This will be a long review; my brother's journey to his new home was also long! I'm including all this information because I was pretty much on my last nerve when our Hospice of the Valley social worker found us Johnathan Grosvenor at GHLS. I'm supposed to know what I'm doing with these things; after all, I've been a volunteer for Arizona agencies serving the elders in the community since 1986, culminating in an appointment to the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging in 2011. Only we'd relocated to the Phoenix area in 2017, I'd retired from GACA, and all of my previous contacts were in Yuma, 200 miles away. Here, I knew nobody. My brother is a Vietnam-era vet, so I relied on the help and information I could get from the VA. The first company they referred me to hounded me for days, phoning and texting every 30 minutes or so from practically every place in the country except Arizona. The second told me there was no way my brother had enough income for any assisted living facility except some really sleazy possibilities I knew he would hate. They also referred me to somebody who would "help fill out paperwork," for a fee of $600. Then, HOV stepped in and we got that paperwork done, at no cost to us, so then the search began in earnest. We had enough income so we could actually go and look at some assisted living facilities. I spent many hours sifting thru websites and phoning a lot of disinterested people who didn't care to answer my questions. At least we had some idea what my brother's preferences were, so it wasn't a wasted effort. It did take some months for the VA to come thru with the extra income needed, but by then we were happy for any progress at all! Then the day came when we were able, after visits to two home-style locations, which my brother preferred over the massive multi-story buildings also available, to simply pick one and say, "Yes, this is it!" I was absolutely impressed by Johnathan, despite the fact that he was a last-minute replacement for a colleague who had an unexpected emergency. He knows his business and was especially helpful, at least because I'm pretty sure by then my brother was getting a little tired of all these women ordering him around. I was so confused and freaked out I couldn't even think what questions to ask. Johnathan bailed me out repeatedly, with much grace and calm, I might add, and asked those questions which were vital in helping us choose. Yes, I can whole-heartedly recommend Gentle Hearts Living Solutions. My brother has been in his new home almost a month now, and we are still as comfortable with our choice as we were on our first day. read more
