After reading very mixed reviews, I must say that it is absolutely worth the price (approx. $10 difference) to upgrade to the "parlor car" aka. "first class." My parents and I had a lovely, relaxing time. The seats and tables are comfy, (much more so than the long benches in coach looked), and the price includes a "free" drink, salty snack, and sweet snack of your choice. They also serve alcoholic beverages in first class, which added to the enjoyment of the ride as well ;-) While the entire train ride is not one stunning view after the other, there are several points where the views are unrivaled. There's an amazing white water creek below that is crossed many times, as well as a super high point where you can see for miles across the range. Yes, most of the train ride is winding through the forest so you can't see far and wide, but for those who love mountains, it's all still very pretty and enjoyable. If being in the forest doesn't interest you at all, perhaps try the train ride at Disney World. This is a real piece of history that was fought for by the Historical Society, and it was absolutely worth saving so that people in 2016 can get just a tiny glimpse of what life was like over 100 years ago in this amazing state. Lastly, many have complained that this train ride is not a true "loop." Indeed, the train is simply a there-and-back ride, like many other trains in Colorado that had to be built this way due to the narrow, treacherous passes through the mountain ranges. If you listen to the tour guide, (again, I recommend the parlor car because it is far more quiet with less people so you can hear the guide clearly), you will learn that the name comes from the way the train tracks were built, which is all very interesting to history buffs and train nerds like myself! (There are a couple literal loops built into the track that were necessary during construction in the 1800's, which is how the name stuck...) Overall, this is a nice activity for locals and tourists and is reasonably priced for what you get. read more

Great time, especially for kids. You can sit in covered or uncovered cars no reserved seating, which are benches so people pretty much move around throughout the trip. bring a hat and SPF if you want to ride with the top down. Their staff was also very helpful when I was running late and called to push my reservation out. They worked with me over the phone and put me into the next opening no hassles just $4 service charge. I was initially decided on taking the steam engine but ended up on the diesel which I thought was better since you get to pass the steam engine along the way which was neat. Wouldn't have been able to appreciate the steam engine anyhow since you only get to see its back end when your being pulled by it. read more

DO NOT TRUST this business. We had a group of 34 traveling from all over the country and was looking for a family adventure to share. With this many people traveling, we had to make all reservations over the phone. We made an almost $500 deposit with a guarantee of a group rate discount. Once the deposit was made, the railroad promised to call and confirm when the final payment was due. The only call we received was the day prior to the event, when we could not answer, leaving a voice mail simply stating to call the morning of the ride to "sort it out". Once called, customer service was rude and told us they were canceling our ride and taking our deposit. They "graciously" made a "concession" to honor our deposit, but we will have to pay the full rate now or lose our deposit all together. At this point we were 34 people out our deposit or pay more than what was agreed upon after traveling hours. We asked to speak to a manager, which was a man by the name Brian. Upon arrival at the main office we were greeted with hostility and zero sympathy. Brian said they sent out a "contract" in an email, to which none was sent. A copy was only provided in hard copy form, NO PROOF it was electronically sent as stated. The "contract" was dated the day of this conversation and had NOTHING contractually binding on it. When asked for proof of 3 other phone calls the company stated they performed, Brian could not provide any proof. There was nothing more than his word they placed them and no voice mails until the day prior. We produced our phone log from Verizon, Brian did not provide any proof or reason there was no call logged or voice mails. Brian was incredibly rude at the end of our useless conversation with him stating it was his word against his customers. I left, then came back for a copy of the "contract" which he provided. He again stated it was HIS WORD against his customers and continued to cheat his customer (us) off. I apologize for the length of this review but wanted to make sure everyone knows the truth about the customer service from this business as I have now read from previous review. This is NOT about the money, but about warming anyone that may be thinking of taking a ride on the Georgetown Railroad Loop. read more

