Lol Its not a "black barber shop" I would say Hispanic rock/biker hood barber shop. If that makes any sense. Either way we stayed and waited for Johnny. Just picked him based on what we saw while waiting. No saying he is the best they all look like they are great! He was attentive and very detailed orientated. The gentleman who cut my hair who I assumed to be the owner was very rough with my head and it was even painful at times as he was cutting. He wasn't really focused on me as he was talking with the other employees and watching tv. I felt like there was not a lot of care for the customer. At the end the haircut was decent, but not exactly what I wanted. He asked me if I wanted gel and I told him what I usually use, but it seemed like he only had one option. The barbers are either blind of love to screw me over, The first i went was dope, the second time i went i got my haircut by the OWNER (Bald guy, that was my first mistake ) showed him a pic of ME with a MID bald fade to a 4, He says "Do you want it like that or better?" I tell him "Exactly like the picture" He completely Butchers my head, gives me a high bald fade to a 1 and leaves me the ugliest scab as a "Hard Part". I go back a couple months later since I'm pleased with Joanns work, but I decided to give another guy a chance. INSTANT REGRET. Gentlemen's Barber Shop, was awesome! Most chairs were full, with a waiting list, which I don't necessarily mind because I helps me see what skills the shops barbers have. I have to say, each barber that was there during my visit had plenty of skills. My barber was Joe, Joe is laid-back, but I can see that he takes his art seriously, everything I asked him to do to my hair and beard, he did with precision. I told Joanne my Yelp review would make or break her.. Lucky for her, it's a go, haha. Out of towner, stressing about going to a stranger barber, but my barber back home couldn't squeeze me in, so here goes nothing! It wasn't my favorite cut, but it was a great cut and beard trim/line up! It takes a while for your barber to get to know what you like, so I don't put this on Joanne. She did an awesome job! She was super friendly and I could tell she wanted to do her best. She told me she was new there, but she has 8 years of experience. She continually checked in and I felt taken care of in that chair. Some of the best fades in town. I started coming here after moving to SA from Cleveland. Will not go anywhere else. To tell you a little about the owner, Joe, I was getting my hair cut one day and Joe walked in. He noticed a kid sitting there waiting with his friend who came in to get a cut. The kid had a horrible fade that he got at another shop. Joe put him in a chair and fixed his jacked up fade, at no charge, and simply told the kid he knows where to come get his hair cut from now on. I love business owners like this. You will likely have to wait a little while, but the wait is well worth it! read more

PARENTS BEWARE! If the owner Joe is not there the hairdressers take the liberty to expose children (mine are 10 and 12) to adult content videos. Who would think???That going to haircut would allow you to see such a thing. When they say "Gentlemen's Barber Shop" they mean it!!!! I saw pictures of kids when I was doing my research, so I had my babysitter take my boys. Even my babysitter was taken back. The haircuts were great, its unfortunate to finally find a place that does great work, but not able to come back due to the female hairdresser indulgent video taste. How very sad. I came to San Antonio from NYC and i needed to find a barber shop that had skilled barbers who could fade and use a straight razor. I came in around 6pm with a friend and Joe (The Owner) decided to give us both cuts even though the Spurs game was on and it was past shop hours. I had one of the best fades ever, completely unrushed, and the whole 9 yards. I came back 2 weeks later and got cut by Daniel and he was extremely talented as well. These guys have enough seats for guests and they are very hospitable. First time i ever paid $16 for a cut but it was worth it every time. I have been here 4 times since. read more

My three year old was looking like a cotton swab and needed a haircut bad. I normally take the easy way and go to the nearest fantastic SAMs, great clips etc...they always mess up his hair. I'll never set foot into another place besides this new gem I found yesterday. Magaly (Maggy) was super nice and extremely professional. She sat my son down, chatted with both of us and got a clear picture of what I wanted. She also suggested certain things for my sons benefit that I would of never though about since this isn't my profession. This is by far the best haircut he's ever had and because of that, I'm on my way there now to get mine done lol. The place is a bit easy to miss but it's there. The chairs were filled with customers that we're all treated like family. It really has that family vibe even as a first timer. Just ask for Maggy when you go, you won't be disappointed! Great experience, the skill level of all the barbers was very high. The manager was walking around giving feedback where it was needed and making sure the job was done right! you can tell that the barbers there took pride in their craft. The line ups were done with a flat razor which included a hot towel (not for the boys) Both of my boys were very happy! I paid $16 for the frohawk and $14 for the fade which was more than I've paid elsewhere but worth every penny. read more

