I have been a patient of Dr. Kupiec for many years. I first stated seeing her when she was on the staff at Georgetown University Hospital. I liked her so much I even followed her to her new location when she went into private practice. Dr. Kupiec is kind, considerate, and good listener. Most importantly in my case, she has an "eagle eye" for spotting early stage skin cancers, at a time when they can be easily treated and before they become too serious. I have had many skin cancers over the years, due in large part to my fair complexion. Thanks to Dr. Kupiec, they were all caught early. I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Kupiec's skills and abilities as a practitioner of medical dermatology. She said someone would call back. That never happened. I called back 12 days later. I've been going here for several years. Maria is always great, very thorough during my annual mole check, and Dr. Kauffman is great when there's anything suspicious that needs her opinion or treatment. Unlike other dermatology offices I've been to that act like they are only there to rule out cancer, Maria is proactive about also dealing with the weird little noncancerous bumps that my skin creates. EXCELLENT customer service from the front desk up to the doctor! I went in due to a whitehead (blackhead, whichever it's called), that had turned into an ugly scab. Not much to others maybe, but it being right smack in the middle of my forehead, made it detrimental to me! I arrived early, and only had to wait a short time before being called to see the doctor. And please let me add that the receptionist at the entry desk was wonderfully pleasant and just a joy to chat with. A very professional and kind & charming young lady. Sorry that I cannot remember her name, but she was excited about visiting her son in the Dominican Republic soon!!! My experience with Dr. Maria Bertagnolli was just as enjoyable. She Is a high spirited person, with a very calm manner. She listened patiently, and made me instantly feel comfortable - Most importantly, she took my whitehead as seriously as I did!!! Alright, let's talk about this place. I was pretty excited to be a patient of here - the office is nice and there's a TV, and the people working behind the counter seemed nice enough. I believe I've done three visits now, and let me give you some highlights of what it's like. 1. The Wifi literally doesn't work, and there's no cell reception in the room. Forget about making a call or trying to text/go online to pass the time. It's just not going to happen. Many a time I've seen parents of children walk out of the waiting area exasperated because their calls drop. 2. The earliest I've ever been taken back to a room is 20 minutes after my appointment time. Latest was 47 minutes (I counted). Once you get led back to a room, you are effectively forgotten about. The first visit I waited an entire hour in the room before peeking my head out and asking if the doctor would be in soon. The aide in scrubs seemed exasperated with me before assuring me she'd be in soon - took about 15 more minutes. 3. Do the people who work here realize that the doors to the waiting rooms are incredibly thin? I can hear literally every single thing that you say to each other, so if you're chatting about getting drunk and having nights out with your friends, I can hear that too. Also please don't eat chips right in front of a door, the crunch sound is unbearable. 4. If you don't get an appointment right when the practice opens, do not bother. The last time I visited this office (which is partly what prompted me finally writing this review) I waited three hours. I took a half-day and left work at noon to get to my 1:30 appointment. I barely, barely made the 5:45 train to get home, and that's because I sprinted up and down stairs and took a lyft part of the way to Union. Not only did I wait three entire hours to be seen, I heard the doctor stand outside my door and say that she was tired, it was the end of the day, and frankly my case wasn't interesting enough for her to take, and would someone else take it off of her schedule. Which they did, and an additional doctor who I'd never met came in. I had to go over my entire medical history with her, because she had never seen it or reviewed it, which contributed to me being late. 5. I went to this office presenting with redness in my skin (rosacea, which is why I chose this office in the first place) and some small pimples on my jawline. I was put on Minocycline and Spirinolactone for five months, which I expressed apprehension about being on Minocyline for so long. Last visit they took me off of all medication. I now have the worst acne I've had in my entire life. I recognize that that seems like an overexaggeration - please understand that that is not the case. I spent 15 minutes extra in the morning now just putting on coverup and frankly I'm embarrassed to be outside. I called the office today to beg for a refill of just the Spirinolactone and the woman on the phone informed me that I'd have to come in for an appointment. I referenced my previous, 3-hour (and somewhat upsetting) visit and that I wouldn't be coming in, and she immediately became very rude. She said that she couldn't refill prescriptions 'just because I wanted them' despite the symptoms I was describing. I gave her my callback number and hung up. Honestly, if anyone is reading this review, please save yourself this headache. Don't ever try and do an appointment over lunch breaks, in the afternoon, in any time that you're pressed for time, or really at all. Don't come here if you don't have something 'interesting' for them to deal with. Oh, and don't you dare try and cancel an appointment. I had to cancel same-day due to a pair of unexpected deaths and the woman at the front counter, Avery, was extremely rude. I said "I am so sorry, but is there a fee to cancel same-day appointments? I have never done this before." she said "There's not, but there SHOULD be." and then said nothing else. Alright lady, I hope that you were able to get over the fact that my derm appointment, at an office that makes me wait several hours to be seen, wasn't exactly on the forefront of my mind that day. I called a couple of hours ago now, about the refill on the Spirinolactone. Still no call back. I called three separate practices and managed to get an appointment in November elsewhere and am on their cancellation list. Anywhere is better than here. Literally anywhere. For now I'll just start running through different face washes until I figure it out on my own. Until then I'm pretty SOL. Please don't go here. read more