The food was great (especially for the way they had to prepare it), the people were wonderful and it was a nice ride. Dinner Train Review only! We went for the steak and lobster dinner train last night (October 18th). It was about 30 degrees & windy when we left the station. There are NO BATHROOMS on the train, so GO BEFORE YOU LEAVE! There was a kerosene stove in the back of the car (C) where we were sitting (Table 29). Luckily, we were sitting next to it, because the people in the front of the car said they were cold the entire ride. They would come to the back periodically to get warm next to the stove (and there's not much room). The cars are as such: A,B, Kitchen & C. Servers have to keep opening the door at the front of the car in order to come in and out to serve the food, which is why everyone at the front was cold. I would have expected for $60, they would have either a) asked me how I wanted my steak cooked; or b) cooked it the way it's supposed to be, medium rare. Out of the 3 of us at the table, my husband got a medium rare steak and my friend and I got OVERCOOKED LEATHER PUCKS! My husband was nice enough to trade with me. The PLATES, literally felt as if they had been kept in a CHILLER (like at a salad bar). I don't mean it was just cool, I mean ICE COLD! My friend commented "chilled plates?" Consequently, when you put hot food on an ice cold plate, guess what happens? Yep, cold food, which was potatoes and asparagus. I eat fast and the potatoes were ice cold before I could finish them. The salad was a green leaf with mozzarella balls, raspberry vinaigrette & a roll. Dessert was a molten lava cake and was tasty. However, THEY RAN OUT OF COFFEE b/c they only carried 5 thermoses and cars A & B drank them all before they could get to us in car C. You see, they were banking on people ordering after dinner drinks for $6 each & instead everyone ordered coffee and they did not carry enough. You get a complementary wine with your meal, but they want you to order before and after dinner drinks. They only have about 12 drinks on the menu, plus a few beers and 2 kinds of wine for $5 each. Check in is a 5 p.m. and not before. The train boarded at 5:30, then we left shortly thereafter from Devil's Gate. The train sits on the bridge above the depot to serve dinner. After dinner, the train goes to Silver Plume where there are only TWO PORTACANS. All the people who had been drinking ran to get in line b/c the train is only there for about 30 mins. People were freezing and the men were going behind the building or in the woods. I refrained from drinking so I did not have to endure this madness. Several PEOPLE FELL on the ice on the platform trying to get to and from the portacans. We returned to the station around 8:00 p.m. where there was another mad dash to the bathroom by the women. The track is very short and gives you some decent views before dark, but after dark, you really cannot see much b/c of the glare off the windows. You also are running along side of I-70 which is not terribly scenic. I would NOT recommend going after September, because it's just too cold and gets too dark to see anything. read more

We did the train ride today with the mine tour and gold panning added in. Total time was about three hours which was just about right for our two young children. The train ride was really fun for everyone with great sounds and fantastic sites...and we lucked out as the train wasn't too crowded. The Everett mine tour was ok, too short for the adults and too long for the kids. Gold panning was interesting and our kids loved it along with the hotdog lunch. We would do it again...make sure to get the coupon! read more

The Christmas light train is so awesome. We purchased the presidential car and wow.. I was so impressed. They did everything and you could tell they were trying to do it right. We had a great time - my daughter was in awe of the lights and of course SANTA! He was a really friendly Santa and he sat and talked to her for a little bit, which was honestly more than I was expecting. Also the service in the car was fabulous - they had a decent sized snack plate and gave us free non alcoholic drinks and then served us cake at the end of the ride. I don't know why anyone would leave a bad review- you can tell this establishment is really trying to do a great job. They also have a photographer that takes your picture before the train departs and then hands out pictures at the end- she did a fabulous job and actually got a good picture of all 3 of us. We will make this a family tradition until my daughter is 'too cool' for it I am sure - but hopefully we have a few years before that happens. :) read more

We took the Christmas Train tour in 18. It was overall a fun experience. The grandkids enjoyed the christmas lights on the trip as well as the lights in the village. My only critical thoughts is that the windows steamed up along the way making it difficult to see everything. On a positive note, Santa Claus was everything and more. He sat with the grandkids for more than 5 minutes asking them what they wanted, bellowing out a boisterous Ho, Ho, Ho, and were able to get great pictures. He did this with everyone in our car and it was the last car on the train. His enthusiasm was fantastic. He even joked with adults. He was the highlight for me of the experience. read more

