Went in to find some gifts for two dear "nephews" (children of a very close friend who refer to me as their "aunt") and was pleasantly surprised by the vast array of choices. I was looking for First Communion and Conformation gifts and found the perfect ones. Everyone was very helpful in leading me in the right direction. I would highly recommend visiting them. read more

Gerkens is the place for Catholic and Christian art, books, and other supplies for churches. There is no one that does it better than this family company. They are warm, sincere, prompt, and responsive; regardless if you're buying a single candle, or ordering for a large parish. The staff here will treat you like family, they want to do all that they can to give you a very customer centered feel. I could not be more pleased. In the event that you have an issue with an item, they will happily take it back and make it right on behalf of the manufacturer. Who does that anymore? Another reviewer gave them a single star because their lack of a good website, but to me Gerkens has always been a brick and mortar store, through and through. Shop with confidence. read more

Whenever I need a religious (Catholic) gift, this place is always at the top of my list! I've been very pleased with their selection for sacrament gifts, artwork, rosaries, holy cards, bibles/devotional books, etc. I usually end up spending more time looking around than I had even planned to! What a great family owned shop. I just wish they were closer to my house (I drive from Loveland, so I try to swing by when I am in the Denver area!) read more

I love this store and have shopped there for years but I have to say their website is awful. Trying to find items on their website, that I know they carry, can be difficult or impossible depending on the item you are seeking. You can search for one thing, such as a Roman Missal, and end up viewing clergy apparel. In fact I have searched for this item in Church supplies and in books and cannot find it. read more

History

Established in 1953.

Gerken's was started over 65 years ago by founder, Elmer Gerken. Elmer moved from Omaha, Nebraska to Denver, Colorado with his wife Bonnie, and four young children in 1953 to pursue his recent purchase of a small religious supply company. "The store" and Elmer's strong relationships in the Denver area grew over the years, and so did Elmer and Bonnie's family. They had a total of 11 children and the Gerken family currently has a total of 172 members. Two of Elmer's sons, Ray and Mike, are the current owners of Gerken's Religious Supplies and are committed to the same high quality customer service which Elmer founded the company upon.

That said, my husband and I did stop by the Youngfield store a couple days ago, and although we didn't encounter "Mr Mask" (and mask or not, the attitude was the problem) the lady at the register was also very "car-lot sales-y", listing off all the things on sale, the readings going on that day, etc. While some might find that helpful, we found it rather off-putting, as we had come in for a specific purpose, not a 3-minute sales pitch. There is nothing wrong with welcoming customers in and saying, "If you need any help just let us know." (Ashley at the 44th Ave location got this right, every time!) But the pushy attitude we've repeatedly encountered makes us reluctant to shop here.
