Kim's Hardware is a classic mom & pop hardware that keeps the neighborhood running. The majority of my neighbors shop at Kim's Hardware for obvious reasons. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help however they can. They actually pick up their phone so you can call in advance to confirm they have what you need. Anytime I need something for a home repair I instantly think of Kim's Hardware. They have the majority of what you need for basic repairs. They also have a large selection of luggage (big and small). They even offer window screen repair services. I needed to get my screens replaced for a few years and I finally visited Kim's Hardware and they were able to make the repairs in a few days. They also made sure the screen color remained the approved HOA color. My screen repair was reasonably priced. read more

I discovered this family owned, neighborhood gem in 2020 when I decided to tackle several long overdue home improvement projects. My list included interior and exterior paint and new fixtures the for kitchen cabinets and bath. I also needed several pieces of glass cut for 3 large tables. I've been frequenting Kim's for years (and not just because my first name is Kimberly. A few times I went in because they were close. Then I realized how personable and knowledgeable they are. They've helped me on many projects and emergencies over the years. They ask detailed questions about a project and walk you to the best product. In one emergency I had they showed me something but said I would need a professional and their product would only be useful short term. Before you buy anything they will ask questions to be sure you're getting what you need. Their prices are as good or maybe better than big box stores. Part II of the closet hanger pole ... the ends were bare, and anything that would hang then falls off! So back to Kim's for end caps ... which are hard to find but the team improvised and recommended plastic leg tips for stools, but they're rubber and can flex a bit. For the want of 1/4", they worked!!! read more

If you are sick of the time and cost of going to some big box store with poor service by employees lacking knowledge, Kim's is your alternative! When my companion moved to Edgewater, she needed an extra shelf installed in her closet so the manager (Mr. Kim the younger?) suggested a couple of solutions to fasten it to her drywall. The first anchors could not take but expanding butterfly anchors finally did! The consulting and advice was many times the value of the regular priced components. Pictures below. I was reminded of them today when she needed a new battery for an appliance remote and the team at Kim's helped her open the unit, find the battery, and located a right sized replacement. But what really impressed her was that they were nice to her dog! :) A quick walk to Kim's Hardware can really make your day! read more

Everyone is So Helpful, so patient. So kind--I have been embarrassed to ask so many basic questions but everyone has been patiently helpful.

I asked them for a shower diverter and explained (using gestures and examples) that I needed the two outflows to have variable flow. An employee recommended a $17 diverter. The product, which *they* had suggested, did not work at all for me what I had asked. It was for a completely different shower setup. They refused to accept the defective product in its original packaging with receipt. This is despite the fact that their own employee (a muscular Asian male) had recommended that I purchase this diverter after I clearly and explicitly explained what I was looking for. I feel that they ripped me off. They sold me the wrong product, waited for me to install it at home, and then refused to take it back after I discovered the product was not what I had asked them for. I will never shop here again, and I will discourage my friends and family from shopping there. read more

I love this hardware store, it's staff, it's family everything about it. Their prices for items are always fair and reasonable. Yeah, some stuff might be a little cheaper elsewhere, but when you add up the time you save by not having to walk down mile long aisles, believe me, you're not really saving money. This place is awesome. First, they have the thickest "Chicago accent" I've ever heard. U walk in, they immediately help u. The BIG MUSCLE GUY, can answer your questions before u ask. (Yes he's hot!) but, the costumer service is excellent. They close a little early for me, but I will wait til my day off, to go there! (I'm a bartender). If I could give them more stars, I would. We recently moved to Rogers Park and have been frequenting Clark/Devon Hardware. My wife saw Kim's Hardware to get a hard to find key. Ran over and was met by very friendly staff who are outgoing. A muscular and ironic man helped me with the keys which he guaranteed would work. They have a non sku cash register and price stickers. I went home happy until I took a wrong measurement and came back to get it trimmed. They did it free. This is our new hardware store. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for 11 years and cannot sing the praises of Kim's Hardware enough. Countless times the good people there have helped me find the tool/part I needed, encouraged me to fix things myself, or helpd me to save money. I once broke off a key in my back gate lock and took it to the store to purchase a tool to remove the key fragment. I was told to "come back in 15 minutes". When I returned, they had removed the key for me and refused to take any payment in return. This family owned business is one of the true gems of Edgewater! read more

I love Kim's Hardware. It's a few blocks from my apartment and I was delighted to find out this week that they do small repairs which I had previously taken to Devon/Clark Hardware. No knock on Devon/Clark but...the guys at Kim's Hardware are super nice people, and very helpful I have never been upsold or pressured to spend more there, not once. I mentioned that when I went there today and they started laughing, kind of ruefully admitted that if anything, they down-sell. I trust these guys. I brought a lamp that needed some repairs, it's not an antique expense lamp or anything but I like it. The guy I talked with was very kind, talked me through in detail what they would do for my under $40, probably even less lamp repair, even pointing out he would have to change the color of one tiny part that's not even noticeable under the lampshade. It is also funny that so many Yelpers comment on the muscular guy who works there. I've been a long-time member at Edgewater Athletic Club. We had an interesting conversation when I took some keys to be copied there and he saw I was an Edgewater Athletic Club member. read more

