Showed up expecting a saccharine environment where gold was last mined 80 + years ago and the equipment resting against the walls was just for show. Boy was I wrong, and so happy to be wrong. This is a legit operating goldmine, where real pickaxes swing everyday and real gold is extracted from the many thick veins shown to you on the tour. The guide was also one of the several miners who run the place and his willingness to be patient and share the history of the mine and industry made this one of the most enjoyable tours I've ever been on. And I've been some weird places. The guide let my kids swing the pickaxe and keep the nuggets they loosed from the wall, he ran most of the equipment and explained their history, and you could tell he respected his craft. Very interesting. II picked this tour because I was bringing my 87 year old Dad and there were no steps. You walk into the mine and it almost seems unreal that you are inside the mountain. We all liked the tour. I have been to other mines but this was different. I think because it is an active mine and they show you how they find the gold and silver. Plus they let my son and father use a pic axe to break the stone. Other mines I have been in show us how they got the rock out of the mine and then milled it. We knew we wanted to do a mine tour, and there are several in the area (have a house in Silverthorne). We were heading to Georgetown for the day so we decided to head over to the Capital Prize Gold Mine Tours. I'm SO glad we chose this tour! You drive in and it looks like this little rinky dink operation: 1 house/office and a bunch of old equipment strewn around. But wow! First impressions can be wrong! We were the only 2 there and it was the last tour of the day. Our tour guide Paul was knowledgeable and gave a great tour. The tour ultimately takes you back 1000 feet into the mine. Paul gave demonstrations on some of the equipment and explained a lot about the mining operation. The "mother lode" is only 3200 feet into the mine but we couldn't go back that far obviously. There's a lot of mining left to do in this mountain! Once you get back to the 1000ft mark, you can actually mine for gold, silver, copper....! You're allowed to carry one stone out of the mine. You rinse it, break it with a hammer and see your prize. I was so lucky and my rock has gold in it! I posted a pic here. Tip if you go: pick up the heavy rock - even if it's small. I debated because the rock I had was small (maybe 3" long) but it was heavy. So glad I didn't throw it back! lol read more

Tucked away on a dirt road in Georgetown, the mine can be a little hard to find (trust the GPS!). You'll know you're there when you see the yellow buildings. Our guide was waiting outside and promptly ushered us into the aforementioned yellow building for a quick discussion and whisked us into the mine. There are hardhats inside for everyone to wear (they are adjusted by a twisty knob on the back). Previous reviews mentioned flashlights but we did not use nor need them for our tour. We learned a lot of history. We got to see the veins and the extraction process. We even got to do a little mining ourselves. I don't want to spoil the tour! This is the first mine I've been to. It is massive according to the map, but the tour doesn't go wildly far. Did I feel claustrophobic? No. Are some areas uncomfortable for tall people? Briefly. Did the tour guide know and answer every question? Yes! This is a locally-owned business and a piece of American history. It gave us perspective into a lifestyle quite removed from ours, and a feel for the old west. Check it out! read more

This felt like a very authentic experience. The only thing that would have made it more authentic is if you could dig a bit in the mine and then take that to the panning area. The tour was quite good with interesting stories and filled with historical perspective. The people who work there were very kind and pleasant. Really cool mine tour! My husband and I drove over to Georgetown to take the Georgetown Loop railroad tour and added this mine tour based on the reviews. When we pulled up the place is a bit sketchy, not kidding. However we were quickly greeted by Daniella and she was so welcoming and friendly. Our tour started promptly, right at the scheduled time. We were fitted with hard hats and off we went into the dark granite tunnels. Greg took us into the mine and gave a thorough tour. We walked back about a thousand feet when all was said and done. I don't want to give too much detail as not knowing is part of the fun but I will give a few tips. 1. The tunnels are very dark, they ask you if you want to carry a flashlight, do it. 2. It's a very flat surface but is a little wet and muddy, wear appropriate shoes. Tennis shoes are fine. 3. The tunnels are 50 degrees year round, it's very cool and I recommend taking a sweater or light coat. 4. Some of the tunnels are smaller and more confined in areas, if you are claustrophobic this is probably a nightmare for you 5. Use a restroom prior to visiting, they only have an outhouse available I hope this helps! read more

I took my kids (5 and 8) on the gold mine tour and it did not disappoint. This is a working mine, and the tours fund the owners work to further mine it. The kids really enjoyed picking out souvenirs from the rubble, and my 5 year old even helped use a pick to chip minerals from the mine walls. Both kids also got a chance to push the old mine cart too. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about mining and the history of mining in the area, and the duration of 1 hour was just perfect for small kids. This was really a great experience, and also a good excuse to visit Georgetown, which was a really nice place to eat some lunch and ice cream, and stroll for a bit after the tour. read more

My wife and I visited Capital Prize Mine on October 25, 2021. Our tour guide was Greg. He was awesome -- he knew everything about the mine's history and operation. Just let him know what you want to try, and he'll let you. Good sense of humor too. The mine is pretty cool -- a long straight shaft with side tunnels, with rails, antique pipes, antique and modern mining tools. There must be a bug there, because while on the tour, I could feel myself catching gold fever. read more

As complete tourists in the area, had the opportunity to take two different tours in the general area, the other was a disappointment, but this tour exceeded our every expectation by a great deal. At the conclusion of the tour, my wife and I agreed that it was the best guided tour we had experienced in our travels around the US. Arriving a bit early, the owner spent considerable time chatting with us about general information regarding the area, expressed genuine interest in our previous travels (including mine and mine related tours we had taken in the past) and educated us on the differences between mining in Colorado as opposed to California where we now live. they have a small amount of equipment and relics around the mine you can wander through before or after your tour, and the collection of chipmunks that eat from your hand are a bonus. The tour guide was fantastic, very knowledgeable and interested in providing us information that was relevant to our interests. We all have been on tours where the guide had a script ( say something funny and wait for chuckle here...) but this guide and this tour was the antithesis of that type of tour. He explained, informed, (a bit of entertaining but not staged) and made us feel completely welcome and appreciated. Since this is still a working mine, (albeit small scale) you were able to learn about the history of mining in that specific mine and then learn how they are continuing to mine the claim to this day. We arrived about 30 minutes early for our tour and were pleasantly greeted by the owners son who told us about the history of town and the mine and hung out with us until our tour guide arrive a little bit later. Paul was our tour guide he was friendly and talkative and gave us lots of information throughout the tour and we had a good time with him. It was really fun walking 1000 feet into the mountain and seeing the different veins of gold and silver and other rare earth minerals that are present in the tunnel. It was interesting to hear about the different techniques they use for mining some of which was new to us especially because I have been quite interested in mining over the last few years thanks to gold rush TV show and my interest in history. It was cool that we got to take a piece of ore from the floor of our choice and bring it out of the mine with us then wash it off and break it open and look and see what was inside of it and get the staffs help on identifying what kind of rock we have and what was in the middle after we broke it open. We met the owner at after our tour he was a nice guy and shared some things about the mind that we had not previously heard as well. We got to hear the air driven trail in the mind which was incredibly loud even though it happened for about two seconds and was a cool part of the experience. We've been on a few mine tours and this one was the most hands-on and it was also interesting to note that this mine was never abandoned and is been run continually over 100 years unlike most of mines which at some point are abandoned and the original equipment disappears. Also liked the fact this is a family run operation and we felt treated like family by the people there. If you're looking for mine tour in Georgetown then this is the place to go. read more
