Walked in here during Village of Lights. Lots of people were browsing although I saw people here and there making a purchase. They've got rooms upstairs and downstairs of crafts made by seniors. Very cool! They had some really cute OSU stuff, Christmas things, handmade scarves, artwork, home decor, etc. Loved it! Not sure what their regular hours are but I enjoyed walking through here. The stuff is all reasonably priced, so I wouldn't mind coming back to buy something. read more

This is a shop that sells handmade items made by seniors. It is directly across the street from the book loft located in an old church. I always stop here when I am in German Village. If I am honest most of the merchandise isn't my thing but each time I am there the products are a little different. If I have a baby shower or something coming up Ill stop and peak what they have. This place was the hidden gem of our trip..we didn't realize it was a shop at first!!! It's like a craft show only in a permanent location and all done by seniors..such a cute concept. Everything from OSU gear to holiday decorations, jewelry, aprons, paintings, wood working....so much more. We loved it. And everything was super reasonably priced, I was very impressed with that as it was a non-profit. And the women working there were super nice. It was just so cool and obviously their stock changes regularly so we will have to go back in another season and check it out. I bought a cute hand painted wine glass, a decorated gift bag, and these adorable glass penguin earrings! My friend got a cute Ohio State pin for her boss. read more

This is a non-profit cosignment shop with crafts made by seniors. It is in an ancient elementary school on South 3rd Street across from the Bookloft . Beware, if you touch anything a nun comes and smacks you on the hands with a ruler, and will give you a even harder blow if you do it left handed as that is the sign of the devil!( I kid, I kid, but not about the left-hand thing as that is obviously true.) The business helps seniors in several ways, so it has a five-star purpose. The crafts are your usual grandma-grandpa items, plus some arts. The main room has various knitted materials, blankets and quilts, especially sports themes, Ohio State being 2/3rds the selection. There some Van Goghish watercolor 8x10s scenes of Columbus, photographs, and other well made stuff. Upstairs is supposed to be, according to a sign, an all season Christmas room, but I didn't see any Yuletide items there. Though a few chalk shadows caught my interest. It is a good walk through and place to buy gifts; sometimes you'll find impressive items, but in the least everything there is cute and personally crafted. It is also a nice walk through for those that love old architecture, as the 19-century school has been well maintained. Just don't peeve the nuns! read more

This was my first trip up to German Village and I was told that this was something I had to visit. They have lots of cool things here as you can see in my pictures. Lots of things that are antiques and some things that are just plain cool. The layout of the building also really contributes to the unique experience of shopping here. The prices are fair for what they have. Not overly cheap but fair. If you're visiting German Village this is a must visit whether you buy anything or not. read more

Respect your elders and hit up the Golden Hobby Shop. All of the merchandise is handcrafted by Granny or Gramps. The volunteer workers are so friendly and appreciative of your business. I found an adorable snowman wreath here and some clever small gifts. It's closed for January, but reopens in February. read more

Super adorable place you must visit while at the German Village. This is a consignment store that contains all kinds of crafts made by the senior citizens in the area. The store is HUGE and has a dedicated room for all types of crafts including children toys, jewelry, quilts, pet accessories, and my more items. Stopped in for a look on a Tuesday afternoon. Picked up a few seasonal jewelry items at a very reasonable price ( a pin and earrings for under $6.00 total). Only downside was that it was so warm inside we were in a hurry to leave. We only lasted about 10 minutes in the heat. Would come back for another look around in cooler weather. read more

I have visited this place on and off for years. I tend to make my own gifts but have been overwhelmed with other projects this year so I decided to visit. I found several items that have been sitting on my Pinterest boards for a couple years. The price that was marked for several items, I couldn't make myself for much less. The quality of the wood items and knitted items was excellent. I'm heading back to Columbus today and plan on stopping and picking up a couple more items. Golden Hobby Shop is a non profit organization supported by Columbus Parks and Recreation. I have been attending craft shows for many years and this is amazing. It is open all year long, supports our seniors, crafts change each season/holiday and there is no admittance fee. The majority of workers are volunteers and they are fun, friendly and helpful. I also sell my crafts there and the commission for a consultant is only $30/year. They are located in the Performing Arts Center on Franklin Avenue. There is free parking across the street. read more

If you want homemade and handmade and local made and reasonable cost shop, stop by the Golden Hobby. I admit it I first came here for the free parking and just wanted to stop in before I went to the bookshop across the street, I stayed for over an hour and spent more than $100 for 13 items. I am a unique collector of wooden motion toys and there were plenty there. Also picked up some cards for the graduation/birthday I was in town for. I am a member of the shop and already making a profit (after membership annual fee of $40). I wish their sign outside was higher as it is hard to notice driving by and I wish they had internet service to order things. They don't have as much traffic as we would like. There has been an improvement in the design of the way items are shown and they are constantly working on making it better. Only so much one can do with an old school but every nook and cranny are used for display purposes. Nice they have their own parking lot. For those who don't know, the place is part of Parks & Recreation and provides an outlet for seniors (over 50) to sell their crafts. Crafters may leave their creations for one year. read more

