Having remodeled a couple kitchens in the past, she requested that I visit to give her assurance that the work would be performed properly. I was immediately impressed with the well branded professional looking service vehicles and Scott and assistant Brandon's professional work attire. Face masks were worn showing concern for everyone's safety during these Covid19 times. It didn't take long for Murphy to strike. Once the old cabinets were removed, it was discovered that the previous poor installation had scabbed mix and match wallcoverings and shims with poor cabinetry support. Even the original wall studding wasn't on proper 16' centers. What was needed for proper installation of the new cabinetry was the removal of all old substandard patch-work wall coverings and replacement with 1/2" drywall. Numerous other electrical outlets required relocation or placement due to the remodel, so now was the perfect time to strip the walls and replace 7 sheets of drywall. Scott asked if I would care to do that and he would return later, or that he and Brandon would be able to perform that task. We chose to have Scott place the drywall to expedite the completion of the job. After watching Scott and Brandon's work ethic and carpentry skills, I shortly realized that I wasn't need as an overseer. It was very obvious that they took great pride in their work and didn't rush through it like I've seen so many other contractors do in the past. They are used to work hand in hand like real team players and it is obvious that the boss is taking good care of his workers. The project got done in a few days only and in very good quality. I contacted them several times through our Yelp messaging over the next couple of days, stating safety concerns and not being able to use the fireplace until we spoke with them, contacted them through their website form, and also left two courteous voicemail messages for their office letting them know we had safety concerns and asked for assistance. I had zero response to all of my efforts. I emailed and let them know I would be filing a complaint with the BBB and still received no response. I hired another company to come clean the fireplace and not only did he clean out a massive amount of soot and creosote left behind, he was stunned to find that the prior serviceman left his plastic brush and pole stuck up in the chimney. He gave it to me and I identified it as the brush the 1st Choice serviceman was using, as it was distinctive and particularly flimsy, which I noticed at the beginning of the clean. Things happen and if he had explained that his pole broke off and that he would have to come back with tools to get it out and finish cleaning, we could have moved forward. The basis for liability under negligence stems from an individual's failures to behave with the level of care that someone of ordinary prudence would have exercised under the same circumstances. He knowingly put our home and our personal safety at risk with a smoke and fire hazard, and that is egregious. It took months to settle our claim with our credit card company and get our money back. I've had time to consider my review and to post the facts without heightened emotion. Not cleaning the fireplace well and not returning calls for assistance is enough for a bad review but purposeful negligence is grounds for not being allowed to do business in this industry. The business office of this company has no excuse for failure to respond.
