The George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX, is a hub for conferences and large-scale events. The convention center was strategically right across the street from our hotel. My friends and I decided to attend a women's body building conference at George R. Brown convention center. We have all toyed with the idea of participating in a bodybuilding contest. Then you think about the strict clean eating, intense workout routines and the number of supplements you dump into body, then you press the pause button. We found our way into the arena where the women's bodybuilding contest was taking place. The room was filled with anticipation, admiration, and respect. When the athletes stepped on stage, the entire space seemed to zero in on them...their massively lean bodies, muscle definition and their practiced poses. While we watched with admiration, none of us committed to pull the trigger on body building. The George R. Brown Convention Center provided the perfect backdrop to explore the possibility of bodybuilding. In addition, we perused the vendors present associated with fitness. They say things are bigger in Texas, and if you're talking about Convention Centers, then this one definitely stands out. It's in the top ten by sq ft in the US, but that long hallway seems to go on forever and forever. I was here for a convention (duh) and everything was in one general area. There were lots of escalators to move between floors, and lots of hotels and restaurants around to accommodate the crowd. Very well done. Bathrooms were kept clean but they could use an update with some barriers and some spacing. There were lots of water filling stations and the staff kept up with refilling things like coffee and drinks they were providing. Lunch provided in the convention hall was done well. It was "lunch" fare for sure with sandwiches and salads and stuff like that, but they kept everything organized in feeding a bunch of attendees. I ate at both Pappadeux's and Saltgrass which are connected to the Convention Center and both were excellent choices. read more

I attended the American Meteorological Society's 106th Annual Meeting and 25th Annual Student Conference (Jan. 24-Jan. 29). Compared to other cities and convention centers that have hosted this event, I fear this convention center didn't hit the mark. This is a rather large scale conference (6000+ annual attendees). In this specific center, we took up practically a whole floor. The big props to this center is that they could fit us on one floor, compared to the other cities that have hosted. Additionally, I think the convention center as a whole was very pretty and well-maintained. There were some temperature control issues that I noticed throughout the week; however, I'll just chalk that up to the inconsistency of the Houston temperature. However, when it comes to ammenities for these types of meetings, GRB did not match-up. There were minimal outlets around, and for most of us attendees, we have to continue working throughout the conference. If your computer or phone dies quickly, invest in portable chargers if you're attending a conference here. There is a Starbucks on site; however, the hours are very finnicky. If you're looking for an afternoon coffee, you'll likely be searching elsewhere. One other thing to note (and maybe this was just the staffing for our conference) is there seemed to be miscommunication between venue security and our conference planners, especially for the Sunday poster session. Us students were told to hang our posters and leave the space immediately. We were also told that as presenters, we would not be allowed back in until 7 p.m., which is when the session and judging for the session was set to start. The security member watching over the poster hall seemed to be a bit rude to my fellow presenters too when they questioned why we wouldn't be allowed in early to get fully prepared. read more

What a well laid out convention Center this is! I found the distribution of water fountains and the overall temperature regulation moving great given how many tens of thousands people were at the convention. Honestly I only had one issue with the building -- the escalators. Things were happening on all three floors, and for whatever reason escalators kept breaking down, and sometimes only one was operational to get between the floors. It caused some serious lines. And of course the elevator wasn't reliable, and stairs were not an option because doors were locked coming from the stairwells. If that wasn't an issue, I think my experience would have been perfect! read more

Came for the Chevron Houston marathon and expo as well as for my boyfriend to pick up his packet for the run. This is a nice conference center. The rooms are easy to find. Signage is great. It does need updating which I believe it is getting soon. The bathrooms are very old and out of date. The center is a bit too cold so definitely take a jacket! I love the location in discovery green. Parking is much more expensive than it used to be. The staff is friendly. read more

