I took my younger brother to George's Barber Shop yesterday, and the barber did a great job with him. I was very pleased. We were referred by a family friend. My brother struggles with a disability, and I really appreciated how gentle and patient the barber was with him. He made sure to include my brother in the process, asking him questions about how he wanted his hair, which helped him feel comfortable. It was great to see that level of care. I hope to bring my brother back the next time we're in the area. Their prices are also very reasonable. Definitely a hidden gem! I've been coming here for years and even now that I've moved out of town, I still stop every once in a while to get my haircut with Don Jesus in the morning. I'm sure that in the afternoons, it's more hectic. Believe me, I remember when I use to go at those hours. They had plenty of barbers, so it would move quick. Unless you were waiting for someone in particular. Then, you would have to wait and see how many people he/she had ahead of you. Since I haven't been there lately when it's super busy in the afternoons, my review is based solely on the morning part of the day. By around 8:30-9:00, Don Jesus opens and sometimes there's no one waiting. It's usually the older folks who come at this time, to no have to wait long and to talk about the good old days. I enjoy those conversations. He takes his time cutting your hair. Yes, he talks to you and other people who pass by selling stuff, or clientele, but he is working on your hair. Nowadays, there are some barbers who stop and talk and can't seem to multitask. Not an issue with him. He pays close attention to detail and will definitely give you a boost in appearance, lol. The price is $15. Well worth it in my books. That's about the ongoing average rate around and he goes above and beyond, even cleaning up the edges with the sharp blade. Okay, I feel conflicted leaving this review because the owner was really nice and promised to give my son a haircut for his first day at kindergarten, but i really doubt I'll ever be back. I wanted a haircut for my two kids and we waited about 45 minutes, and I guess the lady there was up next in rotation. I showed her that my 3 y/o wanted a mohawk, a regular, traditional complete mohawk. I even showed the lady a picture for reference (even though everyone knows what a mohawk is!!) TELL ME WHY AS SOON AS I TURN MY BACK, MY SON COMES OFF THE CHAIR WITH A CHICKEN LITTLE FOHAWK!?!?!? I didn't wanna cause a scene, but my dumba$$ let my other son get up with her too -.- I showed her a picture of how he wanted it. Short on the sides, but longer in the front for spiking up a little. SHE LITERALLY GAVE HIM A BUZZ CUT. No clean hairline, not shorter on the sides, just all around military looking buzz cut. The whole time she just kept talking to another lady, chismeando with her even though the lady wasn't there to get a haircut. I really wanted to say something, but I just decided to leave instead. Sure I'm biased with my review. My dad and brother own this shop. Let me convince you on why you should come here. This place is a fixture in San Pedro. I recall seeing my dad make his name in his backyard under an orange tree in Wilmington, Ca. I was five years old at the time. He used to pull up a chair from the kitchen and whip out a few cuts for his friends and neighbors. He earned his reputation and clientele just this way. My brother George and sister Veronica followed in his footsteps. My brother convinced me to start getting a new haircut at about the age of 15. According to him, this new style( shave fade, medium fade, with a 1 1/2 on the top) was going to make an impact on the barber scene. Seventeen years later I still have the same haircut. I compare my haircuts at other barber shops to my dad's and brother's all the time. The only other barber that can live up to these standards is Nam from Silver Blade Barber Shop in Norwalk, Ca. My brother showed me that the guest was always a priority. You can knock on the door after my brother shuts down the shop, and he will still open it up for you. It's all about the customer here. He patiently cuts your hair and invests the extra time on those tough spots that other barbers pass up. I have many memories of my dad and brother's shop. He can talk to you about any thing freely. Politics, life, family, problems. A great barber is really someone you can trust with information. My dad and brother can be trusted. These guys have cut hair for multiple generations. You can still get the old school haircuts here. You can get a hot towel over your face, with a shave using a straight razor. If you are an older gentleman, you can expect to have your ear hairs and nose hairs clipped without asking. If you have bushy eyebrows, like older gentlemen tend to get, they get trimmed. They finish you off with powder poured into a soft brush and dust away the excess hair. You get off the barber chair feeling ready to take on the next seven days assured you look your best. I chose not to be a barber, but I gotta tell you these guys will win you over. You will keep going back and back again. Sounds cheesy but if you regularly go to a barbershop you just tell them a specific cut and that's it. These guys would constantly ask me to jeep them updated if I want a line up a deeper cut, they even suggest their own hairstyles from there preference and it'll actually work out when they ask you for a suggestion from their point of view. Not only that but it feels like these people are family, joke around when it comes to it but not all the time, and everyone makes me feel welcomed. I've been coming here since 2005, I was recommended by a friend who got his haircut by Arturo and assured George's was the best barber shop in San Pedro. It was true then and holds true to this day. Georges is reminiscent of an old New York or Chicago style barber shop. Its a place for men to come, shoot the shit and partake in a classic haircut. The only thing they're missing is a beer cooler. There's 3 generations of family barbers in there and they make you feel like family too. Every barber will leave you fresh, even the new apprentices, but Arturo, Andy, George and Chuy are my go to guys. I've been to other barber shops in Pedro, a lot of em are flashy and charge an arm and a leg. I get barbers are independent contractors and all but some of these other shops charge $25+ for a haircut and who can afford that? I've been coming to this barber shop for about 6 month now. I'm a female who has an undercut and I had been going to several different barbers and none of them left it like I wanted it. Maybe it was because I wasn't familiar with the terminology of a barber...anyway I decided to try them out since it was close to my house and they stay open until 8 p.m. Jay cut my hair and honesty (sorry Jay) it wasn't the greatest but he was very personable and upbeat so I decided to give him another shot, and boy am I glad I did. Jay pays very close attention to detail to make sure he gives the client what they want and takes pride in his work. Today he really out did himself, he did a nape undercut with a Lotus design for my daughter and a heart design on me. I completely trust Jay and would recommend him to anyone.
