For my…read morehusband and myself, this was our second "Ride to the End of the Line" and although our first trip was great, this one exceeded any expectations we had; it was a wonderful all-around experience. There are three reasons this Potomac Eagle experience is worth repeating, and why the value is exceptional: 1. First and Foremost: The Potomac Railroad Employees From first contact to disembarking upon return to Wapacomo Station the employees made us feel welcome and valued. Although all of the employees were great, three young men stood out among their peers...Lucas, Carlos and Kalib made our trip a truly memorable experience. Immediately upon boarding, they offered us coffee or tea and throughout the day, they not only checked-in to see how we were doing, they stopped by and talked to us. I watched them treat other guests in our car the same. When we learned these young men were working their first jobs, we were amazed; they truly epitomized superior customer service. In today's world, I rarely see such outstanding care and service. Potomac Eagle is doing something right; other service providers could learn from the Potomac Eagle version of excellence. 2. Second: Superior Food throughout the trip Since we were on the all day trip, our reservation included breakfast and lunch appetizers with a small treat before we disembarked at Petersburg. Upon reboarding, Lucas and Carlos immediately welcomed us back with coffee and Arnold Palmer (lemonade-sweet tea) drinks. They kept our cups and glasses full for the entire return trip. The true value from our trip, however, was our Superior Dining experience. Chef William prepared a four-star, four-course dinner (Superior Dining class) that will bring me back later this summer for another excursion. We had beef tenderloin and Chilean Sea Bass w/Lemon for our main courses with appetizers, salads, and desserts. I felt like I gained 3 pounds from the outstanding dinner alone!! 3. Third but not least important: The Trough Canyon Experience Approximately mid-way to Petersburg, the train stops to allow passengers into their open-air gondola car for a 45-minute unobstructed view. While the train goes through the Trough Canyon, passengers see eagles soaring, dear foraging, and other natural wonders. The trip offers an opportunity only available via the Potomac Eagle...driving a car wouldn't be the same. For all the great things I can say about the Potomac Eagle experience, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the opportunities and people in Petersburg. The trip offers an additional excursion to Smoke Hole Caverns. For those who do not go to Smoke Hole, there are small vintage shops, museums, restaurants, and/or a chance to sit back, relax and to just be in the moment. It's a day away from the normal grind...Ride the Potomac Eagle to the End of the Line. Take a step back in time and enjoy!

Our tour guide, Paul, was very knowledgeable and added a lot of great humor to our tour. The caverns themselves are beautiful. We learned so much beyond the typical stalactite and stalagmite information kids hear in elementary school. Those who are taller than about 5'4" or 5'5" will need to duck a bit while moving through the caverns to avoid hitting your head on the formations. It's also very chilly, so be sure to bring a sweater or hoodie with you. The last time I visited Crystal Grottoes was in elementary school for a field trip, so it was great to revisit after so many years.

Just look up the address of where to park (as it's in the back on a different street) and you're good to go. The tour starts off with an informative movie. The house stayed with Marshall's family until it became a public historical site, so all the rooms were just as he left them. The tour guide had a lot of good stories about the private life of Marshall, which was really interesting to hear about. I'm glad the house was preserved, despite it being in rough shape when the last family member sold it. It's a gem of a site. There is a very small gift shop section. The tours are a bit over an hour and totally worth it to visit.

First, all the staff and tour guides were really cool and very informative. They were even nice enough to hold some stuff for us when we wanted to purchase some souvenirs, and no one was around. There were a lot of places you can explore and enjoy a national historical park. This was stated from back in the civil war, and you can go into many of the buildings that had information on what occurred along with machinery from that time. There were many information signs around you can read while walking around. Along with this, there were really nice views and trails that you can take, including the Appalachian Trail, which I really loved. They also have nice restaurants and snack areas you can sit and enjoy. It can be pricy but worth it as the places I tried were good. I didn't get a chance to explore everything here, but I absolutely plan to come back to finish the trails and explore more. It's definitely a must do if you come to West Virginia!

Many of the original buildings were turned into exhibition halls. Some were turned into commercial businesses such as restaurants and gift shops. One important building still standing was the one John Brown and his men took their last stand against the US army. The family and I enjoyed exploring this town under perfect weather. Parking inside the town was limited and not free. Offsite parking with shuttle service was available for a low cost.

Military Museum [Frederick MD]…read more We had some time on our last day in MD before heading to the airport... from Linthicum Heights we drove some 50 miles to Frederick. We found a spot on a metered street parking in front of the museum. Admission is $9.50/adult. The museum is dedicated to telling the medical story of the Civil War. There are a lot to see... and learn. The exhibits were great and educational. We learned how the creation of Civil War medicine impacted the present day. Each gallery offered different exhibits following through the footsteps of the soldiers and surgeons and the harsh conditions and personal sacrifices they went through. I can't even imagine how they evacuate the wounded... an "ambulance" then was a wagon pulled by two horses and carted off to a medical facility. Or how about how they did amputations, amputations were the most common surgical operation during the conflict with more than 60,000 being performed. The wounded soldiers suffered different mortality rates depending on where the amputation took place on the body. There are two floors of exhibits. Stairs and an elevator are accessible to the top floor. There are bathrooms on both levels. I am not in the medical field and found the museum very interesting and educational. My mom arranged for us to go on this tour, after having read positive reviews on another website. We didn't really know what we had in store for us, but she stumbled onto a local treasure. Once you park and (probably) hike your way toward the rendezvous point, you'll head inside a church lounge where you can sit comfortably and get some background information. Your guide will be dressed in historical garb, and he may even break out into song at various points, between deep-dive presentation of historical narrative. Okay, so costume and singing aren't usually my scene (and in fact, they sometimes make me cringe), but this expert is so totally in earnest that it was actually refreshing. How can you not respect someone with this level of knowledge and commitment? You really feel like you're seeing the area through a historical lens. Every sight you see is informed by the guide, which adds rich layers of context. I admit that I kind of felt weirdly sorry for the other area tourists who were roaming the place uninformed. Some of the rocks, rubble, ruins, trails, and geography you see played a role in American history that you might not recognize, and this awareness made so many of the local sights more enjoyable. You do plenty of walking. Bring water, and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. You will also have breaks from the walking to reconvene. The tour was such an experience that we actually had ice cream with the other tour group members afterward to rehash and decompress. The guide does a haunted tour that I haven't tried, but which he describes as more lighthearted. The staff at Pedego were extremely helpful in getting us ready. They adjusted seats and for me that was at least three times before we finally settled on the lowest position possible. I'm sorry I don't remember his name, but he kept telling me that I'll be fine and you never forget how to ride a bike. He said it multiple times. You know what? He was right. We had a fantastic time and I didn't want to get off the bike when we got back. We decided to do our own tour with a provided map from Pedego. We did have to go out into the street a small amount of time. Our first stop was the historic Mt. Olivet Cemetery where you will find famous inhabitants like Francis Scott Key. The cemetery was the perfect place for us to acclimate ourselves. I kept thinking if I fall, at least I will fall on grass (or a headstone but I think I'll hit grass first). But luckily, none of us fell. The cemetery was flat with a wide road and only a couple of cars. When we felt comfortable, we made our way to Baker Park and found a covered bridge. We rode along Carroll Creek park and then headed back to Pedego after two hours. The bikes are heavy but with the pedal assist, you will not tire out as much. LOL. I loved being able to actually look at beautiful Frederick without having to do too much work. I think anyone who knows how to ride a bike will do fine on an electric bike. You might like it more than traditional pedaling! Bring your own helmets if you have one. There is a small bag attached to the bike if you have a water bottle or other small items that you want to bring along.
