The photographer is the person inside the gallery. He is very friendly and explained to us all of the photos that were interesting to us. The gallery is filled with beautiful scenes of local scenery. My wife was drawn to his photos of pelicans, her favorite bird. She is a mosaic artist and done several works featuring pelicans. She found the perfect photo, printed on wood (which is an unusual process), that featured many pelicans on a sand bar. We placed it in a perfect place on hallway wall in our house, right under one of her pelican mosaics. We enjoy looking at it every time we pass it. This gallery is right next to Paula's Pancake House, which always has a long wait for a table for brunch. So, while waiting to be seated at the restaurant do take a look inside the gallery. That's how we came to find ourselves in the gallery and finding the perfect photo. We didn't think that when we entered, the perfect photo awaited us inside. One of the rudest photographers out there , couldn't even give me the time to talk about his own work and walk away every time I tried to start a conversation or asked a simple question with him , told me he was too busy with only 1 person in the shop and proceeded to sit down and look at his brown desk in oblivion. Highly recommend to everyone to NOT COME HERE. This guy needs to close up his shop and learn some people skill!! To the town of Solvang this guy is giving you a bad reputation. read more

We happened upon Philip Gerlach's beautiful artwork many years ago (15+ years?!), while visiting in the Solvang area and have returned a number of times to his shop. We love his photographs and have purchased multiple pictures from him (of varying sizes) which hang in our home and they have bought us great joy. We have even had a family-member buy us a picture for a special occasion gift. At all times, the artist has been beyond gracious and helpful with all of us and we feel his prices are very reasonable. We had a good experience at this art shop. Beautiful photo prints on paper, wood, magnets, cards, etc... I took something off the wall to look at and I could not get it back in its spot. I was grateful the owner was very kind about it. Anyhow, I purchased a few little things. The prices are good for what you're getting, in my opinion. It was somewhere I'd go back to in the future- right next to put breakfast place (Paula's) and also mole hole. read more

I cant say enough good things about my experience with this gallery or its owner! My teen was interested in stopping in here as we waited for my son and husband to catch up with us. Honestly, the photos are gorgeous. So much color and life! We took our time looking around and by the time the rest of the family joined us, we were pretty set on buying something. The photographer spoke with us quite a bit on the stories behind the photos we were eyeing (amazing stories) and offered to even make prints on the spot if we didn't see a size we liked! Just wonderful service. I wish I could have purchased more prints but we just didn't have the space so we stuck with the two we loved first and, of course, I had to get a greeting card which are also made from his photos. So glad we came by and maybe when we make it around next time we'll be able to stop in again. (Side note, the pricing is great for the quality of photos you're getting. We happened upon this photography gallery while strolling around Solvang. We're not usually into photography but ended up buying some of his prints on wood. Great shots of places we love on the Central coast and more. Since we were taking a short little trip to Solvang, one of our shots was of Solvang. He explained to us how to get to the exact place where the photograph was taken so we could see it ourselves later in the day. The photographer was also very friendly and approachable, and answered all our questions without us feeling too pressured to buy something. As we left, he made a couple recommendations of Christmas things to check out and to bundle up for what looked like a very chilly Solvang evening (he was correct). read more

As locals, we were so pleased to purchase Gerlach's breathtaking vineyard landscape. We wanted to bring the beauty of the Santa Ynez Valley vineyards into our home. It was our hope to find a landscape that would seem like we are looking through a window. Our hopes were realized with this gorgeous canvas. Gerlach was so accommodating and encouraged us that the 40'x60' would look great on our blank wall. We are so happy with the fact that the canvas does not require an expensive frame. This is the perfect place to buy landscape or nature photography! The photos were stunning, the photographer was so nice and at the store, he gave us the whole background to the photos we loved. He was great with our whole family. I came with my parents, siblings and toddler son, he was really sweet to everyone. We bought quite a few prints as I thought they were very fairly priced. On a recent trip back from Pismo Beach, I decided to stop in Solvang and then here. This guy must be used to being the only photographer/gallery in town because he sure acted like an asshole. While he was blowing smoke out about only knowing you should own a gallery if "you were called from it at a young age", i looked at his prints in store. All the photos were grainy, not crisp at all. He's definitely charging canvas pricing and not printing on actual canvas. Its kind of sad, he goes to great spots to take his photos, but none are crisp, focused, or printed on quality material. Wouldn't go back and definitly wouldn't spend money on any of his prints. There are better galleries in Solvang by actually talented artist. read more

Took a little family trip up to Solvang and stopped in here. Phillip is a great guy who spoke with us for some time about all kinds of things. We bought a beautiful photograph which he gave us the back story of how he took it and where. He wrote a few notes on the back letting us know where it was as well as a message to our family. Been to Solvang twice in the last year visiting friends and discovered this gallery while waiting for breakfast at Paula's. Both times that I came in, Mr. Gerlach was everything that is kind. Interesting photography covering a wide variety of scenery. A lot of the photographs were local, and others in cool places like Bryce Canyon. I like that a lot of the photographs are canvas wrapped, as that is the current trend. Owner was friendly and talkative. Definitely worth a stop. read more

On vacation and stumbled on this gallery. Nice work but was very disappointed when I tried talking to the owner. I am an award winning photographer, which I did not tell him and made a reference to only having my phone with me and he immediately said not to show him any of my photos. I had no intention of doing so and was very offended by his tone and his arrogance.