The George R Brown Convention Center is located in the heart of downtown and nearby some hotels, a decent sized park, and nice restaurants/bars that are great to take customers to if you are in town for a conference like I was. Overall, the facility is nice and large making it great for events like conferences but there are a few negative experiences I've encountered there. One, my company was charged $500 for slow wifi over three days even after spending thousands of dollars for a booth. Two, on the first floor, the bathroom is on the basement level with steep stairs. I saw multiple people almost fall down them. The cleaning crew also seem to clean all the bathrooms at the same time. I had to use them and all the bathrooms on the first and second floor were being cleaned and closed. Three, I wish they did a better job at climate control. I personally can't handle the Texas heat and humidity so appreciated the blasting AC but many of my team members and customers complained that it was way too cold in the exhibition hall. read more

My Notifications beckoned me to review the GRB so here I go. It's been a fixture of the Houston skyline when viewed from the south for more than 30 years. Architecture afficionados know that the building looks like a cruise ship, which I find interesting. I've been to the GRB quite a few times, those few times being Super Bowl XXXVIII (38) in 2004, the 2006 NBA All-Star Weekend, the 2016 Final Four, and Super Bowl LI (51) in 2017. Point of fact, I was here a few nights ago during the Texans Draft Watch Party at Avenida Houston. We were kindly welcomed to take refuge when it began to rain gard. The GRB is very spacious, making it the ideal place for conventions (DUH!), expositions, and even shows. Its massive glass windows provide a beautiful, picturesque view of Houston's equally visually pleasing skyscrapers. And, foodies, there are restaurants on the premises and its vicinity. If I'm not mistaken, it will undergo an expansion just in time for the 2026 World Cup when the games will be played here in Houston. read more

This is an outstanding convention center. I was surprised to learn that this place isn't even the largest convention venue in Texas, much less the rest of the country, because it is huge. I first attended an event here about 20 years ago -- the Texas Nurseryman's Association Annual Convention. There were tractors, trees, greenhouses -- you name it -- everywhere ... with room to spare. I've more recently attended a dinner here in the Grand Ballroom, and it was fabulous. But parking... My goodness! It cost me $48 for three hours of self-parking in one of the garages. Sure, it was easy in and easy out, but that's truly ridiculous on a Thursday evening when half the garage is empty. I've paid less to park in NYC for the day. I paid less to ride the bullet train for a 200-mile trip in Japan. C'mon, Houston! You can do better than this! read more

This convention center knows how to run an event! My fiancé and I were in town for the Chevron Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon. Both the pre-race expo and post-race happenings took place at the convention center. They handled both phenomenally being organized, staff knowledgeable, had great signage posted to direct visitors, and was very clean. I see why the event leans on the convention center so much as it's the perfect venue to house everyone! The convention center has skyway access to Hilton Americas as well as Marriott Marquis. They had a lot of restaurants attached or nearby which was great! It also directly walked out to the Avenida Plaza which connects to Discovery Green space. read more

This convention center is huge and accommodates large amounts of people. It has various meeting spaces and halls to meet the size of participants. Additionally the AC kept con goers cool all weekend and didn't have to worry about sweating. I really loved that its connected to the Marriott too which made it easier to stay out of Houston heat. read more

I called at least 3 times leading up to an event and left messages. Not one returned call. We attended a robotics championship for 3 full days with no resources for gluten free options. I've got a gluten free teen, and I couldn't find one resource. We can't bring in our own food and beverages so we are trapped without food with 80k people for 3 full days. I would never book an event here. There is also a shortage of seating, with plenty of people forced to sit and eat on the floor. So they charge for 80k people but don't provide ample comfortable seating or food. It is an impossibly long line to even get coffee, so if you are competing on a schedule, there's no time to even wait in line for that. Disgraceful. read more

June 2024, first time here. Husband and I got a ticket to see the NBA draft. We stayed in Marriott Marquis so we didn't have to drive and park at the convention, we just walked over. The center is huge and could be a little bit confusing. The VIP area was nicely decorated and barricaded good. read more

