I've been trying for days to cancel my service. My current bill is over $670. I've been on Budget billing for quite sometime and my bill keeps increasing even though nothing has changed. I've been with this company for over 12 years and they decided to start treating me like an utter imbecile. It's literally impossible to get a hold of anyone. The automated message asks if you would like a call back to press 1, however NOTHING happens if you press 1, so you are forced to be on hold infinitely. I just want to cancel this terrible service. The fact that they are treating a VERY loyal customer this way is ridiculous. I wish I could give zero stars. Just go out of business already since it appears as if you only have one employee left to handle your customer service. Update: customer service responded to this review 2.5 days later. Just goes to show the level of service there. You'll be on hold for 2 days. I'm now forced to pay $1800 to close my account. Keep in mind my "budget" billing was at $566! We moved to Texas from Indiana about 7 months ago. In Indiana you have no say in who your energy company is. There is one provider and that is it you either live in a district with Center Point Energy or REMC. When we found out we had to choose from like 57 different plans we researched several different energy companies in our area and went with Gexa. (we later found out EVERYONE here uses Magic Valley because of their transparency and good customer relations history) Gexa offered several plans AND they claim to use renewable energy which is important to us. They also clearly stated in the plan description we could switch plans within 60 Days with no penalty. From the Gexa Website: "Happiness Guarantee" "Here's how it works: If you're not happy with your new Gexa Energy residential plan, just call us within 60 days of your service activation date, change to another available Gexa Energy plan, and we'll waive the early cancellation fee on your first plan. It's that easy.* *Applies one time only for new Gexa Energy residential customers. Your contract term will restart with your second plan. Offer subject to change or withdrawal prior to customer acceptance." My husband moved down first to start his new employment and was the only one living in the home for the first two months...henceforth he signed up for a lower usage plan with the understanding we would be there within the 60 days and we could switch at that time. When my son and I moved down we attempted to change our plan from the 1,000-2,000 KWH @.08 usage to receive the $100 bill credit to the 2,000-2,500 @.08 KWH usage plan to receive the $100 bill credit as we expected to use more energy. When we contacted customer service to make the change, we were told there were no available plans for us to switch to...however you can still sign up as a new customer with the 2,000-2,500 usage plan... So in other words they out right lied about easily switching to a new plan within the first 60 days if the one you selected wasn't right for your family/household consumption. Our contract (thankfully) is for one year. The early termination fee is $150. We considered just taking a termination of services and paying the $150 then decided to see if we could use less than the 2,000 KWH and get our credit of $100/month and avoid paying the $.13 (5 cents higher than staying between the 1,000-2,000 threshold). We did this for the first two months. It was hotter than hell and we ran the air conditioner and pool pump continually. The next month, after it had started cooling down, using less AC and switching the pool pump to just running during the day, we were somehow over the 2,000 KWH threshold...not only that...somehow our projected use was in the 1,500's about 2 days before billing and our actual use jumped to 2050...just enough for us to not be eligible for our bill credit o the billing date. Suspicious...just slightly...by slightly I mean what kind of shady S**t is going on with this company? We just got our bill today (February 14, 2022). As per usual...the actual usage was about 500 KWH more than the projected rate we received on February 11th. (which we have the text and email proof.) When we contacted customer service (we hadn't before now but we were thoroughly fed up at this point) we were told that if we thought the meter was wrong we could contact TDU to run a scan...but they would charge us...They also told us the projection is just an estimate...we get that...we know the definition of "estimate" and "projection"...(Please Gexa don't treat us like idiots) However when the projection is 500 KWH less than the actual bill 2 days apart...on a regular basis...that doesn't add up... To my understanding...the projected amount is usually part of an analytic method which SHOULD if applied correctly adjust the energy projection as it recognizes the difference between projected and actual consumption from month to month. So based on our experience with Gexa we rate it very low for 1. Unethical Business Practices A. lying about the 60 Days B. "unavailability" of any other plans) Poor Customer Service--the solution from them is A. pass the torch to TDU and get a test at our cost... Terrible company! They used to be good, but changed in 2021. The rates are now sky high and you have to threaten them with a complaint to the Utility Commission to receive a real bill, not an e-invoice. They also moved up the payment date from the end of the month to the 9th of the month. I missed that this month and they changed me a 5% late fee. I seriously thought about not paying it, but decided that I never, ever want to have anything to do with them again as I have changed providers. Do yourself a HUGE favor. Pick a different company! I read STEVEN R's review below. You are exactly correct Steven. Here's my story! It's called "Tier Pricing" and you will get screwed! Gexa has seriously gotten very greedy in the last 2 years. What they did and how they sneaked the fees in was brilliant. They charge you for using 500 kWh a certain rate, then they add another charge for using between 1000-2000 kWh, then again another charge for using 500 kWh @ another rate. Those are 3 separate charges on your bill, and then after you're screwed for over $200 plus in charges, they kiss you with a $100 credit each month. That's before they charge you what Center Point Energy charges, which is normally between $48-$78. I looked up my old bills from 2016 and they looked very simple. They figured how to screw the customer legally. Apparently they can charge you however they want. The more complicated they make your bill look, the more they will charge you. Horrible website. One can never log in to pay