Okay all the gripers in the other reviews....I found the ticket. "Wine Tasting and Hors d'Oeuvres Train" . I researched the hell out of this one to get to the right combo. There are many options (also see Steak and Lobster ride) but this one seemed to have the most bang for the buck...39 bucks to be precise. No crying kids, no goofy cowboy reenactments., no diesel spewing on you, no blaring horns. Just four glasses of wine paired with four appetizers as you cruise through beautiful scenery with loved ones. Buy your tix online well in advance and they will place you at tables (There are only four tops and two tops). About a 45 minute ride from Breckenridge. So for the non-kid bearing adults who want to enjoy a unique evening travelling through nature... enjoy. read more

The train is fun, but not an inexpensive destination. Kiddo turned 11 so I got us tickets for the parlor car. The upgrade is totally worth it - you're inside in case of bad weather and it includes beverage and snacks. Most cars are open air, so if it's cold, wet, or windy, you're out in it. I found a discount on the 10 AM train that left from Silver Plume so we did that. With $7 off per ticket it was still over $80 for 3 of us. You can add a mine tour for an additional charge. The train ride lasts a little over a hour. They give you good information from Silver Plume to Georgetown and then stay mostly quiet from Georgetown to Silver Plume. We were seated at a table by the window so had good views the full trip. From Georgetown to Silver Plume our amazing server also let us stand out on the back of the train car for a while, which was super cool. Kiddo had a great time and got a bag of small gifts (offered for birthdays up to 10, we fibbed and said he turned 10). He wasn't sure what to expect from his first train ride, but enjoyed it all. Signs showed they have special rides for Oktoberfest, Halloween, and Christmas that sounded really cool. read more

Had a Brother n Law and his girlfriend come in from Arizona and we have lived here for 8 years and had never tried this. We had always wanted to but every year we would forget and miss the Fall Season. This time we bought tickets in advance at their online site. The first thing that I was very impressed with was that they waited 10 to 15 minutes for us. I am 8 months pregnant and we had calculated wrong on travel time and didn't add bad traffic into the time it took us to get there. So we were 10 minutes late and thought for sure we had missed the train. Now of course once we raced from the parking lot to the ticket booth, we realized because they pick up at both ends, Georgetown Loop and Silver Plume, that they tend to wait 10 minutes at each stop anyways. But at the time we did not realize that and they told us they were waiting a bit longer because they saw we were one of the two groups they were still missing. It was a bit embarrassing to be the last ones on the train and to be stared at as I was going up the ramp to the train (with the help of my husband) trying to waddle and having a tough time walking because of rushing earlier from the parking lot. But the rest of the passengers had compassionate faces once they saw us and seemed to have more patience in the wait time they experienced. We were very grateful they had waited since my husbands brother has never come to visit us and we really wanted him to have a new and fun experience here in Colorado. There were no covered seats for all 4 of us. So we sat in the sprinkling rain in the uncovered train cars. Now for me being 8 months pregnant and having to rush and huff and puff, I was already blazing hot. So sitting in a bit of rain was refreshing. Even my husband enjoyed it. But our Arizona brother and girlfriend were probably freezing. My husband had the insight to bring an extra waterproof coat and 2 extra hats and gave it to them to use. And use it they did;) All the while I was grinning from ear to ear because it felt so good because I had been so hot. End the end they had a great time and got to cuddle! Cute couple! This is one of those great ideas that could go terribly awry. Some pointers: 1) the train rides sell out, so BUY TICKETS BEFORE YOU GO 2) 30 degrees colder than Denver. We pulled in to the Siler Plume lot and it was 73, then the winds blew in with cold rain and dropped 23(!) degrees. CHECK THE WEATHER and prepare for any conditions 3) Loud(horns) and a little boring(hard for them to see) for the younger children. Personally, I would caravan, park one car in Georgetown and the other at the other station) and take one train leg(the Silver Plume to Georgetown had better sites and was more informative) 4) The woman at the ticket booth in Silver Plume was certifiable. One minute she would tell me they didn't have trains until 12:45, then would admit there were tickets on the 11:15. So if trains are sold out and you must buy at the ticket box, insist that they explore all options 5) Check the weather read more