Ventured up to GRBCC , for the The Dr Seuss Experience with kids. Parking wasn't a issue garage across street. On arrival we entered and host scanned mobile tickets. It was colorful and whimsical like Candytopia , which kept the kids attention. Themed rooms about 6 rooms, and one contained a Merry go round for the kids to ride , each room had some type of interaction. Overall it was entertaining and the kids enjoyed themselves. read more

The convention center itself is nice and huge they can definitely accommodate multiple events/games. We visited for a weekend volleyball tournament and I was unimpressed with the employees and customer service received. At multiple of the food venues the employees were rude or flat out didn't respond to questions. The Starbucks closed early even though their hours showed differently. The lines to the bathrooms are ridiculously long and some stalls hoarded with tissue everywhere. I also did not enjoy having to show the barcode from the email each time to enter the game area (due to long bathroom lines mostly had to go out to use the bathroom). It's a smoother process to show a wristband vs. a barcode and your government issued ID. The parking is expensive for an all day-all weekend event. I would have prepared a weekend parking pass instead of $35 a day. Most restaurants connected to the convention center had a 2 hour plus wait to be seated so we opted for places closer to the hotel or takeout. I did enjoy the fact their was a park and roller skating rink right out front with a nice green area to take a break from ten tournament but I will def be prepared better if we visit again. read more

They should use it a little more often and come up with alternative uses, so that it can be taken advantage of every day of every week and every month every year, instead of just sporadically. It's a huge landmark for downtown Houston. It brought so many visitors from out of town and folks living in Houston. Looking at the map, it's on the other end of downtown if you want to take a tour from the other end. I've been here only for huge meetings and events. It takes a great deal of coordination to host an event here. But I've been to other convention centers in major cities, George R Brown Convention Center is far better. Parking is available everywhere, not free but reasonable. The concierge desk folks are friendly and helpful. They offer tourist information. I love to be a tourist in my city. Find me with 2 cell cameras and a GoPro action camera on my head. Please wave back if I wave at you. Finding restrooms in the lobby is a bit challenge. I can go to both sides of lobby on the same floor. But if I started to look for it in the middle of the floor, I have to walk down the flights of stairs with my old body. Recent years, City of Houston renovated the road in the front to include eateries and closes to traffic flows. So, getting dropped off would be more walking. The George R Brown Convention Center is huge. Its bigger than the one back home in Vancouver BC. So came here during the Anime convention and to my surprise this place is big. The exhibition and showrooms are massive. This is a three floors building. Mostly just meeting or convention or exhibition halls. The first floor is the most beautiful and cleanest. Attached to the Convention Center are restaurants. Outside is pretty nice as well. In the front there are artworks/statues etc. Cool place to have events held. read more

I am all about the experience. I have a lot of friends into Anime so I tried something different that I found in the city at the George R. Brown called, Anime Masturi 2021. I've never been to anything like this. It was very diverse. People from all walks of life ‍‍‍‍‍ check in and participated by wearing some of the most elaborately detailed costumes of their favorite anime characters. I felt out of place not having on a costume ‍ but I took enough photos of everyone else's. They had great food, anime merchandise at the booths, a Japanese car show and a lot of costume events and games. I got a new backpack Jafar purse from Cordy's Corner. It's very convention-y! As far as convention centers go, I know about the ones that are dogs....I live in NYC and we're stuck with the sub-par Javits Center, which is small, awkward and miles (alright, blocks) away from anything. The GRB (as my local friends called it) is right downtown by the lovely Discovery Green. Target Center, Minute Maid Park and BBVA Field are each a block away and there's tons of restaurants and hotels within a five minute walk. The center itself is well laid out and easy to get around. I like the bright red and blue exposed ductwork. I went there for the Marathon package pickup as well as the post-race activities and I found the place easy to navigate and user friendly. Reading some reviews, a few people lament this Convention Center but in my eyes, you have it pretty good. I say enjoy the GRB and don't sweat the petty stuff (and don't pet the sweaty stuff) read more

