Jerry also came prepared with umbrellas. We forged on. We walked up to New York monument where we were able to gain our bearings and received a briefing on how the events unfolded throughout the day of battle on September 17, 1862. Also, we learned about the battles that were fought along the way and the battle that eventually ended the bloodshed. We then drove to various stops including where the Union camped and walked to the edge of the corn filed as well as to where the Confederates awaited at Sunken Road aka Bloody Lane. We finished the tour at Burnside Bridge, visiting both sides. We stood on the high ground where the Confederates held and the low ground across the river where the Union crossed Burnside Bridge. Each location, we received masterful knowledge of the events and about the people in the Battle of Antietam. Of course, all of our questions were answered. Despite the weather, Jerry was professional with his presentation and considerate of our wellbeing during our walks. Don't miss this tour!

At the exterior, the landscape slopes toward the cottage more than we thought was comfortable. The showers and dishwashing facilities were in good condition. This region generally has quite a few different attractions for nature lovers including a long hike along the Appalachian trail nearby and proximity to quaint small towns. Last, but definitely not least, Nick and his partner were among the most accommodating and friendly hosts one could ask for. When we had difficulty setting a campfire they generously gifted us some leftover materials to start our fire and advised us on best practices! We recommend that anyone interested in having a weekend away in nature investigate the Treehouse camp!

Positives - Campsites were very clean and it is right next to the Potomac river. Nice long trail…read morethat you can walk or bike on. Beautiful trees. The camp host was very active throughout the day and gave great local recommendations. Negatives - you can't really see the river due to the grass and trees. It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.

Terrible Food, Zero Atmosphere - A Complete Waste of $189…read more My wife and I booked the August 1st 6:00 PM Dinner Train expecting a nice date night, but it turned out to be an absolute disappointment from start to finish. Charging $189 for this experience is completely unacceptable. The meal was advertised as a three-course dinner, but we were only served two. Worse, the food was practically inedible. We both love salmon, but what was served tasted old, fishy, and completely unfresh, we couldn't eat more than a single small bite. The sweet potatoes were bland, the lima beans were oddly sweet, and the dinner rolls were literally handed to us in plastic Ziploc bags. For $189, there should at least be basic meal choices (like baked chicken, rice/mashed potatoes, and green beans) instead of forcing a poorly prepared, single option on everyone. My window seat was so severely scratched up that I couldn't even see out of it and had to move. Once I moved, the view consisted almost entirely of overgrown brush, weeds, and the backs of new house developments. Despite being tied to a historical station and museum, there was no narration, no historical facts, no music, and no entertainment whatsoever. You are essentially sitting in total silence on a slow train eating terrible food. This trip was nowhere near worth $189. Potential visitors should save their money, and management seriously needs to rethink their catering, pricing, and overall guest experience.

I discovered the Walkersville Southern Railroad when researching Polar Express inspired train rides…read morein the area- our kiddos aren't quite old enough to fully grasp the magic of the experience, so I've been hesitant to book the large immersive expensive experience offered by main lines- I thought it would be a good idea to start with a more 'low-key' experience & see how it went- ~60min train ride with a visit from Santa, carolers, and the conductor- the kids had a magical wonderful time- they enjoyed having their photos taken, their tickets punched, and hearing the train go choo- I would say their joy made the experience- on its own the train was as expected more basic-a bit underwhelming- 30minutes out, then 30 minutes backward. I understand development happens so seeing a lot of backyards of houses, development centers, and more modern town- it is what it is- but for a next experience I would like to find a ride that offers more scenic experience & a bit more variety in the ride I was also a bit disappointed with the kid's Santa's gift- the advertisement came off like the gift was a bell (reminiscent of Polar Express), but the kids were gifted some sticker create a train kit- it really wasn't a universal gift for all ages- both my kids weren't old enough to understand what it was, so basically I put the gift together-they said cool & moved on- it would have been nicer to have something more rewarding from Santa.

A decent place during the day to see the trains as they pass by…read more The Harpers Ferry train station is a nice old building that adds to the character of the town. It is at the lower elevation and to the north of the town. When we visited, it was unattended and there were no staff inside. The restrooms were open and in decent shape, located on the west side of the building. It is a long building with 3-4 large rooms made of light wood with historical pictures on the walls. Parking is available in the lot that surrounds the station, though it depends on what is open at the time and how busy the area is. Many other visitors noted in their reviews that the building is not open at night and operates on a very limited schedule. A little research shows that Amtrak and MARC trains both serve this station. Throughout the day my party and I observed trains passing through without stopping, giving visitors a sense of how active the rail line still is. Overall, it is worth seeing for its historic look, but travelers should plan ahead since services are limited and the station may not be staffed. Up the hill to the south is the town and down the hill to the east visitors can view the Armory grounds, River overlook, and John Brown's fort.

The staff is friendly and helpful and the store is fully stocked with all campers may need and then some. When touring Washington DC and all the battlefields this place is centrally located. We stayed a month and still didn't see it all. We'll be staying here again when in the area.

I called to make arrangements and was told that I needed to submit an application that is reviewed and approved by the owner before I can rent a site. I asked what was on the application. Apparently they need to know your salary, prior criminal record and other stuff that is NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. As a retired LEO, I have no criminal record. But even if I did, nobody should have to qualify for a security clearance to rent a damn camping site!

Probably summer too but it didn't seem like there were any swimming options at the park. They had a ton of activity options for kids but we couldn't try any because it was thanksgiving and the staff was off. Still, it looks like a super fun place for kids. Like I said before, I had a lot of questions about the cabin. It mentions that it had a grill but said nothing about a fire circle. It does, indeed have a fire circle but this cabin (I suspect due to its ADA status) was EXTRA TALL. You really couldn't cook on it or even roast marshmallows easily. On the other hand it would be pretty great for families with small kids. While the ring still got hot your kid absolutely CANNOT fall into the fire. We were there when it was cold and the heaters worked a little TOO well. It didn't seem like there was a comfy medium. They were either on and you were roasting or off and you were freezing. Still, for a winter camp it was nice to have the option. The bathroom was extra big which was also quite nice. Remember to bring EVERYTHING, including hand soap and hand towels for the bathroom. Though it kind of feels like a hotel or Airbnb you will need all the essentials. While the website states that there is Wi-Fi and a tv for watching stuff, the Wi-Fi was not available while we were there. Also, the fold out couch was kind of falling apart. If you're going with kids they probably won't mind but if it's an all adult camp group the folks stuck on the fold out will likely not be thrilled.