This is not Clark and Devon Hardware. It is not meant to be--to say that Kim's and Clark and Devon are alternates really only applies in the sense that they both carry some of the same things. What Kim's is is Korean-style retail with a hardware focus. When I say Korean style, I mean that you can assume the prices are reasonable. They're not trying to roll die and get you to purchase something that gets them a high profit margin, like the bargain section at Barnes and Noble. They also don't mince words. If they have something for sale that's not as good as something else that they have for sale, they'll tell you. Their focus is on the way it feels to shop there as a customer. If you buy Gizmo A, and Gizmo B and C also happen to be required in order to make Gizmo A work, you can rest assured that they either carry Gizmo B and C at a reasonable price, or that they will get it for you. In that sense, they run their store almost like an ACE hardware, except that they do all the corporate headache stuff on their own. You don't need to focus on finding Gizmo A-C that all have the packaging that looks the same. Just tell them what you need, or mozy around the aisles and grab the tip of the iceberg, and the rest of your home improvement project will fall into place as you immerse yourself in the store and walk around like a six year old child. It's that easy. They will exchange, but not refund. And it works -- you're going to need something else from them anyway once you go on in. This is a place you return to. read more

Highly recommend this place for your hardware needs! Absolute neighborhood gem! Deserve 10 stars! I needed to buy some bunji cords quickly to secure a new basket (crate) on the back of my bike. I called first to ask about if they have bunjis, and if they would allow me to remain outdoors for the purchase, due to covid and my discomfort being indoors. They were so respectful and courteous toward me (different than the other hardware store, who dismissively told me I would "just have to come in"), and answered "yes" to both my questions. They asked about what size of bunjis, and offered solutions and really seemed to care on the phone call. When I got there, the bag was ready and a nice guy came out and handed it to me, and helped me put the bunjis on the crate and took time to offer to get another one in a better length, etc. The best customer service! After the bunjis, I asked whether they had Christmas lights, and bath mats, and they did and I also purchased a bath mat. I went to Kim's today for the first time. My husband had been and said they were very friendly and helpful, yet my good expectations were far exceeded. I had a nearby errand and just to get a screw for a broken chest pull. The gentleman who helped me (Kim?) could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable about what I needed. When I have gone in to Home Depot for a screw, they usually have to measure it and then search through all the bins. Mr Kim knew exactly what the screw was for, was able to tell the size quickly just with a glance and knew exactly where to get it. And all this great customer service was just for an 11 cent sale! The next time I need anything, and I hope it's a much larger purchase, I'll be back at Kim's for it. read more

I ordered a chair online, and unfortunately the proper screws were not included. I went to Mr. Kim's hardware with the diagram, hoping for a miracle. A very nice hardware store clerk named Jimmy helped me. I gave him the diagram and he gathered the screws and washers I needed. Jimmy was even kind enough to label each set and place each of these screws in tiny ziplock bags. He made me feel more hopeful that I would assemble the chair. Okay so I have a little social anxiety so going into local shops makes me a bit nervous - you know, they always try and talk to you. At Kim's hardware they find the perfect balance of respecting your space AND being helpful. They gave me time to browse on my own but stepped in when they knew I was having a hard time finding what I was looking for ( I have never been big on my hardware knowledge). Respectful, humorous, and helpful, the crew here at Kim's Hardware are the ideal customer service. Got everything I needed within 5 minutes of talking to one of the men there. Also everything is super reasonably priced. Happy that I live in this area - I will definitely be going there again, and so should you! Stopped in to buy some small items for home. Easily found them, which was awesome. I get to the counter to check out and the cashier at the moment greeted me and was kinda fake nice. I also felt rushed out after purchasing my items. I guess he had other things to do, he is running a business. My friend who I was with suggested going there since he lives close by. He said he try's not to spend a lot of time at checkout because of the rush off. If you just want to run and and run out -this place is for you. Just recently moved into Edgewater, and found this as the closest hardware store in my area. I've been here around 4 times in the past couple of weeks and I've received wonderful service. The place looks small from the outside, but it's actually pretty huge and stocked up once how enter. The staff are very helpful. The first time I went in was to make copies of my keys, unfortunately the first time one of the keys didn't work, but when I returned to get it fixed, they were very nice and got it done quickly. The last time I went to figure out a solution for my AC problem, and I got the perfect advice and materials to fix it up, and now it works smoothly. When I moved here into my first apartment on my own, I didn't know much on anything. So this store is like a rite of passage from leaving dumdumville and learning now to do things myself when I didn't have anyone to depend on. Now all these years later, this has become my favorite hardware store!! You get an equal mix of: product education first hand knowledge of items in the store building/repairing things the comedy hour (they are comedians--missed their calling they did)!! From toilet seats to screws & hammers they have it all. I found stuff that I needed TODAY that even home depot said they would have to order!! And you can ask anything and you'll get an answer---with comedy smiles or with a straight face. I never knew anything about plexiglass (other than what you've seen in liquor stores) and I learned a LOT about it today. I've bought gloves & socks from there too. They have a little bit of everything for everyone. Yes bigger stores will have a lot more, but they are a miracle on broadway for us that sometimes can't get to Lowes, Menards or Home Depot. And the prices are NOT bad. Not bad at all. They cut keys of all kinds, even have small appliances. I can't recommend any one particular person because THEY ALL ROCK THE STORE!!