I had initially bookmarked a barber shop but when I got out of work, I called and hey were all booked for that day. So I scrambled and found this place on yelp. Figured it's worth a try. Super hard to find parking as that business only has 2 or 3 allotted spots in front and a few more behind the building. Staff had a room sectioned off as they had their puppies there that was visible . It took about 40 mins on a Friday afternoon for me to get called up. I explained how I wanted my hair cut, and the barber began. He kept me facing away from the mirror. I thought was odd but, as long as the cut was good.. I didn't mind. The fade and trim took about 25-30 mins and when he gave me a hand mirror to check his work, the fade looked great (I did have a lot of hair on my forehead) and trim seemed to be fine. Once I got home and showered.. I noticed that I had a red line on my forehead by where he edged me up, the lien was a slight slice from the straight edge! Then I take a look at my hair as I'm trying to dry it.. he trimmed my bangs and back of my head.. but left the front center of my head longer! I had a dinner reservation on Saturday and it took a lot of product to get my hair to look normal. Will I go back here? I'm going with a no read more

Went here for the second time ever today. Maggie did a great job with my hair even though it was my first time sitting in her chair. Other barbers and hairdressers in the past have told me that my hair is difficult to cut and unforgiving when it comes to mistakes, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well she faded my hair. Joe, the owner and a cool dude, actually gave me a recommendation regarding my cut towards the end and stepped in himself to make that edit which I thought was super cool. The only downside of this place is that it seems like it's usually packed, so you should be prepared to wait for a good while before they get to you, but honestly, let's just say that there's a reason why they're so busy all the time. I'd much rather wait and know that they're taking their time to be detailed with every customer instead of quickly turning over half-assed cuts. I was excited to come back to this place after my first time coming here I even brought my son to get his haircut . Nope this time my hair got butchered the girl who did my hair asked me how I wanted my hair I let her know I wanted a medium fade and nothing off the top after she was done my fade ended up being a military flat top!!! I let her know I was very unhappy with my haircut and I feel I shouldn't have to pay for my haircut but she showed no sympathy or even offer any other solution!!! My appearance means a lot to me now I'm embarrassed to wear my hair! Been here twice to accompany a guy friend and we're both very happy with GBS. Basic-looking but clean location with really friendly guys who know their way around a pair of clippers (and then some). My friend has gotten something a little different each time and the barber has done a really high quality cut both times. All the guys here do great fades and will make sure you walk out looking good. Really reasonably priced too, and my friend has gotten a chair pretty much right away even though he was a walk-in both times, but they've usually got something cool on the TV if you do have to wait. Stopped in today after travelling in last minute late in the week from San Francisco. Flat out, Old School barber shop, and one of the best one's I have ever been to! Had a shave and a haircut, with the goatee trim. I came in, waiting room was packed, and it took about only 30 minutes to get through the line. Joe, the owner, took me and was just great. Joe asked all kinds of questions about my cut, my hair and what he intended to do BEFORE he cut it. A great set of hands and professional. Aside from a great cut, groom and shave, you would never believe that he gave great advise about natural hair conditioners (i.e. use a dab of baby oil on your hair for shine and condition)! Pretty much can cut any type of hair, and I saw some world-class fades going down. They cut adult's and kid's hair. I'm heading to a huge conference right after this. I'm cut and trimmed to perfection by Joe and the guys. And to top it all off? They sent me home with a plate of homemade beef enchiladas, rice, beans and pumpkin spice bread, as in Joe's words, "We can't sent an out-of-towner home without a home cooked meal." (Already eaten - delicious!) How did they know I didn't have lunch today? Epic, run to this place. Worth any wait to get in. Get here in hipsters and get your cut on. read more

Decent place to come to. I came here and waited around 30 minutes for the first available. They have quite the wait here if you want someone specific and some of the barbers have a long wait for them. The prices was around 25 for just a hair cut but the barber took her time with my hair. She was really paying attention to detail and making sure it was even. The barbers seem really down to earth and it was a real chill atmosphere to get my hair cut at. I wish it was a little bit cheaper but this is what it cost for a decent hair cut. I didn't get exactly what I wanted but she did a decent job anyway. Visited San Antonio from California staying in the Riverwalk area and needed a haircut. Found a few locations listed downtown, but decided to drive to Gentlemens because of the review. Great barbershop! I went to Joe (the owner) and he did a great job. I also noticed all the other barbers doing just as good. And they do all types, but seem to focus on fades, low cuts, etc. Every barber used a straight razor for line ups, etc. 15 min drive from Riverwalk area. They do good work but the attitudes of some of the barbers is not worth it. I understand you have to wait for a good cut however when youre left waiting because theyre joking around and talking smack to each other is ridiculous. This goes on while the owner Joe is there. Disappointed. They give really good cuts but they really got to get the customer service piece down. They can get more money for hair cuts but if they can't talk a walk in at the time they're closing, are closed on Saturdays but say they'll be open (11/1/14) and don't take appointments then it causes a customer to go somewhere else. A customer just wants to get a good haircut by a friendly barber every week or two and not wait more than 15mins for a cut or show up to find them closed when they've communicated they'd be open. At $15 to 18 per cut not including tip they lose around a $1k/yr each time they lose a customer. read more