their bill. I've tried numerous times, and only get the circle going around stating they're loading my bill. Also, my plan has a $50 credit for kwh between 500 and 1000. But, they don't give you the credit unless you catch it, and call their customer service line. The rep was nice and cordial, so kudos to him. I called two other times, and their computer voice asked if I'd be willing to take a survey after the call. I had been with Gexa for many years and over time my rates had climbed to an insane amount. When my contract was coming for renewal I tried to speak to sales agent to discuss my plans and there was a huge difference between rates for existing customers and new customers. I asked why can't I get a low rate because I had been a customer for over 10 years and they replied that I could leave and come back..... so I left never to return... I am not sure why my current electricity bill is charged 5 times higher than my past bills even though I have been using electricity the same way. I didnot even have single Christmas lights on for the holidays. This is horrible and absolutely not fair for electricity consumers. The worst company to go with. You call any customer service and say to cancel the service , one of them will say that service will be cancelled. But if you ask for confirmation number , they say no confirmation number. Next day again called, they said, its not cancelled, and they raise another request without any ticket no or confirmation number. Like that i have to follow up for 6 business days, literally it was disconnected on the third day but i got information on 12th day of the disconnection. Gexa has been doing some suspicious activity on my account. In our household there's only three adults who are constantly gone due to work and school. Out of the blue I receive a $300 bill for usage of 1683Kwh when there's only animals throughout the entire day. Who's running the electric bill this high? My dogs? Please, give me a break! I've checked their website periodically to keep an eye on my consumption and it just doesn't add up. The highest it has been before was last January. Of course, during the winter months it went as high as 1282Kwk. Now, fast forward to September and you tell ME it's going to be at 1683Kwh when there's no one at home and there is neither A/C nor heater running? Now, yesterday November 18th I noticed that according to the website I had an estimate consumption of 840Kwh for the end of the upcoming cycle. I reviewed it to the end of the day again and unexplainably it went down to 835Kwh. How is that possible? I called them twice and none of them could explain it to me. They referred me to another website to monitor real time but it still didn't add up. Is it possible that this company is hiding the actual reading in order to stick us up with a surprise bill? THIS IS PURE and UNADULTERATED DISHONESTY. My rate gives me a bonus discount if I spend between 1000-1500Kwh so why play the customer for a fool. I'm not ashamed to say that I love saving money. And, I'm not above doing a bit of legwork in order to find the best deal. But, as I've gotten older, I've also been more interested in doing the "green" thing, also. Here's the rundown on my "okay" rapport with Gexa: Pros: - Cheap fixed rates. Locked in a rate of 12.2 cents per Kwh for a one-year period at renewal for a 100% wind plan. No hassle, no pressure to reduce it from the prior "polluting" plan's 15.9 cents per Kwh. A 23.27% reduction and completely green. - You can choose between "regular" generated power, a 25% wind-generated one, and a 100% wind one. - Continental miles for each dollar spent (1-for-1 ratio). Not rich enough to seal the deal by itself but might as well get that icing on your lower electric bill cake. - You can have your payment either automatically drafted from your checking or put on a credit card. Earn some miles/points on the card on dollars you were spending anyway. Cons: - For the Continental miles option, you can only choose between "regular" generated power and the 100% wind power plans. You cannot get the 25% wind power plan with miles. Why not? - The price differential between regular and 100% is so low (about $4 on a 1,000 Kwh usage) that I wonder why we don't just eliminate the "polluting" kind. - Customer service can get backed up. For the two times I actually spoke to Gexa, I called early (730 AM) on a weekday and got through within 3 minutes. So, take this with a grain of salt. Overall, I'd say that Gexa is doing a fine job for being a utility provider. It is a utility company, not the Four Seasons or dinner at the French Laundry, so my expectations are on a different scale. Would not recommend. I have been a Gexa customer since I moved to Texas in 2019. I was paying around $60 when I moved here 3 years ago. I stayed in a 1 bedroom apt with a chihuahua dog. I worked remote 2 days a week. Now I stay in a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 dogs. I work remote 2 days a week. Somehow my bill is $200+ every month now. On top of that the day after my bill is due I am receiving an email that tells me if I don't pay by whatever date my service will be disconnected. It is always weeks before any disconnection. Why am I receiving this notice only the day after my bill was due? It's so money hungry gexa can charge me an additional $20 for sending this letter not a week not two days but literally a day after my payment is due. If I wasnt paying over $200 each month maybe the payment would be early. Everyone knows if they do not pay a bill it gets disconnected the notice is unnecessary especially the very next day after payment is due. Gexa is making millions extra by this sneaky tactic. I also used to have free weekends but now I no longer qualify because I have been a loyal customer? Newbies can have that plan though. So on Sunday I got an email from Experian about a credit alert. I go check and it was from Pro-collect a collections agency. I reached out to them on Monday and I was told "this is an attempt to collect a debt" on behalf of Gexa energy from 2013 for the sum of $292. I was flabbergasted to say the least because I was totally unaware of this bill. I asked for proof to be sent to my current address and instead I was asked how I'd like to pay for the debt? I replied how do I pay for something I was not aware of in the first place to which there was no reply! I reached out to Gexa energy and of course they could not provide me with any information. How do I pay for something I am unaware of? This is one of the worst forms of bullying and fraud- and until I am provided with some sort of proof about this bill I will continue fighting it! read more

