The check-in and security process is usually pretty straightforward, and I love that you can get from the parking area to the terminal without feeling like you're walking miles. The airport is clean, well-maintained, and has a relaxed atmosphere that makes traveling a little less stressful. There are also several food and drink options available if you have time before your flight, and the staff I've interacted with have generally been friendly and helpful. As someone who travels frequently, I really appreciate having a smaller airport where I can avoid the long lines, endless walking, and craziness that often comes with larger airports. It may not have all the bells and whistles of a major international hub, but for convenience and ease, HIA definitely gets the job done.

I recently had a layover at DCA when traveling from Phoenix to Toronto on American Airlines. I enjoyed the layover and found the airport, its staff, and the airline lounges all to be very convenient and helpful. I learned on this visit though that locals and frequent flyers typically call it "National" or "DCA" while out-of-town visitors call it "Reagan." I used all three interchangeably so I'm not sure what that means for me. The clubs and lounges in DCA Airport are much better than usual and there are more of them than usual. I have two travel premium credit cards: the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard offering complimentary Admirals Club access (including the locations near gates C24 and in concourses B and E) and the American Express Platinum card offering other lounge access (including the Centurion Lounge near the B gates and the Delta Sky Club near B15 if I was flying Delta). Other lounges include the United Club near B11 and the Capital One Landing in the main connector area. The Admirals Club near the E gates was incredible and a newly reimagined lounge. My AMEX Platinum also provides travel credits along with complimentary CLEAR and Global Entry membership. There is also the USO Center in Terminal 1. The DCA airport's website (https://www.flyreagan.com) shows ways to enhance your trip or even how to make the most of your summer with a summer travel guide. There are 87 shops and restaurants in the airport with new ones always being added. If you're going to be parking at DCA often, sign up for their PassPark Rewards program (https://parking.flyreagan.com/passpark-rewards). Airport amenities in addition to airport lounges include charging stations, free WiFI, a concierge, baggage carts, and interfaith chapel, kids play space, nursing rooms, pet relief areas, and more. It really does feel that the airport staff put a lot of intentional effort into making sure everyone feels welcome and that there's something at the airport for everyone. I certainly won't mind a layover at DCA in the future!

Leaving, I thought the bag check process was quick. I pre-paid for my bag on American and it was just a quick tag and id check before bag drop. The TSA pre-check line had a few people, but moved quickly. There are lots of great and healthy food options throughout the terminals. There's also ample space to sit and charge your devices. My only star deduction is how terrible getting there via car can be if you hit it at the wrong time as well as how bad the vehicle traffic can get, especially on Friday afternoons. To avoid this, I took the metro home, which is super convenient and inexpensive from DCA.

The shuttle was a fun experience. The vehicles looked like from action movie. In the main terminal, baggage claim area was huge. Our luggages were sitting in the carousel by the time we arrived. For ground transportation, the airport has separated out Uber pick ups, parking lots, buses and rental car shuttles. It was convenient. We didn't see a whole lot of traffic. The rental car lots are about 5 minutes bus ride away.

During peak times, like summertime, its challenging to move in this airport- plus transport, such as the train is challenging. The trains are usually filled to the rim-- so you just have to squeeze in. For a family, just squeezing in is challenging, especially if you have a stroller or a carrier. Plus, this airport is warm, due to all the people. Lastly, lines for food and drinks are extremely long, but there are a lot of concession stands. As for on time departure...good luck!

Compare this to a 3+ hour drive from Reston, VA to Altoona! When we arrived, there was one other plane on the tarmac. As I deplaned, my nostrils were greeted with the pungent odor of manure! This little airport is amidst Pennsylvania Farm Country! When you walk into the terminal, you are immediately at Baggage Claim. There is only one Baggage Claim carousel. They did not bother to turn it on. They walked my suitcase from the plane into the terminal. There is a small gift shop - but it was closed when we arrived. Upstairs there is also a small restaurant - which did not appear to be open when we arrived (about 6:15 pm). Unlike the previous reviewer - Lisa D. - I had decent cell coverage on AT&T. I had at least 3 bars inside the terminal.

Regional airports can be tough in that flights from there are usually so much pricier than from…read morebigger airports (like Philly or Pittsburgh). However, when you think about the cost of gas, parking, and all the other stuff that goes into a trip, State College will almost always win on flights. It's easy to uber there and the lots almost always have space. TSA is extremely fast. You also basically don't have to be there until like an hour before your flight, which is a huge time saver. My one wish is that they had some kind of coffee counter post-security (although the place pre-security it great)! Flights get delayed especially with the air traffic control situation in the US, and it would be nice to have something other than vending for food.

They are open until 7pm most weekdays, so if you want service...make sure you get here before 7pm. We arrived at 6:45 and a staff member with a golf kart met us (after calling them on the radio), showed us to our parking spot, pushed the plane back AND tied it down for us while getting our luggage to the gate. It was incredible. The FBO staff were super helpful in giving me the number to a few mechanics (spark plugs needed cleaning) on the field and even offered us some water. Parking is $15/day, but they were incredibly sweet to waive our fees for the entire 3 days with a top off. Usually they only waive one day with a 20 gallon purchase, but they were super nice to us! Getting to DC from this airport isn't too bad. You can take a Lyft/Uber directly to DC for about $40-45 (about a 35minute ride) or take a bus/taxi/Uber to the train station ($~10-15 for the taxi) and then take the train into DC($5). All in all, until I get the FRZ requirements out of the way to fly into College Park, I'll be sure to return to Montgomery if going to DC. They provided amazing service. There is also a diner right at the airport with has decent lunch and you can watch the planes taking off as you eat. Seems like a lot of locals go there.

He always mentioned he wanted to get his flying license one day, so it was a good gift. I'm so rad. It was cold as a witch's teat and the winds were high. Our instructor was super affable and knowledgeable too. I had my camera ready and was set to snap pictures from the ground when the instructor asked me if I'd like to fly along. I was scared, to be honest, since Welshie was manning the plane, but the instructor has full control as well. It was a stomach-dropping, squeal-inducing, 20-minute flight and it was quite freeing. I did think I was going to die, though. Our instructor even said that the winds were so bad that he was going to cancel the rest of his lessons. Nice. Overall, it's a great little airpark and learning to fly is awesome. It's not cheap if you want to get your license--you're probably looking at about $10K when it's all said and done. I highly recommend trying it out at least once, though.
