Came here with my family about a week ago for dinner. We've been to George-Lu many times over the years when visiting Manasquan. The ambiance is cozy and we got a booth by the window. Our server was attentive and working very hard to take care of us, other done-in customers, and take out orders. All our food and appetizers were delicious. Highly recommend general tso's bean curd and also the dragon and phoenix. Glad to see this spot is still serving up great Chinese food!! read more

Very Good food which is the point first off, but waitress sneezes at your table like it's no big deal. Sneezes while taking your order. Like turns around sneezes all over not covering her face or anything just blasts it out . That's not a good look. Sniffing. Yikes. Both of us caught whatever she had like not long after. So go for the food but beware of the sneezing sniffing waitress. I doubt I'll be back after that. Shame too cause it has a neat vibe like the Chinese restaurant in 'a Christmas story". Place looks old fashioned in a good way. I loved the food but the careless germ spreading right in my face made me wonder what might be happening behind the scenes. Best Chinese food I've ever had! Place has been there for as long as I can remember. Everything is amazing and it never gives me indigestion like a lot of other Chinese food places. General Tso, Crab Rangoon, orange sesame, the boneless and bone in ribs, the house lo mein are my favorites. read more

My first time here and I loved it. They have a dining room and also have take out. The dining room is very clean and have a few tables as well as comfortable booths. A few high top window seats if you'd like yo people watch. I ordered the Shrimp with garlic sauce. The shrimp were tender and so flavorful. It came with a medley of chinese veggies and side of pork fried rice. Loved the rice as well. It have chucks of pork in it and it was delicious. The dinner also came with choice of soup. I choose wonton which was not the best If ever had but it was good. I prefer a much darker broth with slices of pork and bok choy in my wonton. This two additions make it much more flavorful in my opinion. Service was good as well. I noticed they have $7.95 lunch specials. I will give that a try the next time I'm in the area. read more

A caricature of a Chinese Restaurant from the 1950's that never kept up with the times. It's the type of Chinese our grandparents knew; a solid 2-star Cantonese reminiscent of the Chinese restaurant in the movie "A Christmas Story", complete with such menu items like Chicken Chow Mein, Egg Foo Yung, Chop Suey and Egg Roll. Only it's not a joke. The boneless spare ribs were hard, chewy and sickeningly sweet, the fried dumplings were probably microwaved --- room temp on the outside and too hot on the inside. The broccoli and garlic was ok and the mu shu pork wasn't bad (otherwise it would have been rated 1-star). No low -sodium soy sauce was available. They put out those deep fried chips with that sweet duck sauce. Of course the check arrived with two plastic wrapped fortune cookies. Even in a small town like Manasquan, this place is so very dated. read more

Years since my last visit and unfortunately went here again last evening for a quick bite to eat. Disappointing to say the least and I'm being kind giving them two stars. Won ton soup horrible as well those fried noodles on the table that were burnt in the fryer. Steamed dumplings blah and forget about my main course of pork and vegetables, simply bad. The one neat thing they had going for themselves was the old school charm of the decor which is now long gone by way of a recent refurbishment. Now relegated to the wasteland of Chinese American restaurants here in Monmouth County that do not make the grade. I will not go here again. read more

We just moved to Manasquan from the Chicago area. Tried delivery the other night and were super impressed. The delivery was prompt, food hot and fresh. The delivery driver was a very polite and friendly young man. We ordered the wonton soup, crab Rangoon, egg rolls, boneless spare ribs, and General chicken. Everything was fresh and delicious. Crab rangoons were the best we have had. Actually stopped into the restaurant tonight for hot tea, soup and an egg roll. Super cute , clean and comfy. Husband, wife and son team, very friendly and welcoming. This will be our go-to place for Chinese food. What a gem:-) read more

The take out lo mein and fried rice were delicious as were the steamed dumplings. This place has been around since I was a kid. My parents used to take us for dinner there in the 60's most of the other businesses are long gone but George-Lu's is still going strong. They must be doing something right. read more

Tried this place based on the other Yelp reviews. We should have gone elsewhere. The food was worse than what passes for "food" at most other NJ Chinese restaurants. Not sure how fried dumplings can be worse, but my son said they were not good. I got General Tzo's Shrimp from the Chef Specialties section since I figured out shrimp is the only thing Chinese restaurants can't fake, unlike chicken and beef which are usually balls or strips of gristle, fat and dough. The shrimp seemed ok. But the sauce was more like sweet and sour sauce which I do not care for. Not close to being able to rate this place as good. The only thing I can confirm about the other reviews is when you go in it seems like you stepped back into the fifties. Sub-par food. I was hoping to find a diamond in the rough but just found another rock like all the others. read more

