I am…read morestunned how this place is allowed to function with this level of negligence in the heart of Brookline, which is where I live. The staff is untrained, rude and unprofessional, the rooms are not kept clean and most of all there was no one to oversee or to administer the place. These untrained staff who seem overworked run the entire place. The only people who did a decent job were the PT folks, and it is obvious that they do their job despite the very unstructured and confused environment. An anecdote: The first day I went to visit my husband a staff woman was by the front door (seems waiting to be picked up) and since it was a snowy day and with bad leg, I needed to use the handrails to go up the steep stairs. I asked her politely if she could move from the rail. She called me names and screamed at me. Shaken by this encounter, when I got buzzed in at the front door, I asked the front desk woman to let me know the name of this woman at door, as I would like to file a complaint'. After, describing the incident, the front desk woman deliberately took her time to come around her desk towards the door. By then the woman who was watching through the glass door jumped into the car that was picking her up and left. I asked the front desk woman, 'do you know her and I believe she works here.' She pretended she did not. It was obvious to me that she was not telling the truth. That was the first day experience in that place. My husband stayed more than a month there. It was a nighmare experience, but we had no choices then as we could not get another facility soon enough. Almost everyday, walking down the corridors you hear loud and consistent screams from patients. It is like a house of horrors. The roommate was also screaming continuoously and the staff sits and just talk to themselves. I asked to see a doctor or nurse (anybody in charge) and they kept saying they'll come. I had three appointments and no one showed up. When asked, they say we have no control as to when they come, or they come and spend an hour and leave. Finally, one said they don't come at all. He never saw a doctor or a nurse, the entire time. Eventually we left. I plan to do a followup on this place to the town of Brookline. It is disgraceful to have a place like this operate anywhere, let along in this town. It deals callously with vulnerable elderly population. Someone who knows the place, said the place is like a homeless shelter or a flop house. That is unaccepable for any organization. No matter what. do not put your loved one into this place. It is uncaring with some mean spirited workers in there.

When I brought blatant problems to the executive team's attention, I was listened to and then nothing changed. Staff members seemed to prefer doing laundry or hanging out with each other to being with the residents. I also found staff chatting on their cell phones and ignoring the resident's needs. When I directly requested help for my spouse I was told that they would get to it later, or I was treated in a rude and surly manner and my request was grudgingly granted. Buyer beware! What is advertised and what is given are vastly different. Do your homework before sending a person who cannot advocate for him/herself to a place where they are treated as a source of income, not as a needy human being who deserves compassionate, kind and thoughtful care.

Jenny scented in Jimmy Choo perfume at $150 a bottle, but still needs training in customer service, listening skills and most importantly mindfulness. Had this awful habit of picking something up and putting it down and then forgetting where it was and spent 30 minutes of my time, looking for something things that she put down because she wasn't paying attention. Then out of frustration questioned me on why I needed this item. I found her to be wasteful. Some of the other ladies were respectful and delightful. I just can't think of their names at this moment. And then of course my favorite. KIARA! OMG, what a GEM! Always willing to do whatever I asked. Genuinely happy to come back. We formed a real kinship. She is a registered nurse and I believe The higher education made the difference in this scenario. Through her training to become a nurse she taught me a little tips and tricks that I can use for myself, things that I will treasure forever. FIRSTLIGHT, gives the impression that they'd like to be better than the competitors, and I do believe that they are and that their effort to unite the caregivers with an online training is wise. The one constant here are the residence, they are well educated, and demand the best of the best and when they are ignored, many meetings happen and corporate gets involved. If corporate could replace Ronaldo and Colbert from the kitchen, they could only do better. IMO they are dead weight that holds this place down when it comes to the food . Our residence is demanding a Mediterranean diet, less unbox and heat foods. Alyia, head of entertainment, I find her effort 90%. If she could just try a little harder. Decorations are always appreciated, but content is what pulls off a successful event, and in this department she doesn't see the benefits. The nursing staff is awesome! The one constant that I think is major and they never get correct, is new move ins. The staff always seems to be scrambling, and the first few nights as a new resident not the best. Eventually everything's works it's self out, but I do wish the staff would try harder here as well. It's not just one thing, but they should have maintenance make the unit " Move in Ready", RCA's ready to go for new people etc.

Although there are some caring…read moreindividuals here who really do their jobs(they were wonderful and would alert us about nurses who would mistreat my father), there are more that simply do not care. We placed my father here last August (2015) and he has Parkinson's Disease and gets confused easily and I believe that some of the bad nurses used that to their advantage when he would report that they were abusing him. When I say abuse, I mean that they would not bathe him for weeks at a time, leave him in the same diaper all day long, sit him in his wheel chair all day long, yell at him, or leave him in the hall way when he would have mobility issues. Even when we would complain there would be retaliation from the staff against him. Your loved ones are better off somewhere else than here. Golden Living Chestnut Hill (despite the location) is a depressing, sad, and dirty place. If you care about your family member then please care about putting them in a better place, we seriously regret placing our father here.

This is a long review but hope that it will provide some balanced info as you consider your…read moreoptions. Our loved one was a long-time resident of Goddard House (GH). They entered as an alert and mobile resident. GH promises "you can age in place" but our loved one was forced out as they required more care in spite of the fact that fellow residents were wheel chair restricted and required all sorts of care. Our family was willing to provide 24/7 private care but still we were told we had to leave. GH is a non-profit with volunteer board that is supposed to oversee the organization. There are no terms of office for these trustees; they serve year after year, including the board chair who hired a for-profit management company, SLR which brought tensions. SLR yanked long-standing, resident-focused policies such as financial rent assistance if family paid in full for three years. Policy is gone. However, the board chair requested the admission of at least one resident with full financial assistance at the outset because this person was a friend of hers. There were four changes of Executive Director in the time we were there and at least as much as head chef in the kitchen and head of resident care/nursing. I do not believe there is an R.N. on staff. The facility is outdated. Several bathroom resident falls occurred due to outdated bathroom design. Apartment bathrooms are being updated now as residents vacate but it does not help families whose loved ones fell. Additionally, carpets on 2nd and 3rd floors are original to construction! Yet, the board sits on a hefty quasi-endowment and does nothing. Lastly, the organization was slow to respond to a gastrointestinal virus that initiated in their kitchen and spread throughout the community. Goddard is terrific for a resident who is independent, mobile and requires little care. Brookline is a great location because of its proximity to academic medicine, but if your loved one requires additional care as they age, you may need to leave GH or you might be one of the fortunate ones to be allowed to stay.