The train ride with Santa was such a fun experience. At first I thought it was a little expensive but after the experience I think it was worth it. They had free hot chocolate and cookies. You could try roasted chestnuts. The Santa on the train was fantastic. This was the first santa my son didn't freak out about and he even gave him a hug. Train was pretty cool! Good for all ages. We had a seniors group touring from Tennessee with us. We were told the tour was only 90 minutes but it actually ended up being 3 hours with the mine tour. Would have been nice if the reservationists told us the correct time so we could have planned accordingly. After you've been to other mines, all mines look the same- it just was not worth it. Bring a sweatshirt, lots of sunscreen (9000'+ elevation = really HIGH UV index!) & a pair of shades. If you sit in the open train car, you WILL get steam in your eyes! read more

Ok if you have twin four year old boys this is an easy sell. Anything involving trains will go over well. Georgetown is about an hour from Denver, the perfect distance for a nap but not boredom. Upon arrival we were treated to complimentary hot chocolate and cookies and a very nice staff. The train ride itself is an hour and was complete with Santa and elves. We also got some great family pix from the "their" photographer that went from car to car. My only disappointment was that we couldn't get out in Silver Plume (they close it in the Winter). Christmas train-presidential class It's a cute short trip aimed for kids. Drinks are $6 and are basically all versions of the same thing (schnapps, bailey, proseco) For me, there was too much packed into a short trip. I wish there was less photo taking, service, and santa and more enjoying the lights with Christmas music. Presidential class gets you a shiny ticket but outside of that it's really nothing special. All in all it's okay for kids, but honestly you could drive down a street with lots of lights with a mug of hot cocoa and Christmas music on and get the same experience. read more

If you like steam trains and beautiful scenery, you'll like this experience. We did. We also took the mine tour, which was fun and informative. The kids enjoyed panning for gold (which is included). We rode the parlor car, which is enclosed and keeps away the occasional bit of engine exhaust (my wife's preference, not mine!). We were served some nice snacks and drinks as a result, and had plenty of attention from the server and conductor. We will be back. Made reservations and purchased tickets in advance. They mention the strict protocols to help keep everyone safe. You go to the ticket counter and pick up tickets that they never use or check so you could technically ride for free and save yourself about $20 per person. They take your photo before you get on the train and interrupt your ride to try and sell you the photo while you are still enjoying the scenery. They have all open trains and require masks. All patrons did okay in boarding and keeping their distance. Once on board they "stagger" you from the people next to you but it causes you to be close to the people across from you. You could not hear the factors or details they said in the beginning of the ride and after the refuel of water. They have staff walking up and down the train the entire ride so you assume it's to before masks or physical distancing. It's not. Most of the passengers removed their masks. The ride itself was mediocre. You have the same scenery from I-70. They have some tacky props placed and takes away from expectation of the scenery. Yes you cross a bridge over some water a few times and then they stop to refuel with water and take you back the exact same way you came so it's more of an out and back path vs a "loop" in my opinion. The tracks go right along the interstate so don't expect any new views. You can bring food and drinks on the train but I don't recommend as it's only an hour. Once the ride wrapped up about an hour, everyone packed off the train like customers do on an airplane. Again defeating the physical distancing in the first place. I recommend just driving down the highway with your windows down and you will have a better experience. The waiting area for the train is not ideal for how many reservations they accept so it crowds by the ticket/gift shop. This was an underwhelming experience. read more

