This was easily the most fun we had on our recent vacation! We had a pretty mixed group with a lot of kids and some adults who were crabbing. I just came along for the ride and helped locate the little guys. At first, it seemed like it would be a project finding them, but every minute it gets darker, you realize you're surrounded. Between the beautiful sunset, kids having a ton of fun, and learning some about the local wildlife (we found a couple pregnant crabs!), it really was a great experience and we'll do it again for sure on our next trip. Fair warning though for my fellow mid-lifers -- if you're not much of a hiker/runner, walking through the sand dunes for a good two hours REALLY left me pretty sore! So plan a dip in the hot tub after if you've got one in the rental. :) read more

We took the Ghost Crab Quest Tour on July 1st, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish! Our group included 10 adults ranging from our late 20s to early 60s, as well as a very curious 3-year-old toddler, and everyone had a great time. The tour was informative, entertaining, and so much fun--a perfect mix for all ages. Our guide, Lindsay, was outstanding. She was engaging, knowledgeable, and had a wonderful way of connecting with both the adults and our youngest group member. She made the evening enjoyable for everyone, answering questions, sharing cool facts, and keeping us laughing throughout the adventure. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Outer Banks who's looking for something unique and memorable to do in the evening. We had two kids and two adults that did the ghost crab quest. We had a lot of fun. Definitely a must if you have children.

The whole family enjoyed-both adults and kids. We travel quite a bit but never seen anything like that especially when our home is Chicago. I'd also like to note the woman leading the tour was so sweet, knowledgeable, and very interactive with our kids and others but definitely a great face to the business. This was so much fun!!!! My family of 5 (me, husband, 2 college aged sons and 12 year old daughter) completely enjoyed the Ghost Crab Quest one night on our vacation. Highly recommend. Two young boys (ages 9, 6) loved the scavenger hunt. I think it took the boys about 1.5 hours to complete all the clues. They never lost interest, followed the rules easily, and were so proud to solve the last clue finding the treasure chest. We chose the theme "Outrageous Ocean" because one of the boys was studying a unit on animal adaptations. Our Captain happened to have a pirate flag and a hilarious pirate voice. These are just two of the many photos and videos we took. The best comment after the activity, one of the boys asked if we could do a scavenger hunt every day they were here. The size of the treasure chest is fairly big. I assumed it would be smaller, but it was pretty big (see pic). The boys had to work together to carry it. However, I was able to easily carry it, so it's not too heavy. For the grown ups, it was really fun to watch the boys listen and think about the clues. It was fun to see them searching for the clues (none were too hard, but sometimes they just didn't see it). I would compare it to a sort of Easter egg hunt with all the work (except whoever plays the Captain & placing the clues) is done for you. Jim from Ghost Crab Quest was wonderful to work with. The communication about delivery and pickup was just right. We originally planned to do the scavenger hunt in the morning, but ended up doing it around 7:30 PM. With Jim's clear instructions, we felt confident about hiding the treasure chest outside the house. He said that we could bury it at the beach, but none of us wanted to dig! I felt like the value was super too. This is an experience that the boys won't soon forget. One of the best parts is how tired the boys were after. :) Happy and tired. read more

This was Awesome! We were looking for something different to do in between beach days. I went with a group that consisted of adults, teens and young toddlers. Everyone had a blast. We were given a time to show up at the beach and our guide was ready and waiting. The guide gave us tips and trips for a successful crabbing adventure. It was funny to see all the children scurry to catch the fast little buggers ;) Even some of the more reserved adults joined in. Buckets and flashlights were provided. 6/11/20 Can't  say I have been to Kitty Hawk since possibly 2016 or 2017.  I will be staying  between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head next weekend.  It will feel really good going to another state and having some time off. I will look forwards to seeing some of the places I wrote about in my novel. Most importantly I look forward to smelling the ocean air and swimming in the water.  It will be nice to see stay inside of another beach house and see things I never saw in a long time.   Especially since it will be in the Kitty Hawk/ Nagshead area.   I will have pictures to take when the time comes. Walking the shores at night without shoes makes things more interesting. Especially if you don't have the lights on. Than come the surprise when you turn on you're flashlight and see all the ghost crabs about you.Have no fear, 99% of the time they move away from you. Once and a while you might even see them during the day, but it is even more dangerous for them. Why? The Birds. read more

Wow I was amazed by how much fun I had, and my family had, ghost crab hunting. I was impressed with the quality of the beach, our beyond wonderful tour guide Chandler, who was the best, and the amount of crabs our preschooler and teen spent over an hour chasing on the beach. That in itself was a treat. It is rare to find something that both our teen and preschooler enjoy so much at the same time. I have attached pictures of the good quality of crabs and how large they were! Of course Chandler is a huge advocate of our beaches and he picked up trash while we picked up crabs. Wonderful. He also emphasized the importance of protecting the crabs, and we let them go in the end. That was fun too. I would highly highly recommend this activity for the family. Even parents will love seeing their kids run around having fun at night and wearing themselves out! Will do again. read more

We've been coming to Kitty Hawk twice a year for nearly 20 years and this is one of the best activities we've done! Everyone from my 8 year-old daughter to my 60-something parents had a blast. Our guide was Brett, a local college student home for the summer. He was knowledgeable about the local wildlife and taught us all about ghost crabs before we embarked on our adventure. He was great with the kids, teaching them how to properly "scoop" up the crabs and showing them how to find the tiny ones scurrying across the sand. He helped us find and capture the crabs and only laughed at me a little when I squealed as a crab ran across my foot. It's a beautiful way to spend a summer evening on the beach! My wife and two young daughters who are 1.5 and 4 had a great time with Jim hunting ghost crabs and learning even more than we bargained for as well. My wife made the reservation the same day which was cool how flexible it was and we were chasing crabs on the beach that night. My son, wife and I just finished a ghost crab quest with Jim and it was awesome! We would highly recommend this activity for any family with younger children (4-9). We departed at dusk and started with learning a few things about the creatures that roam the Outer Banks beaches at night: turtles, grey foxes, and ghost crabs. When it was just dark enough, we hit the beach and went in search of ghost crabs to catch in flashlight-guided nets. The little buggers are mighty fast, but with a little teamwork were able to snag a few. The whole adventure was about an hour long and our son had a fantastic time. We would qualify it as enjoyable, low-key fun that contrasts nicely with a lot of other evening family activities you find down here in Corolla. Jim was very friendly and knowledgeable and did a great job making sure that our son was engaged in the fun. Again, we'd highly recommend this activity for families down in the Outer Banks. Oh, and we participated from the Hampton Inn in Corolla and heard that it is also offered down at the Sanderling in Duck too. read more
