Plenty of staff, courteous, observing social distancing. Seems popular with locals- we got large scallops, dozen ea of clams and oysters- (kept in a walk-in coolerstaff were able to make recommendations on salinity of oysters. The scallops were delicious! We steamed 6 of the oysters(6 raw) and all the clams- there were 3 bad of each...I think that's why most place give you a few extra. They had a large Selection of whole fish and looked like some nice cuts of loin. I was just vacationing and found this thru Yelp. I would go back. read more

Classic. Old-school fishmongers. I visit family in Norfolk often, and I sorely wish we had a seafood shop like this where I live! They stock good fresh fish -- whatever is running and in season right now -- laid out whole, on ice. A nice range; always some small bony fish for frying (spot, croaker, porgy, etc), and a good assortment of large fish. They'll debone anything for you -- skin on or skin off, as you prefer. They have all the basic shellfish, fresh, as well as a freezer case with some more exotic items like conch. Staff are friendly, and hugely knowledgeable, and will advise about cooking, etc. If you're frustrated with the limited selection in most of the grocery stores (I love salmon and tilapia, but there's so much more than that in the sea!), this place may be your answer. read more

Everyone here was very nice. They'll prepare and/or steam your seafood for you - we got blue crabs and shrimp. They ask you how heavy to go on the seasoning. The quality was awesome, although I highly suggest calling to see if they have female crabs in stock (female crabs cost about half as much as male cause they have less meat. They were out of females when we went. The males were more expensive, but delicious. Our shrimp was perfect too. They have a wide variety of shrimp, scallops, and fish as well. Been a here a couple of times. My first time, I came across some nice mackerels and fell immediately in love. Our romance however, did not last for long as the place just stinks and the level of cleanliness is next to nil. Will still go for the occasional mackerel. read more

Unfriendly and don't care if you are there are not. Went in to get oysters and large shrimp. 4 guys working on cutting up fish. 1 guy was helping a lady gutting and cleaning many fish. I waited for 30 minutes to get helped. I should have left but driving all the way from Chesapeake would have been a huge waste of time. On top of this, their credit card machine didn't work! Order a bushel of #1 blue claws from Dillion and crew. Crabs were seasoned perfectly, heavy, and sweet! Only complaint was they couldn't do credit card over phone, so 2 trips- one to pay for order at noon to ensure I could get #1s and back at 5:30 for pickup. And yes it was worth the two trips. read more

I have been going here for years and it has gone down hill. I went to get red snapper. I paid to have the fish cleaned and filleted but when I got them home the meat had been completely torn apart, there were so many bones, and there were also alot of scales on the fish. Hardly worth the amount I paid for the poor quality that I received. read more

It is a true seafood house, that's for sure. You walk in and it is the expected ice bins showing off fresh catches of the day. They had my order (2 bushels of MONGO HUGE Gulf Oysters. Spent the remainder of the day steaming, eating and enjoying the best oysters I have had. Almost no "blanks" and they even helped me load them in my van. I had my friend in Norfolk to stop by this place because we now live in Chesapeake. I thought they carried fresh snow crab leg clusters, but they only have precooked frozen ones like you get from Farm Fresh. They were 10.00 a pound. However, they charge an extra dollar a pound to steam them. Farm Fresh steams them for you free, no matter how many pounds you buy. The taste and quality, in my opinion, was no better than Farm Fresh, Not worth a trip to Norfolk. read more

I typically only come here in the fall for the oysters. And the other 1 star reviews are not even close to what I experience when I am here. One of the 1 star reviews isn't even for this place it is for Captain Georges in VA. Beach. The other 1 star I'm not real sure what they were expecting when they walked into a local seafood market but I think they were expecting the seafood counter at a grocery store. That being said it may not look the cleanest and yes it smells of fish. But the people have always been friendly and very helpful. Prices are fair and never had a bad oyster from there. read more

I usually recieve good products from George's, but the last three times I visited George's I was disappointed with the level of customer service. This last visit was the last straw! On last thursday May 30th at 5:40 in the evening. as soon as I entered the establishment I was informed that anything I chose I would have to take whole and "clean it myself" because they were ready to close! Needless to say I was astonished and after begging him please prep the fish I needed two or three times, I decided just to forego ever returning. I hope that this review helps! read more

Yesterday evening, my desire for fresh fish for dinner brought me to George's Seafood, and I must say a lot must've changed since fellow Yelper Fred came last year. When I walked in, there was no acknowledgement of me being there. When I requested assistance with my chosen option, the associate let me know I'd have to buy the fish whole. I inquired (since it's a seafood distributor) if there was an option to have it cleaned and scaled. He advised no, since he was cleaning. To be fair, I will say they do close at six and it was about 5:40 when I went. I was about to leave but then asked if there were any pre-cleaned and filleted fish options. He pointed to a different counter. I walked over to it. There was a huge puddle of water in front of it so I was only able to stand in one corner to view the available options. There was only 1 group of fish that was labeled. I was hugely disappointed since I make a point of supporting smaller businesses but the associate made it clear that he did not care about me as a customer. Going forward, I will have to satisfy my seafood cravings elsewhere. read more

Best seafood house, ever! They have local oysters, gulf oysters, and then the fancy oysters. The Gulf oysters were of excellent quality. I didn't realize how heavy a half-bushel could be. But, since I didn't have to carry it to my truck, I didn't mind. :) The staff was fantastic, and very informative. If you want to cook your own, this is the best place for any fresh seafood catch. The business also has a small carry-out if you don't want to cook and buy your oysters already fried. yummy. read more