The Husband and I decided to take advantage of the Fall color and our free tickets from the History Colorado Museum and ride the Georgetown Loop train. Everything about the ride was great although the husband wanted a steam engine instead of the diesel engine. Because this is a new owner, they are working on getting the cars and engines back in shape so there is a hodge podge of cars to ride. There was a first class car serving cocktails and snacks which looked fun but I think one of their dinner rides or tasting rides might be more fun. And with new owners come new adventures, they are offering all kinds of rides to suit everyone's desire. Pumpkin ride, fall color ride, dinners, moonlight, and Santa. We also did the Lebanon Silver Mine tour and enjoyed the tour of an old mining camp and the mine. The extended tour adds 500 more feet to the walking tour and it is a part of the mine not seen since the late 1800s. We did have an over chatty tour guide but he was very knowledgeable and probably appealed to the younger set. This is a highly rated activity for being so close to Denver. read more

We came up in the evening to catch the Christmas lights ride we were greeting by friendly staff members, and even some warm cookies and hot chocolate. Looking for something to do one weekend we decided to try out this little adventure. I have this App I downloaded on my phone called Visit Denver, and they have lists of tons of things to do.... and it suggested this to me as family adventure. We went on Dec 30th, and at first we were going to come at 5:30pm and see the lights,but then a friend reminded me of the ski traffic coming back to Denver on Sunday evenings. so we decided to leave super early Sunday morning and take our chances with the 10:00 AM train ( we didn't reserve, but crossed our fingers). It was SUPER, DUPER, cold that morning and we got there around 9:20... leaving Thornton around 8:20-- so not too bad of a ride. No snow and the roads where clear. The do not open until 9:30 and so we stayed in the car until then, and then went inside to line up to purchase tickets. They had some free hot choco waiting for you after you purchased your tickets, and we needed it. I bought 3 adult and 1 child tickets, and for first class ( parlor) car. It was about $35 per person for adults... total price about $126.00 . The different between parlor was you sit at a table, vs the other which were benches with not tables. It was cold, and as we were the first train, it was exceptionally cold. We sat by the stove, but during the ride our toes remained frozen :).. but that was really the only negative part, as they don't control the weather. Wasn't too packed and there were a few open seats in our car. The views were pretty cool, and we had a nice time. We were there for the last day of the season. We were on the Holiday Cheer ( I think) train, and Santa was there asking kids if they got what they wanted to for Christmas. I would like to come back, stay in the town ( Georgetown is very cute) and take either a dinner trip or a beer tasting one. They even have one where you can do the mining tour in the better weather time :) read more

Do NOT buy tickets on their website as you WILL be charged for duplicate orders. Their system is not working properly so be sure to only get tickets at the ticket booth. My order was duplicated. They said they would reverse that charge and they did not. I'm having to dispute it with my bank to get it reversed. Oh, and it's really only worth about $12, not $22. Short ride along I-70. The one thing you should know is that the steam engine doesn't usually run during the week - just on weekends and holidays. For the short 4-mile trip, this matters. The mine tour is nice, but without the steamer, this trip feels more like an amusement park ride and less like a page out of history. Bring a camera - the loop really is great. The track is well-maintained and the museum in Silver Plume is nice. The day was fun, but it was short on magic... and steam. read more

This is definitely something that is fun to do once in your life, but if you have kids - they might get more of a kick out of it too. The rail is a loop that goes up the mountain to about 9,000 feet, with some breathtaking views of the Colorado Rockies. The prices are reasonable with coach seats starting at $25 and parlor seats going about to about $35. The staff was friendly too. Here are my issues with experience. If you are going to offer snacks and drinks, at least try to do something other than vending machine options. It was a cold day and I would enjoyed something hot on the rail as opposed to a cold green tea. Also, its not hard to just serve some hot cookies or brownies either. If you are going to provide snacks, at least put a little effort in. Also, due to the movement of the train, you constantly have to hold your drinks and snacks. A simple holder or stop on the table is only you need to solve this issue. I am not opposed to going back with a group but I definitely would not go out of my way for it. read more

