Thank you Ghion Ethiopian Restaurant for introducing me to Ethiopian food. Just another type of food that was completely foreign to me that I pretty much fell in love with. The two Culture Special Platters that I tried alongside the Shiro and gracious helping of Injera bread was truly an exotic treat to the taste buds. Did it cost a lot? At the time, yes. Was it a lot of food that I was able to save for later that day? Also, yes. Was it worth every penny? Again...yes. I'd love to revisit this restaurant again if I can. Quite possibly my new favorite restaurant in Atlanta! I came because I saw that they had a vegan menu (in addition to the meat menu) and was not let down. The food was SO flavorful and the portions were great. I got the Veggie Lover platter with the vegan 'chicken' and everything was delicious - I especially loved the yellow lentils! My partner loved his Awaze Tibs (beef) and we both left full and happy. Everyone working there was very kind and the space was nicely decorated. It feels like a different restaurant than the one on Cheshire Bridge. A little more hipster, but friendly staff and bright dining room. Good menu and appreciate that they kept their vegan dishes too. Recommend staying for the coffee ceremony on the weekends. It just tastes richer seeing it made in front of you and understanding the spices used. We didn't know what they were at first, but the mesob (woven covers for the injera bread often made of grass and palm leaves) on the tables matched the painting near the entry way representing a dinner in Ethiopia. Oh my goodness! This is the BEST, most authentic Ethiopian food I have tasted outside of Addis. Wow. Full of flavor, with each dish cooked to perfection, containing all the signature spices. I ordered a generously portioned vegetarian platter, additional teff injera, two sambusa, and an extra shiro via Uber Eats. Only today did I find out there are two Ethiopian restaurants next to each other! We opt to go to Ghion and so glad we did! It's self serve, meaning you order at the kitchen, no server to take your order! That's fine, our gracious chef was very helpful with our selections and cheered when we opt for the honey wine! We were visiting Atlanta and I was in the mood for some authentic Ethiopian food! I read the reviews, good and bad and let me tell you! This place was #Delicious! We parked right in the front (plenty of parking spot) walked in and had to walk to a counter to order. Very friendly staff. We ordered the sample platter with vegetable and meat dish!!! It was delicious, flavorful and very filling. It was me and my fiancé and it was so much food! Obviously we ate it all but we were FULL!!! I would say if you have 3 people in your party, it's enough food. If you have 4 people then definitely get an appetizer or two. Will be coming back whenever we are in town. read more