The last time I went to George Lu's was 20 years ago. It was not very good and haven't been back since. I decided to give it another chance and ordered lunch for take out. Their menu said $6.35 but they charged $7.35 plus $0.50 because it was the weekend. Their website did not reflect the new prices so it was a small ($3.00) sticker shock when I got the bill. Also added eggrolls to the lunch. Eggrolls were fair but were not greasy which is a plus. Won-ton soup was ok, my wife liked it a lot. The meals were very generous enough for 2 meals so I know what my lunch will be tomorrow. Shrimp with Chinese veggies was good and the Gen Tso chicken was very good. Fried rice was fair, not as greasy as others I have had but also not as flavorful. The restaurant was small and not great looking. I would not dine-in. Overall the food was good to very good maybe 3.5 stars. read more

This is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in the area. Unfortunately, I live in Brick, so it's a little bit of a ride for Chinese take out and I didn't even bother asking about delivery. This place doesn't make a pretense of being authentic, meaning it's Americanized Chinese food. You won't find Dan Dan Noodles, Sea Cucumber, or Xiao Long Bao here. They have what most Americans think of as Chinese food: Wonton Soup, Chow Mein (which was actually whipped up in San Francisco by Chinese railroad workers end of 19th century), General Tso's Chicken, finished with a fortune cookie (also invented in San Francisco). Since it was my first time, I stuck to the basics; ordered a perfectly fried spring roll and Sauteed Stringbeans. Unfortunately, on the menu, they're listed as "sauteed dried string beans", but they were the garden variety kind you find at any supermarket. Nevertheless, they were very good, crisp and not drenched in too much gooey sauce, as is often the case. Most importantly, they were not over-salted. The sauce was very well balanced. George-Lu is the best surviving example of classic, unreconstructed New York / New Jersey post war Chinese restaurants. Not the cheap generic slop of modern shameless purveyors of cheap disgusting initiations this is the genuine article. Original Cantonese recipes unashamedly Westernized and spiked with an extra does of deliciousness. The space is small, immaculate, and serves as a veritable time capsule of Boomer-era Chinese. The food is fresh, high quality, and a ridiculously good value. Service is speedy, friendly, and moves with an effortless grace. If there was such a thing as culinary justice this would be declared a historic landmark! Do yourself a favor - come out and try the food that launched Chinese cuisine in the USA. read more

Take out. The woman answering the phone for food orders had a very difficult time comprehending the order. It had to be repeated 4 times. The ribs and egg roll both good. My wife ordered spicy sesame noodles with peanut sauce. Not spicy and the cook neglected to add the peanut sauce. I ordered and asked for an extra spicy Kung Po Chicken. Forget extra or even spicy it was bland. Cook too lazy to cut chicken to bite size. Needless to say this restaurant is off our list read more

Extremely rude and no class! Absolutely terrible customer service. Delivered my order 3 weeks ago and it took almost 2 hours when they said 45 min. I understand they are busy, no problem. When they delivered order was wrong. They told me on the phone that night to call on next order and they would give free combo platter. I thought that was a perfect compromise. Just called tonight for to get free combo platter and they will not honor it. Spoke to same woman as well. More disgusted with lack of business etiquette than anything. read more

The vegetables in all of the dishes are really fresh and not overcooked or over done with goopy sauce. The spicy chicken was spicy, but not overpowering. Same with the garlic pork. The place was a normal Chinese restaurant. The food came out quick. The chicken on a stick was good although kind of fatty. The shrimp w lobsterr sauce was good although the shrimp weren't hot, they were cooked and I suspect reheated but not enough. The food is good but they always always always mess up the order. They forget stuff or twice they gave me wrong order. Beware!!!!!

An unfortunate experience tonight. Service was slow. The noodles were burned and greasy. The wontons in the wonton soup were dried out like hey had been exposed to air and were hard. The eggroll was cold in places and hot in other places like they had heated it in the microwave or something. I had to ask for a serving spoon. I even had to ask for a PLATE! Disorganized. I've been coming here for years and each time I get the same thing but tonight it just didn't taste good. And the disorganized service was bad. read more

I worked here for years and years and can tell you the kitchen is immaculate and all of the ingredients are fresh. They are a wonderful group of people who serve the best Chinese-American food in the area. For the one reviewer who was disappointed this isn't "genuine" Chinese food, it is the same as calling tacos "genuine" Mexican food. If you want authentic Chinese cuisine, why did you go to a place that says Chinese-American food on the front sign?