I've used Gexa for a while, and the prices I paid for service was not bad. The problem with Gexa is the customer service. It's so hard to get through to a car and the hold times are really ridiculous. The hild your place in que and return your call service doesn't seem to work adequatelyand there is no confirmation that your phone number is read correctly for the call back. I've moved and have been trying to disconnect my service for a week now. There is not an online option to disconnect and I was holding for 45 minutes before I decided to try back later. This however, is my 3rd time calling within a weeks time. This is very frustrating and for this reason I wouldno longer recommend this company. read more

I need to cancel my account due to moving out of state. Every single time I call customer service to cancel the wait time is over 20 min. Even at 7am when they open there no one there to take your call. The self service portal doesn't have an option to cancel. There is an option to receive a call back to keep your place in line...have yet to receive a call back for the past few days. I swear I am calling into an empty call center..70 min and still no one picks up and messages that the wait time is over 20 min. The energy rates are alright if you do the math on your usage. I was on autopay for most of my service but be warned if your card info changes they will not notify you in any way that they can't process your payment. They will charge you a late fee and sit happily to send you a disconnect notice for more $$ if you let it sit for more than a month. Update: I finally got thru to cancellations within 20 min thru the Spanish queue and the interaction took less than 3 min. I don't know why there is a large disparity between wait times but I'm glad this waiting game is over with!!! read more

During COVID-19, my service contract ended at the beginning of July and I was put on a month-to-month rate. Gexa increased my per KW hour price to 17.9 cents. It caused my family's July bill to increase to over $800. I understand that missing the end of the plan date can cause the price to go up, but not to more than double. Also, I have checked my email and I never received an email that my service was reaching the end of my contract period. I called to try and work something out and the initial person said there was nothing he could. I asked to speak with someone else and was placed on hold for almost 40 minutes before hanging up. To take advantage of families who are using more energy during the COVID-19 quarantine is disgusting. I think they should be shut down. read more