Great Ethiopian food in an unassuming environment pretty much sums up Ghion Cultural Hall. Yeah, the building is old and it's not the nicest, but don't let the look of this place scare you away. Inside, you'll find a cozy, colorful, and warmly decorated Ethiopian dining room with traditional handwoven mesob tables, perfect for a meal or sharing a pot of coffee. Ghion isn't as established or as big as Desta, which many consider to be the best Ethiopian restaurant in town. However, I think the food and service at Ghion is just as good, if not better, than Desta and it has among the best Ethiopian food I've tried anywhere. Ghion has a small parking lot. If you can't find parking out front, you can park in the empty lot next door on the other side of the fence (not Blue Rat Smoke Shop, but the other side). If that lot eventually gets developed, Ghion may have some parking issues. This place isn't very big. There are only 7-8 tables, most seating up to 4 customers comfortably each. They do have one table that seats 6, but I recommend coming with a small group or a date (this is a unique date spot). The soft fabric-covered chairs are comfortable. If you order food, the food will be placed atop your mesob table with drinks, napkins, and other stuff placed on side tables. If you order only coffee or tea, your drinks (coffee pot, cups) will be placed on the mesob table. Ghion uses jebenas which are traditional Ethiopian clay coffee pots with incense (you'll most likely smell the incense as you walk in). The menu contains a good variety of Ethiopian cuisine, mainly beef, lamb, and vegetarian dishes. They also serve chicken and fish, though selections are limited. Most dishes cost about $12-15 each. Some examples include gored gored (seasoned cubed beef, served raw or cooked, $13), fir-fir (or fit-fit, marinated and seasoned injera, $12), yebeg alicha (mild lamb curry-spiced stew, $13), and shiro (seasoned and roasted chickpea stew, $10). Injera is the spongy, sourdough-like flatbread used in Ethiopian cuisine. Beverage-wise, they offer authentic Ethiopian coffee (Bunna), beer (e.g. Bedele, Hakim Stout, Meta), and wine (Gouder, Axumite). Coffee costs $5 for 2 people ($10 family size), beer $5 each, and wine $7 per glass or $23 per bottle. I recommend ordering the Ghion Cultural Special ($35). It's a combination platter that includes many different kinds of food, making deciding what to order simple and easy. The Ghion Cultural Special comes with a varied selection of assorted vegetables, kitfo (minced beef marinated in mitmita, a chili powder spice blend, and clarified butter; served raw or cooked), derek and awaze tibs (small cuts of beef seasoned, marinated, and cooked with various ingredients like garlic, onion, rosemary, tomato, jalapeno, berbere Ethiopian spice mix and other spices), and doro wot (chicken stewed with onion, garlic, and jalapeno) all served both over and with a side plate of injera. I think the special is fantastic. It's neatly and beautifully presented and all of the items are fresh and delicious. Our vegetables included a green salad, curried potatoes and carrots, collard greens, sauteed carrots and (I believe) green beans, and three different kinds of lentils (green, red-orange, and yellow). The doro wot stew is the centerpiece, featuring bone-in chicken, a hard-boiled egg, and succulent clumps of soft white cheese. My favorite item is probably the kitfo. It's kind of like eating rich and buttery ground beef. It's satisfyingly savory and flavorful. The tibs are more like eating sliced steak, somewhat reminiscent of carne asada (tougher). The doro wot uses tender, juicy dark meat chicken. Overall, the special is terrific and one I could order again and again. I'd go so far to say it's a must-try dish in Atlanta. The special is ideal for about 4 people which works out to be less than $10 per person. This makes it a fine value. Even if there's less than 4 in your party, I still recommend ordering it. You can just take leftovers home and have something yummy to eat later. If you need an extra plate of injera, ask for one. They're complimentary. And yes, you have to eat with your hands. Grab a roll of injera, tear off a piece, and use it to wrap/pick up your food off the plate. Service is friendly. It would be nice if the dining room had better air conditioning. At the time of writing this review, Ghion Cultural Hall has a Yelp check-in offer that will take 20% off your total bill, making this restaurant even that much better of a value. read more

Of course, that's the only picture I saw, so imagine my surprise when I walked in and saw multicolored walls decorated in posters, flags, and other trinkets. I thought I was in the wrong place until the hostess/waitress invited us in. The seating was also different than what we expected. The tables look like goblet drums but instead of a flat surface, its surface was concave and we had to hunch over to eat (which I was not really a fan of). I ordered the Vegan Drek Tibs ($13) and my non-vegan friend had a spicy Lamb dish ($13). When the waitress brought out our food, my order was laid out on one side of a large piece of injera and my friend's was in a separate bowl. Then, the waitress began ladling the lamb dish onto the same injera as my vegan dish! I politely stopped her and after clarifying that the lamb was in fact the lamb dish and not just another part of my vegan dish, I asked if she could please keep the food separate. She looked surprised but kindly obliged. So a note to all the vegans enjoying a meal with your non-vegan friends... ask to keep the dishes separate and explicitly mention that you don't eat ANY meat. The Vegan Tibs were amazing! The taste was fabulous and the tibs had a nice crunch to them - even my non-veg friend said it was good, and she's not the type to lie to spare feelings. I was very surprised that I liked the dish as much as I did. It came with cooked onions, jalapeno, and tomato which added depth and more flavor to the tibs. I would definitely recommend this dish! The waitress gave us plenty of injera to enjoy and was friendly throughout the meal. I would definitely come again for the tibs! CONS: - The pricing was okay with the extra 20% off. - I didn't like the tables, because I felt like I was sitting very far away from it and was nervous about making a mess! Also, the tables were low, so I was kind of hunched over for the meal. - The restaurant did not seem exceptionally clean. - My vegan food was almost contaminated! PARKING: The little lot outside the restaurant was packed (even though the restaurant itself was empty), so I parked in the abandoned-looking lot directly adjacent (next to) the restaurant. This place was Very Good. The service was excellent. We showed up late at night and we happened to be the only ones there around 11pm, but that didn't stop the carry out orders. Ppl were still trying to order after they were closed which is a dood sign that the food was awesome!! I had been craving Ethiopian food for a while and this place hit the spot! It's tucked in a corner with a very small parking lot. It has a very authentic feel to it. Everything is delicious down to the hot tea! I had to get some of that to go! Ethiopian food used to represent a large chunk of me and my fiance's diets. We love sopping up berbere inflected meats and tender veggies with sour, soft injera and thus looked forward to checking out the seemingly legit Ghion. We arrived to a relatively full dining room on a recent weeknight and were seated at one of the small tables with stools, which made for a fun experience. This place definitely feels divey but the service was helpful and sweet. We ordered two dishes: a requisite vegetarian sampler and lamb misto. Our food didn't take too long to arrive and came with ample injera. The injera had a good sour kick but had some unfortunately dry edges. It, thankfully, did not detract from our solid platter. Of the veggies, we found the misir wot (our usual favorite) to run a bit dry and bland, but the green lentils, cabbage, and shiro stood out with excellent spicing and textures. The lamb misto comprised a standard, deep red lamb kay wot and a more complex lamb alicha with notes of curry and warn spices. We dug the lamb alicha more than the more one note kay wot, though we appreciated the fact that so many lamb options were even on offer. Our meal ran around $30 which is on par with other Ethiopian spots around the city and a fair value given the quantity of food. The meal certainly satisfied our Ethiopian craving and we wouldn't hesitate to return next time the craving for this awesome cuisine strikes. read more

