You know it's designer consignment and it's good designer consignment when the tags are still dangling or it looks like its never been worn. That's what you get at Gentry's. My friends and I were really impressed with the quality of the clothing, nary a hole or pill on a sweater. BTW-oodles of cashmere from Ann Taylor and Isda&Co. A huge store with a great selection of shoes, coats, sweaters and dressier dresses. Some of the clothes were from more mature brands like Coldwater Creek, etc, but there were plenty of items from Express, Free People, and even a sighting of a pair of pants from Nanette Lepore. (Why oh why didn't they fit me! Curse you shopping gods, you really don't want me to find something from Nanette Lepore on sale??) The dressing rooms are spacious and oh wait for it....the curtains actually close which I feel like a lot of consignment stores fail at. I was also really impressed with their jewelry selection. Lots of current styles. Most of the chunky necklaces were around $21 dollars which is $10-$12 off department store prices. read more

If I knew as a customer what I know as a consignor, I would stay FAR CLEAR from this shop! We, as consignors, bring them their inventory. We receive 40% of the selling price which is determined by them, and periodically marked down. Same as all other consigment shops - you bet! HOWEVER, Gentrys only gives a onceover to the clothes you bring them, then decides later if they want them or not. If not, they "donate" them without any notice. They give you no choice to keep them or not if they don't want them! For example, I may bring them a sweater I may make some $ from if they accept it, but if they don't want it, my sister does. They don't allow me the choice of what I want to do with my own property! They main intake woman there who decides what to accept or not also repeatedly dresses like shes never seen the inside of a mall in years. This is the person making the fashion choices. She tells me an item isn't style whereas I know it is because I work for one of the fashion giants on the East Coast and I see what is new and fresh every week. If you read the fine print on Gentrys contract, they state, "shoppers pay a small handling fee on every item". This boils down to the store taking $2.00 - $5.00 OFF THE TOP OF THE SELLING PRICE of MY item for themselves. ????? They also state a steaming fee for 50 cents an item may be deducted from your account, and they make damn sure they DO deduct it, even if the items you dropped off were hats, shoes and purses! The killer is, once your 8 week consignment period is over and you want to pick up your unsold items, they charge you a dollar an item to get your property back!!!!! I have been working with many consignment shops for years, and showed this contract to a reputable owner of a similar store. She stated "This is what gives consigment shops a bad name. We all have the same software to implement these charges, but noone ever does, it's unethical. I'm embarrassed for them". As an end point to this review, I mentioned I have been working with consignment shops for years. I bring my high-end stuff one place, my so-so stuff to two others, and the junk to Gentrys, 90% of which they accept. Love the Gentry for a variety of reasons. Always find something - even if I am not looking for something. The owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. The owner Pat - is very knowledgeable of designers, style and fabrics and when she has the time can help you pull together an outfit that you never would of thought of. They have several top brand labels at the store. I am also a consignor at the store and have had much success with the Gentry selling my clothing. It's a consignment boutique (not a store) and if you don't find something there today - go back in a few weeks and I am sure you will find something GORGEOUS to wear. read more

As a consigner at their store, the staff is not welcoming and makes many errors when inventorying your items. You are told you will receive an itemized list within a few days but do not. If you consign there, be sure to photograph your items ahead of time and keep an accurate list. Caution to those bringing their quality clothes to this store. read more

Great store. Great staff. Great selection. I was never into this consignment thing until I popped into Gentry's and found a beautiful buttery leather jacket in mint condition for $30 (marked down from $60... probably retailed for $300). Now I shop here first. And I bring in all the nice things I'm no longer wearing...so someone else can enjoy them (and I get some extra spending money). I get a detailed list of what I brought in and how much they're selling for, and they always cut a check promptly when asked. These folks are very trustworthy and professional, and a pure delight. I had a VERY aggravating experience trying to consign items at this store. I ended up with a LARGE men's wardrobe after a family friend passed away and I was having a difficult time finding a consignment shop that would take mens clothing. I called the shop, clearly explained the situation, and set up an appointment (for a month later) to take the clothing in. The lady on the phone told me that the cloths all had to be clean, pressed and hanging. SO, I went through the process of cleaning, pressing and hanging ALL of the clothes. Then A MONTH LATER, on the day of my appointment, I call to confirm the time. Only then did the lady tell me that I can't bring in more than 20 items at a time, and oh ya, they don't take men's clothing. It was beyond frustrating. read more

If you are in the Newburyport area, stop by this little hidden gem of a consignment store! Found some very high end labels in exquisite condition for a fraction of the cost. Great selection, varied styles, shoes and bags. Everything was clean, neat, organized, and current. This is not dated junk. I found some very unique items! read more