I can't dispute someone else's personal experience, but I can say what I have consistently said to my wife upon dealing with Dr. Kupiec and this office. Their engagement, care, and attention have been outstanding. Their responsiveness has been terrific. I have found the front office people, the staff and Dr. Kupiec all to be incredibly friendly, professional and willing to find ways to make things work. In fact, this is by far the best trained staff/office I have visited in a long time, and I run my own organization and know how difficult that can be. I highly recommend this group. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Kupiec and Dr. Kaufman since Dr. Kupiec was Dr. Kaufman's resident. They are a seamless medical team. I am very particular, as my father was a medic in WWII, and taught Physiology to graduate medical students. I am also an attorney and mother to a child whose dermatology is a challenge. I am a graduate of Georgetown Law, and before Georgetown became a Medstar affiliate, I met Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Kupiec over poison oak. I am returning for an outbreak, to see a Physician Assistant. I would rather see a Physician Assistant at Georgetown Dermatology, than any medical professional in an Urgent Care, or any other dermatology practice. Georgetown Dermatology physicians take excellent care of me, my spouse, and my two children - it's a family practice. And have for over 20 years. My family sees one of the doctors each year for a pre-cancer screening, and have confidence in the Physician Assistants selected by the Drs. for emergency appointments -- I am a home gardener, and days before a major family event, I had an outbreak of poison oak! I received a prescription, and more importantly a sample, saving me a trip to the pharmacist, for which I had no time until after the event. I would also call Georgetown Dermatology first for signs of Lyme disease. I know the symptoms and would rather see a specialist who is a Physician Assistant than go to an Urgent Care generalist where my judgment might be questioned. My father taught me that some medical skills, like diagnosis, cannot be taught in a classroom -- they are learned. And a Georgetown Dermatology PA has never hesitated to call in a doctor if needed -- perhaps that is the reason why there are sometimes delays -- the emergencies are accommodated by the PA, but the consultations with the MDs, if needed, cannot be scheduled. I also believe that because this is a family practice, and the diagnosis can include cancer, that delays are to be accommodated by other patients. Some patients, some family members, need more time. One day it could be you or a member of your family. So I believe that waiting room delays are one of the benefits of this practice -- they accommodate patients, not schedules, and work daily as if they were part of a larger team, a community hospital -- where I met both Dr. Kaufman, who was then head of Georgetown Dermatology, and Dr. Kupiec. I am a designer as well as an attorney, and appreciate the fact that Dr. Kaufman's family helped design her office. The screen is always on, and in DC, news is entertainment. Magazines are varied, and ones that I don't read elsewhere, as well as local favorites. I purchase the products sold by Georgetown Dermatology, and have from the beginning of their manufacture. I look younger than my years, while most people with my "redhead" genetics look younger at first, and then age faster with the sun. I don't. Even after testing other more expensive products, sold by friends who are medical professionals, I always return to the combination of prescription and proprietary products sold by Georgetown Dermatology. They are very good and very affordable, and now Georgetown Dermatology sells the other brand I purchased commercially at their recommendation for the type of product that is not made exclusively for them (sunscreen). It's a one stop shop, and they mail what you need if they are out. Additionally, the practice keeps track of where the best buys can be made for prescriptions not covered by insurance. Costco, sometimes Target, their patients know. My only fault is that for some procedures that I do not consider cosmetic, I have been referred to doctors who do not take any insurance. But for anything that can be managed by this clinic, it's the only one I need. As for the facility, I have been seeing doctors in this building since 1981. Recently, the interior corridors were renovated, and even under renovation, the dust was managed. Note that the offices of Georgetown Dermatology were nicely renovated when the practice was opened, and are the cleanest of any doctor's office I have visited. The building's parking is an issue -- it is tighter than any I have known for a building this size. I try to schedule appointments when I can park on the street and walk a block or two. Bonus: a great Starbucks with seating inside/outside and WIFI, so it's a popular neighborhood and AU gathering place. Good pharmacies, a nearby gourmet grocery, and a children's boutique. Eyeglasses. Linens. Etc. Foxhall is a neighborhood institution, and the medical center is always going to attract the best practices. If you live in the area, you already know this -- but if you don't, it's a nice place to visit, hopefully only once or twice a year. Apologies to anyone who had a negative experience. Horrible! I was really disappointed in this place. When I called to see if they accepted my insurance, they said yes, only to find out they did not --- when it came time to pay. I was only able to get in to see the PA, who seemed really flaky. She also clipped too far into my toenail and made it bleed. And didn't even apologize! Finally, when I asked to cancel my next appointment, the lady on the phone yelled at me. read more