The atmosphere was comfortable and decorated with flags, pictures, and other cultural decor. They had Ethiopian music videos playing on the tv. Ethipopian. Sounds interesting right?! Hence I went here. Lol. The owner (?) was super cordial and nice. He was a tad strange at first since my friend and I were asking for some food recommendations, but he only seemed to smile at us without really acknowledging our question so it made it sort of strange. :/ The restaurant was dimly lit, but it had a lounge type atmosphere where you can chill and enjoy a hookah. In the back wall, you can see the different types of alcohol they serve as well. We both ended up getting lamb. The ye-beg tibs to be exact since we weren't feeling like getting the stew (ye-beg key wet--spicy version or alicha--mild version). There were other meat choices like beef and chicken of course, but you're getting Ethiopian so you might as well go with an exotic meat choice. So you have to know that you will be using your hands for this dish. There will be a flat bread/tortilla style item used to wrap the lamb with. The lamb itself was tender and pretty flavorful. There was a spicy sauce that can be used to flavor the lamb, but the jalapeños already mixed in with the meat will do it. For me, I just can't seem to have gotten enough of the spices. A gentleman sitting near us recommended the KITFO. This is usually served raw, but you can ask for it to be cooked to your liking. I think this is similar to the dulet on the menu, but I don't really recall since I wasn't proactive in this conversation. Just scratch my attempt as the description since I have not the slightest clue what was recommended to us. Parking... Um. It pretty much sucked. Even moseying to this place on a Tuesday evening, the few cars there already made it seem crowded. I cannot imagine this place getting busy and packed. The actual parking lot can hold like maybe 8 cars max. Perhaps even less. There is another business right next door too so maybe people do us that side of the parking lot as well. read more

I was torn between Ghion and another larger Ethiopian restaurant in the area. I've been to the other one before so in an effort to branch out I decided to try Ghion. The portion sizes are huge, and it seems they have the pandemic protocols under control (no dine in). They package more than enough injera to accompany the meal. I thought the proteins were flavorful and the veggies were as well. I would have like some of the items packaged separately so they weren't mixed together. Overall it's OK Ethiopian food (I've been to Ethiopia once so I have some point of reference, but I'm no expert). I like supporting these smaller businesses especially during the pandemic and I encourage everyone to do the same. read more

Ghion Cultural Hall is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! This is without a doubt my fave Ethiopian food so far in Atlanta. I'm no expert but the flavors and textures were just all there for me. I brought some clients here for a work lunch on a whim and they enjoyed it as well. Ghion is located on Cheshire Bridge, next door to the Blue Rat Smoke Shop. They have a small private parking lot. We had no issues on a random weekday at lunchtime but I've seen it absolutely swamped on weekend nights. The Ghion Cultural Special is definitely the way to go if you have a group of people looking to share. (It probably feeds 3-4 moderate eaters.) The Special is an enormous piece of injera laid across a serving platter and topped with: - Yellow split peas - Green lentils - Brown lentils - Green beans with carrots - Potatoes and carrots - Stewed greens - Beets - Lamb dry tibs - Awaze tibs - Kitfo - Doro wat (chicken stew) Some of the dishes vary as they're all cooked fresh daily, but my favorites are without a doubt the doro wat and the green beans, all wrapped up in a spongy piece of injera.