Don't be fooled, if you're looking for a place that has supplies for making a model car, this is not the place. They get phone calls from people asking if it is. No, actually it's a place where all the crafts that are sold are made by senior citizens. Considering everything is handmade, the prices are decent. Goods consist of some typical arts and crafts seen at festivals, but everything is well made. Not so common merchandise includes afghans, quilts, photography and paintings. I saw some very nice quilts that were more like a piece of art that you hang on the wall. Jewelry may not be uncommon, but what you'll find is pretty and unique because of the handmade touch. There are things for kids, adults and pets. Pet crafts included Hello Kitty pillow beds. Children may like the woodcraft room with the doll furniture, dollhouse, rocking horses and choo choo train. This February the Golden Hobby Shop is hosting an American Doll party, for those who are doll collectors. A cool woodcraft that I saw were bowls that at first glance look like fancy carved wood, but at a closer look are actually sliced walnut shells. read more

I walked into the 3rd Street school converted into senior hobby shop this morning looking for a quilt. A woman at the desk gave me a fifteen minute speech about how the all of the products are made by people 'on the better side of 50". She also apologized for the small stock of items this week since they were not sure if they were going to be open and didn't take in many items. I didn't notice. I peaked into one of the four rooms while she was speaking and based on the selection in the summer themed room, I expected to see a banner entitled 'Made by Grandma for Grandma." That said I poked around the buckeye themed room for quite some time and enjoyed the knit items along the back wall, a fun selection of hats and scarves. The jewelry was mostly beads strung in a variety of combinations, but nothing to spectacular. Upstairs in the Grandpa room I found some cool hand made fishing rods and across the hall in the doll house had fun eyeing the wall of doll cribs. I left with a chocolate cake scented soil candle for only 8 bucks. A good find. This is the average price for most small items, although there a few large quilts selling for $300, which is a good price for the handiwork and detail. This is a fun place to pop into on a Saturday if you are in the village, but don't expect hidden treasures. read more

Lot's of craft items that are actually useful but also plenty of knick knacks. Lots of American doll clothes and furniture at a fraction of the cost as well as tons of Buckeye jewlery and gift items. Great place to find a functional and fun hat or scarf as well as crochet dish clothes which are BIG in my household. They have a room with seasonal items so if you are looking for items to decorate for an upcoming holiday they have a nice selection. It's also in a neat building so definetly worth a stop. read more

What a horrible place! The acting lady in charge at the center had my car towed while I was in the process of making a purchase. I was the only patron in the building and all she was concerned about was watching the parking lot. She called the towing company then came in and told me that if I had parked there my car was being towed. The tow truck driver was reasonable and lowered my car when he found out I was in the building. Pissy little woman in charge. Stay away. read more

So glad we finally got to hit this place when it was open. We always seem to be in GV on Sundays when it's closed. The nice woman at reception asked if we'd been in before and we said no. She told us what each room had in them and to feel free to browse. We went right into the double room and oh my goodness...I kind of wanted to cry. I have a grandma battling dementia, it kind of felt like being at her house 20 years ago. I haven't seen many styles of items they carry in years but in a good way. Remember those dishtowels with the crocheted tops that button onto the stove handle? They've got 'em...in abundance. Remember back in the day when so and so got pregnant and grandma got right on crocheting the baby blanket? Lots of good ones to choose from if you don't know anyone who crochets anymore but still want one as well as afghans and those type of old school things getting harder to find. But it's NOT all old school stuff! Lots of paintings, cards and buckeye things for fans. If you need a cute baby shower gift, they have some really awesome "diaper cake" type items! Diaper shapes like a baby carriage, a hot air balloon, a butterfly, a teddy bear and so reasonably priced. It made me wish I knew someone who was having a baby! They have a seasonal room and it was filled to the brim with Easter stuff from mats to wreaths to ceramics. It's definitely worth a stop and they say the inventory is always changing so I know we'll be back! read more

Been visiting this store for over 20 years. Interesting old building, friendly staff, fair prices. Good location if you like German Village and its charming homes. Small parking lot, sometimes need to park on street but I don't mind. Not particularly into crafts but in this store, I almost always find a unique item that I just have to take home. read more

Brent R., you should be aware that you MAY park in the Golden Hobby Shop parking lot, there are a few of exemptions: 1 - there are several areas, large signs, that are designated as Handicap areas; don't park there if you don't have a handicap sign. 2 - on the south edge of the parking area there are large signs designated for VOLUNTEER PARKING ONLY, if you don't have a VOLUNTEER PARKING PERMIT on the dash of your vehicle....DON"T park there. 3- there are a few special occasions at the GOLDEN HOBBY SHOP...the annual 18 inch doll show, the German Village Yard Sales, etc.. In those conditions you will see large yellow/orange barrels at the entrance areas and they have sign that state NO PARKING. And there is usually a person in that area to let you "no parking this day" or if you have paid to attend the event (18 in. doll show) then you can park here and he/she will let you know where to park. So, yes you can park here and yes you can go anywhere and you won't be towed if: you follow the notified rules. read more