READ the fine print with the plans carefully and even after you do that, you will need to seek expert advice from a mathematician. Look guys, GEXA is not in the business to save you money. They are in the business to generate revenue for their business. Stop being gullible and signing up for plans that are cleverly marketed to hook you and exploit you. All companies do it. The problem lies within falling for scams such as catchy "plans and deals" that are always too good to be true. If you really want to have a fair bill, then sign up for a FIXED plan where the charges will not be variable and nearly impossible to understand. They are NOT meant for the average bear to understand which leaves 99.9% of the population vulnerable to become unofrtunate victims of these awful "deals". Beware of the costly penalty charges to leave a company and take your business elsewhere. Why do the need to charge that much and even have a charge to allow you to leave and take your hard earned cash to another competitor? This is highly indicative of poor customer service and business practices. They are there to get even more out of you or worse, to trap you into staying because you can't afford to leave. Think of a bad and abusive marriage where you are trapped and don't have money but stay because of the kids. Same analogy to your relationship with GEXA. My significant other who was in charge of the utilities fell for this scam. Switch to a company with a decent price for a FIXED rate that is exclusive of minimum rate punishments and you will be golden. I made the switch and pay one rate for exactly what we use. When moving into our apartment we chose to use Gexa Energy. Little did we know the headaches, misery, and unethical practices this company supports. Our first bill for the period of May 21 - June 20 was $280 (we received a $100 credit, so really it was $380) with usage around 1800 kWh. During that month, our apartment was only inhabited from June 5 onwards since we had not moved yet. We thought this bill was high but said that's wait another month. The next month, our usage was around 3700 kWh and a bill of $571 was given to us. We thought this would not be right and begun asking people in our apartment and who live nearby. Nobody we talked to is paying 1/3 of what we were billed and they keep their apartments cooler. I called Gexa who said "it's hot". Our neighbors in our apartment have the same unit and keep their air cooler and paid slightly over $200. After this bill, we kept lights off during the day, air at 78 during the day, and at 76 at night. This took place during 7/23 through 7/29 when we early terminated our contract. For that 6 day period Gexa said we used 780 kWh and needed to pay $150. Gexa predicted we would use over 3300 kWh for the period of July 23 - Aug 22 (even higher than the previous month). Oncor who does the meter reads told me what they were billing Gexa and Gexa was charging us 5 times as much. I described the issue to our new energy company and they were unsure how our usage was so high. From the dates of July 29 - Aug 8, (3 days longer than bill of $150 that Gexa sent us) our new company would charge us $67) Gexa takes advantage of individuals, charges unheard of surcharges, and has incredibly poor customer service. Call to apartment 7/27 to see if previous tenant have had issues, meter read questions, get ac checked. Apartment said they had not heard of this. They came and checked our AC unit twice and added coolant. Everything looked fine. They had someone look at meter and all looked normal. They said they have not heard of anyone in building having a bill this high. We talked to other tenants and people in other apartments nearby. Neighbors in the same apartment unit as us, paid $200 during the period of June 21 - July 21 when our bill was $571. Called to Gexa 7/27 - 12:11 pm - 12:19 pm, and 12:49 pm - 12:57 pm. Every call they just talked me through the math behind the bill, which make sense. I was unsure why our meter usage was so high and what changed. No help was given and I was talked down to. Asked regarding meter read issues and request a read. They told me we would have to pay for it. When asked how much this would be an amount was not given. The agent said "it depends". When asked for a range she said "between $34 to $134". That is a very large range and no further info was given. She told me to call Oncor who does the reads. Call to oncor 7/27 - 2:13pm - 2:27 pm. Gave insight regarding previous tenants meter reads, said how much they billed Gexa. For the billing period of June 21 - July 22, they billed Gexa $116. Gexa billed us $571. Call to utilities commission and compliant sent 7/27 Called apartment 7/29 to give update. Our AC unit was checked again. 7/29- switched energy companies. Gexa charged us $300 ($150 early termination fee) for the period of 7/23-7/28 for energy usage. During this our air was off during the day and kept to 78. Called Gexa on 8/2-said I would get call back from manager, never did (received call at 2:17 pm, called back 2:41 - 2:47) Called Gexa on 8/4-said I would get a call back from a manager, no call back (4:45 pm - 4:59 pm) Called gexa 8/5-said no managers available in dallas, got transferred to Houston to speak to a manager, never called back. (7:58 am - 8:22 am) Follow up email to utility commission on 8/5 Called Gexa on 8/8-asked go speak to manager, got transferred to supervisor, supervisor tried to transfer me to a manager twice but could not get through, was told manager will call me back (8:07 am - 8:34 am) 8/8- compliant filed with better business bureau read more

Terrible customer service. I transferred service and got an email confirmation with tracking number. I noticed I was still getting emails from my old provider regarding my usage so I decided to call Gexa to confirm my account status. The first customer rep couldn't find my account info and said he'd have to transfer me to sales? I was on hold for 20 min before calling back and got a person on the phone right away. Sounded like the same person and he even acknowledged that he remembers talking to me a few min earlier. I ask if he could lookup the tracker number provided by Gexa in the email I received, and he said he couldn't in his system but could transfer me to somebody else that could. A different person took over the call and repeated the same process and answers as the previous person. Then he said he would have to transfer me again. I'm writing this review while I'm on hold. I'm 27 min into this call with maybe 15 min of it on hold so far. Imagine my happiness with this customer service. I don't know if I would have or will save money with Gexa, but I know for sure I've already wasted more money on the phone on hold listening to the same tones on repeat than my monthly electric bill. Gexa charged my card for two payments in one week for that month. I've been trying for two months to get it refunded with continued promises that it's been taken care, yet I still have not got my money back. I've spent hours in the phone trying ti get it figured out with them acting each time as if it's my first call. It's not that difficult to credit my account or issue a refund. read more

They get you in at a competitive rate, then jack it up with out notice at the end of your term. I wonder if this is their business model. My bill more than doubled. They would not work with me. read more

I have been disconnected twice while trying to contact customer service via 713-961-9399 The first attempt I waited on hold for over 30 minutes before being disconnected The second attempt I waited 57 minutes before being disconnected. I am an new customer with your company and I just received my first bill for $292.66. I have no idea how my bill could be that high when my usage was under 2,000. I also did not receive the $100 credit my contract says I'll receive when my usage is under 2,000 Something is wrong here. Is this the way you normally treat your customers? Being a new customer I am simply in shock. I changed electric company's in hopes of better rate/service and at this point I am regretting ever changing to your company. read more