Dr. Kaufman is a strong professional, knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. Also, her office located in the walking distance from my home. Unfortunately, they use an unusual and rather troubling accounting practice. On the day of service, they charge not a standard co-pay set by my insurer, but some other misteriously calculated amount, which in most cases excceeds that standard co-pay. Later, when it comes to sending me invoice for the service, they tend to forget what they charged already, so the invoice's total amount often turns out to be well above what I expected to pay according to the insurer's statement. Right now, for instance, I am struggling to recover about $100 just for my last visit. I complained to the office's accountant on several occation without much of an effect. Though, once or twice they included the refund in a future invoice. This situation arises practically every time I use these medical services and I am afraid I am not the only their patient to be overcharged this way. read more

The doctors there are good. But watch out for a nurse Maria Bertagnolli who does many services there. I asked her if she could remove a small mold for cosmetic reasons only & a sm wart. She said yes then did (so I thought just that) A few weeks she calls me in the late morning hours says i must come in for a fallow up visit to make sure it heals properly. Well she --did not--- remove it. To this date I am not sure what she did. Both are far worse in appearance and larger!!! Will not go back. read more

I was referred here by another dermatologist who couldn't see me so after a lot of humming and hawing about availability times by scheduler, I finally got an appointment with the doctor I was referred to. Needless to say, my appointment was scheduled at 10:30 am but I wasn't seen until 11 am. Is that standard practice with new patients or just the usual putting us in our places as our time can't be worth as much as theirs? I'd even brought my forms filled out as requested to save time. I also started coughing in that building, maybe because it's old and dusty with long winding ugly corridors. And the multi-floor parking facility -- that you pay for ($4 for about an hour/ hour and half) -- is one of those older ones with narrow ramps, with weird hard turns to navigate. If you're a wheelchair user or can't do steps, I don't know how you even get into this building as it seems inaccessible from the parking lot but maybe there's some other way in to where the elevators are. I'll go back for the follow-up visit but this is not triple-A service. read more

Extremely unprofessional staff and bad customer service is the norm. I have repeatedly been given conflicting directions by different staff members. Dr. Kauffman creates miracles ... she has my deep gratitude. In May 2019, I tripped and smashed the left side of my face into the concrete, shattering my glasses and gushing blood from the deep wound a few millimeters from my left eye. I was rushed to Georgetown Dermatology in Foxhall Square. Dr. Kauffman immediately cleaned my severe lacerations, made sure there was no glass remaining and gave me five stitches. She was gentle and caring throughout the difficult procedure. When I returned a week later to have the stitches removed, Dr. Kauffman mentioned that my skin would heal over time, with almost no visible damage. All thanks to Dr. Kauffman's immediate and specialized medical attention. I absolutely trust her prognosis for highly positive outcomes. That's because after almost three decades of not needing to see a doctor beyond routine checkups, this is the second time in 18 months that I had the same serious accident. Both accidents were virtually mirror-image identical - this time the right side of my face; last time was the left. Last time my deep wound also healed completely, a few weeks after Dr. Kauffman removed the stitches - with no significant scarring. It is almost impossible to believe that miracle workers like Dr. Kauffman still exist. P.S. - her office has great wifi. read more

I usually do not right reviews, but after having a very negative experience with Georgetown Dermatology I felt inclined to share so that others could avoid the hassle. I made an appointment a few weeks ahead of time and gave them all my insurance information. I showed up for my Friday appointment 15 minutes ahead of time and then waited for well over an hour before being shown to an examine room. When the nurse came in I asked her whether it was normal for them to be running an hour late and she told me it would be better to schedule my appointment for earlier in the week when they are running on time. She left and I then waited another 30 minutes before Dr. Kaufman finally showed up (1.5 hours after my scheduled appointment time). I was told I would need a follow up appointment. I tried to make this appointment over the phone. When I called the person who answered was very unhelpful. He took my name and said he would call me back, but he didn't. Instead, I had to call him back. He then told me there were no available appointments for well over a month. This place is VERY disorganized and clearly does not prioritize their patients. I would not recommend it to anyone. read more