I had wanted to go on this for some time, and once I saw the alcohol trains I was sold. My husband and I chose the wine and cheese train on a Saturday evening. First, it is true that there really isn't much of a view while the train is in motion; it's either I-70 or, on the opposite side of the train it's looking up a steep incline of dirt/trees. There are some nice views when the train stops, if you can try to ignore the interstate. I was seated RIGHT next to the trash can. I mean, if I had leaned back in my chair or tried to scoot it back I would have been up against it. So I wasn't thrilled about that. And the trash can is used constantly, as every passenger is given 5 plastic cups (one for each pour of wine, plus one for water) and every single cup is thrown away (they do NOT recycle anything). Even if you buy a full pour of the same wine you just drank, they still throw away your original cup and give you yet ANOTHER cup for the full pour. So much waste. Which takes me to the wine: very, very tiny pours--so small that it was extremely difficult to even really get to taste all the characteristics you're supposed to notice/look for. Once the first glass was served, I asked "Is this the size of all the pours?" to which the server replied, "The samples? Yes; you can buy a glass for $6." (though they were actually $7). If that is how it's presented once you're on board, I really feel the website should have been much more specific and say they are merely 1 oz. (? guessing here) "samples". It doesn't mention anything about buying extra wine, etc. And you kind of have to unless you want to be limited to just water for the whole trip, as each wine sample takes 2 sips to finish. The train itself goes very slow--a snail's pace. So by the time we reached the halfway point I was ready to use the restroom. My husband and I got up immediately once the train stopped, and we stood at the exit door and waited for the ramp to be lowered so we could step off. At that point one of the workers told us to wait, at which point she proceeded to let EVERYONE in the other train car go ahead of us. Why? I have no idea. One would think that the logical, polite thing to do is to let some passengers from one car go, then some from the other car. No--she was going to let an entire train car of people go completely ahead of the other (and there aren't too many stalls in the restrooms). It's only because one gentleman from the car who got let out motioned for me to go ahead. Overall I was quite disappointed with this experience. If I would not have been by the trash can, if they actually recycled, if they gave you more reasonable pours of wine (let's say half a glass of each, totaling 2 glasses for the 2 hours trip), and if the attendant would have handled the deboarding for the restroom stop in a more professional manner, I would have given it a better review. My granddaughter and I spent a lovely day riding the train from Silver Plume to the Everett Mine, to Georgetown and back. You have your choice of train cars with sun or no sun. The train carries you through a beautiful gorge, complete with creek, rapids, trestle bridge, and forest. The mine adventure is an add on which I am glad we chose to do. My son and I were in Denver for the day and decided to take a little road trip. Our Uber driver recommended Georgetown so on we went! Cute little town and so we decided to go onto the railroad. Worth the extra few bucks to travel "first class" - the staff couldn't have been nicer and the included snacks were much appreciated. We went on the shorter mine tour and really enjoyed it - wear a sweater! It was cold down there! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and personable. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We both thought it was well worth the couple of hours we spent on the train and in the mine. BTW - he's 24 and I'm 52 and we had a great time. Wish we had seen Bigfoot lol read more

When making the reservation the elder lady was extremely rude. She over charged us and started to yell at us as if it were our fault. When asked a question she acted as though we were bothering her. The train ride was really nice and scenic. Everyone seem to enjoy themselves and Santa came out to greet all of the guest. The staff on board were extremely polite. We were given a snack and drink with the option to purchase beer or wine on the train ride. A gentleman came around to take each family a picture which was 2 for $20. We booked the train ride in late August using a Deal Chicken coupon. We boarded the diesel engine train. We sat in a covered car, but we were able to see and take photos without any problem. Almost every seat was taken. We would like to go on the train again during a different time of year like for the fall colors or moonlight ride. read more

This is a very fun and relatively safe activity for anyone of any age, especially kids. We were in town for a family reunion and everyone really liked this activity for its wonderful views, interesting historical information, and corny jokes. If you're in town with kids, take them to the Georgetown park/playground. It's one of the best I've ever been to! read more