I've attended conventions in many cities and the GRB facilities just don't compare. It's quite an ugly building. It reminds me of a cruise ship from the 80's with it's big red pipes that look like steam escapes for some type of machinery. That would all be fine if the inside of easier to navigate. There are not well sign posted maps or information boards. When we walked in last night, we happened to walk in the right doors, but other people we were with didn't and wandered for quite a while. I would expect electronic boards with posted information, but instead we just had to depend on the crowds and went like cattle along with them. The actual facilities are fine. There are three levels of space. We were in the George Bush Ballroom on the 3rd floor which sat about 5000+ people at a banquet last night. On previous occasions, I have been in graduation ceremonies on the lower floors. One nice addition (since the other posters did their review) is Discovery Green. There is now a lovely park across the street. You can park below it and then wander around there before and after your convention center event. You can also grab lunch in the park. The parking below the park was $10 per person with a nice side helping of frustration as it took us 45 minutes to exit the parking garage. The banquet we attended was catered by the GRB facilities. The food was good and the service was fine. We had chicken, pasta and green beans. The bread, drinks, and dessert were all good as well. The close proximity to the new Hilton hotel is a plus. They offer valet parking in case you don't find street parking or can't find space below Discovery Green. Overall, the layout and ease of use of the GRB just aren't up to what I've seen at other places. read more

Finally got the chance to visit this place. Pretty neat. I was ecstatic to find out they actually have an enclosed nursing area with a recliner AND fridge! Only one outlet though. Bring your battery operated one just in case. I am here for the quilt festival and it is pretty impressive so far. There are tons of people but there is plenty of parking and Discovery Green Park is right across. There are a few places to eat inside the convention center but I'm not sure of the prices. . .usually if it's not an exact location they charge more. There is a Starbucks and a Pappadeaux's! There are restrooms everywhere!!! But I wish there were more elevators. read more

I was a vendor at the International Quilt Show a few weeks ago. Parking for vendors is HORRENDOUS. I'm not sure who runs the parking area in the back where we unload/reload, but they were literally taking money from people even though there was no parking! That was a bit disgusting and disheartening. We spent a week here. For the most part it was okay. If you ever need to come here bring lots of cash because you will be paying for parking and the restaurants around Downtown Houston are a bit pricey. The art work within the convention center are beautiful and from upstairs you can enjoy a Starbucks on the balcony. The balcony area over looks the park so it makes for a nice little break away from whatever you are doing. read more

There isn't much to say about a convention center, but George R Brown is a very large one and it's more or less in the middle of downtown so it's accessible for people from out of town as well as those who either live in the area or come to downtown often. The only other convention center that I have gone to in town is the Reliant Arena. Both have horrible and dim lighting, lousy and overpriced food, and outrageous parking. George R Brown at least has parking close to the convention center in an underground garage whereas in Reliant, you have to do the death March past the big stadium, and that little stadium formerly known as the Astrodome, park under the hot sun, and do another death March to the convention center. If I had to pick one, I would pick George R Brown every time because there is always something else to do in the area before or after the convention whether it's going to the Discovery Green green space where they have shows and other activities, walking to the bars and restaurants in the area, or catching a game. With the other place, there is nothing else to do. read more

This place needs better signs. Decent location when there is no construction. Today at 5, although they were having an event, place was pretty empty on 1st floor. 2nd floor had about 4 people who asked me for directions. After I helped them, I headed downstairs and walked outside. Another asked me if doors were open, told him yes. Then, after I crossed the street, another person asked me if they could catch the bus. Side note: parking is available at meters, you have to pay till 5:59 weekdays and Saturdays now. Meter takes bills and cards. Right across street is Discovery Green. You can bike ride, walk your pet, bring your cat, and eating places with outdoors in case you get tired of being cooped inside. Phoencia is minutes away by walking which has some tasty food, drinks and stays open into the evening. read more
