were assigning me some kind of special stylist that charges 1/3 more. This is just tacky and unprofessional. This past time was also after having waited nearly a half-hour to get in. I thought I would like this place and possibly make it my regular, but after experiencing this twice now, I will have to find a more reasonable, more honest place to get my hair cut! read more

Where can I get a good haircut? I can hear that question echoing through all of yelpville since there is nothing more highly personal and subjective for a guy than this every 4-6-8 week ( you pick) ritual. Before moving to Minneapolis I lived a number of years in Sottsdale AZ...home of the credit card millionaire. And it took me years and settled on one place that would do a fairly decent job of not screwing up and average charge plus tip was $65.00 or so....now I'm not suggesting you should leave your 20 dollar great clips stylist but I never had much luck with the "value" cut salon....so upon moving here I walked to what appeared to be a reputable one off salon (it shall remain nameless) and got the worst cut...ever.... And at about the same price as AZ...so bad was the cut my girlfriend who hadNot yet moved to MPLS could tell just how bad it was...just from my voice! So as soon as I had enough growth I did some research and heard that Winstons uptown location did a good job and was reasonably priced. The vibe is first comfortable - den like "manly" and complete with pool table.. The desk staff- always super friendly then offers you a cold beverage of choice ( yes...including a brew)... Sit in oversized chair check out the TV or a magazine... So the pre-cut experience? A plus! I can't speak for every barber/stylist there other than it is always busy . However, my barber "Matt" is simply awesome....fast-knowledgable-listens-and the best part? Talks.... Nothing better than our regular music- sports-house renovation- traveling of the month discussions...the cut is always great and the price ? Significantly less than my Scottsdale and first MPLS experience... So-quality-customer service- price vs value? All top marks... The uptown Winston's is awesome. read more

Great 2nd experience. The receptionist was very friendly (seemed to love her job) and my hairdresser (Melissa) was skilled and talkative (nothing worse than awkward silence for 30 minutes). Many people have cut my hair incorrectly (per my suggestions) in the past but not at Winston's. She listened carefully to details and wasn't afraid to ask question/give suggestion. My only complaint is that I had to wait 15 minutes even after setting up an appointment. read more
