We stayed in Columbus for a day, and Schmidt's in German Village was our first stop. Took 30 min walk around the area after the lunch, it's very unique, I believe it add great value to the history of the area. Besides excellent German restaurant, there are some cute little shops you can stop by, too.

One of Columbus' must stops... German Village is a walk back in time of old Bavaria... Village restaurants, coffee shops, row homes, unique architecture, and brick streets, its uniqueness sets it apart from other areas of Columbus. Schmidt's Sausage Haus is a must stop (some of, if not the best and most authentic German food you'll find in the Midwest), and there are several other restaurants all within walking distance in Germany Village. Add in Schiller Park and Columbus Brewing Company right up the road in the Brewery District, German Village really does have it all. The only drawback is the liberal lunacy (that will churn your stomach) lives and frequents German Village, but aside from that, it's arguably Columbus' coolest area.

As I left my hotel for a small walk this morning, I ended up spending three hours in German Village. The cobblestone streets, the brick houses, the architecture and history of this area are breathtaking. The beautiful stores, the incredible food and the ambience just walking through the village is absolutely priceless. I highly recommend this to anybody visiting Columbus. I feel this is a beautiful section of town and deserves to be visited.

Such a pretty neighborhood to be in. It has books and thrift stores and candles and jewelry and BRICK ROAD FLOORING. i'd so live here. AND IT HAS A STUART LITTLE DOOR. peak place.

The sad part is that I have had bad experiences with the people of German village. They seem to be a little self centered and rude. I'm sure it's not all but most of the ones I came in contact with they were. Really wanted to enjoy the holiday festivities but it was hard with all the rudeness going in. The prices were average. Services were average.

The German Village in Columbus Ohio was first settled in the 1880's. This neighborhood reflects that era in respect to the narrow brick and cobblestone streets and sidewalks, ivy covered walkways, coal chutes and small but well maintained homes and flower gardens, The neighborhood was put on the historical register in 1974. It is quaint and somewhat ethnically German. You can start your exploration of the neighborhood at the German Village Meeting Haus where you will find maps, etc. in this welcome center. After leaving the welcome center their are a number of locations you might want to visit. The Book Loft is an older home covered into a 32 room book store. Each room is designated to a distinct topic. Schiller Park is named for the celebrated German author and is a 32 acre recreational center set in a residential section of the neighbor. Be sure to listen to St. Mary's bells on the hour. Places to eat are numerous and diverse. Schmidt's Sausage House is on the National Register and a local favorite. They also have a fudge store. Pistacia Vera has excellent pastries while Lindey's is a fine upscale restaurant. If you just want to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate during the holiday season, Stauf's is a good bet. They have a wonderful Expresso Chocolate Cake. Parking and driving in the German Village is challenging. Public transportation exists to the neighborhood. There are paid parking areas, as well as, street parking. except for certain times of the year like Christmas and festivals, you should be able to find free street parking.

Charming cobblestone roads& homes, lots of German restaurants & brewery's. The brick homes weren't colorful but felt European.

Ask the Community - German Village

I will be visiting this weekend and do not want to get an Uber from my Airbnb because it's in Blacklick. I would rather get an Uber from an area closer to places I am going. Is there decent parking in/around German Village?

Hi Justine! There is street or lot parking for almost all of our businesses, restaurants & shops. We also have parking for our Visitor's Center located at 588 S 3rd St. However, you may want to consult street signage before leaving your car parked… Read more

It's only one hour long and, if you have the right guide, it is very much worth it. Our guide was outstanding. There is a lot of history here, and trivia and entertainment, too. But you won't feel like you're taking a history class unless you just come and stare at the exhibits. Well worth a visit but especially if you can take the tour.

In some states upon returning from the war soldiers pushed to have rounded domes placed on top of their state houses. It was not the case in Ohio, and the original Greek revival architecture remains. The building is a showpiece and focal point at the center of the capital city. It has been restored to its original grandeur and is carefully maintained to ensure historical accuracy. The grounds are well manicured and contain a variety of historic themed statues. There is an active and thriving bee apairy located on the north side of the grounds. Beneath Capitol Square, and the statehouse there is a multilevel parking facility. Be aware that the maximum height of your vehicle may be too tall for this garage. There are warning indicators at the entrances, but pay attention to the height nonetheless. Security is of Paramount concern, as this is a working capital for the statewide officeholders, including the governor, and both houses of the general assembly, Senate and House of Representatives. It is not just a museum, or a ceremonial building. This is the actual working seat of government for the state of Ohio. it is necessary for all visitors to be screened by security prior to entrance. And an active and robust security presence is maintained by the Ohio Highway Patrol. Throughout the halls can be found portraits of governors and legislative leaders, statutory representing the history of Ohio as well as large paintings of historic events in the rotunda. Of important historic note, after his assassination, the Ohio Statehouse was a location where President Lincoln lay in state and for days tens of thousands of Ohio's paid their respects. Lincoln spoke here on occasion, and actually received official word that he had been elected president, while visiting here. A brass marker is placed at the location where he spoke to the public in the atrium between the main Statehouse building and the Senate building. The Ststehouse Atrium has not always been here, but some years earlier was an open outdoor area. As is their habit, pigeons had taken up residence at the upper regions of the building and it was necessary sometimes to run between the Statehouse and the Senate building so as not to be "christened" by pigeon waste. The area became known as "pigeon run." If you look above the door/entry entryway to the Senate building in the atrium, you will see a historic reminder of those days in the form of a taxidermy pigeon. Those days are of course, long gone, and the atrium is now home to a variety of public and private events. Many select the statehouse and grounds as a location for wedding photo shoots, and actual weddings. Schedules of House and Senate sessions, and committee sessions are available online and open to the public. In the basement of the atrium and Senate building there are a variety of historic interpretational displays. Also found there is a small café, and a gift shop.
