This is a beautiful state park. Years ago we hiked up the sis of the waterfall. There's different trails you can take. We parked at the handicapped parking area. This was really nice bc there's a boardwalk that is accessible to wheelchairs and people who mobility issues. This walk isn't very long and takes you right to the falls. There's seating along the way and at the falls itself. Beautiful and relaxing!

The falls weren't as impressive as last time, but at least we got to see some of the tree leaves starting to turn orange. The lack of water also allowed people to scale and it was quite crowded.

This is a smaller park than its neighbor across the road (Rt 77) Catoctin Mountain National Park. It doesn't have as many trails and the mountain not as high, however it's got the scenic lake and waterfalls. Good place to visit all year round but wintertime is particularly peaceful and quiet and the view of the frozen lake is amazing.

Great spot for families especially with children. There's a beach and a playground and a grassy area and picnic tables and bathrooms. The hiking is ok and all over just an ok spot because the water is a little bit smelly and the trails are not far enough away from the highway, so it doesn't feel as serene. The sound of the semi trucks going down the hill kind of takes away from the vibe. The one benefit of it being so close to the road however is there is an accessible parking lot with an accessible trail to see the waterfall...that is really cool. But the waterfall itself is pretty disappointing, as is the lake. You can swim in the lake if you're ok with the smell and there are showers. You can't swim in the waterfall/watering hole (well, I guess you could but you aren't supposed to according to the signs). But pretty good amenities overall. There was no one at the station when we got here, so not sure how much it typically costs because we got in for free lol. Seems like there's big events here with the aggressive amount of parking lots. Overall solid spot, but I wouldn't go back, but you can have a good time there!

This review is for the Cunningham State Park lake/beach, which the address to get to it is 14274 William Houck Dr, Thurmont, MD 21788. I heard you have to arrive right when they open, at around 8:00am in order to get in during peak season, July is the busiest. It normally is filled to capacity by 10:00am, then you have to wait for patrons to exit before they let others enter, I believe is on the weekends mainly. I was lucky and we came the Sunday before Labor Day, it was hot and we got right in (1:30pm). Lots of parking but the lot was getting full. They have ramps for those with strollers, wheelchairs, wagons, etc. It's a man made lake with sand. Nice facilities. LOTS of areas where you can use grills along with trees for shade, so no pavilions or canopies needed. There were probably about 5 birthday parties that I saw going on, people brought hammocks, small speakers, they went all out, it was great. They have a food vending area where they sell hot dogs, ice cream, nachos, burgers, slushies and drinks (they take cash and credit cards). Their bathroom facilities and bath houses are nice too, all the buildings are made of stone. Its $7.00 per person, but kids in a car seat or booster get in free (credit cards or cash taken). They have campsites, you can either bring your tent, camper, or camp in their cabins. I wasn't able to find a price on those, but you can call to find out. If you are camping out, you're able to get into the lake/beach right away and don't have to wait, even if they're filled to capacity, not sure how that works. They have canoe rentals too. It's great day trip, just 25 minutes from us, will definitely return!

No camping or long hikes or waterfall slides for me today, I did have the opportunity to park and take a brief hike this afternoon through the park. I was passing from Hagerstown to Thurmont and drove through. Along the way, I passed any number of parking areas until the right one caught my eye and I stopped. A half hour out and back along a natural trail through the woods cleared my mind and helped me get into the right state. Pretty well populated though not crowded. I would have stayed longer but I have places to be. Perhaps I will return soon. [Review 15583 overall - 631 in Maryland - 1087 of 2021.]

I definitely enjoyed myself. It's nice to be able to get that bitch environment without going far away from home. It's definitely Tucktaway and if you're not a local you're not gonna find this place. The water temperature definitely cold but it's a good time. You don't have to worry about Waze very relaxing and the people are very friendly. There is a place where you can buy ice cream and use the restroom inside along with a picnic area and a path to go hiking.

A thirty minute drive north of Frederick, Cunningham Falls State Park is the perfect family day trip. Here's why: 1) Scenery: From the drive up to the hike through the forest, the views are beautiful. There's a man-made lake and the largest cascading waterfall in the state. There are several trails that are gorgeous. 2) Parking: There's plenty of it along the lake. There are two lots and the lower lot always has spots (and a restroom nearby). 3) Hikes: We took the Lower Trail to Cunningham Falls, which was short and easy to do with a toddler. On the way back to the lot, we hiked the Cliff Trail through rocks. Our toddler did both and never asked to be carried. Going in the off season, we weren't charged the $5 entrance fee. It's a trash-free park so take out everything you carry in.

I visited Cunningham Falls State Park a few weeks ago during the beginning of the reopening of state parks in Maryland. It was probably a 45-60 minute drive as it is located near Frederick. Definitely make sure that you plan to arrive early as they close the park when it hits capacity, which was by noon on my visit. There is an entry fee and it's different for in-state/out of state (which is dumb given how often people travel between MD, VA, and DC but I digress). I chose to park near the beach to have easy access to the falls. From a social distancing perspective , there was very little at the falls. I chose to stick to the peripherary and climbed all the way to the top of the falls where there were few people. I actually found a nice rock and ate my packed lunch. After hiking the falls, I drove to the other area were there is more hiking. I completed the Bob's Hill hike which was mostly uphill going there and downhill back. There were not many people I saw along the way. I also completed the short Catoctin Furnace trail, which is only 0.25 miles but gives a glimpse into the past of this area as an ironworks. There is a really nice playground in this area although it was closed at the time of my visit. It seems this area of the park has no entrance fee as there was no booth to pay upon entry. I chose to visit Cunningham Falls because it is the largest waterfall in Maryland, but I really enjoyed the hiking more in the end. I definitely plan to return in the nearish future to hike some of the longer trails.

Great ten mile hike (a bit less, really) is the loop starting with Cunningham Falls, up to Wolf Rock, then over to chimney rock and back to the visitors center. Take the left fork when descending from chimney rock, to see the gorgeous cliff rocks along the stream (and the noisy road). Staff at the visitors center are really sweet and helpful.

Really cute beach area where you can swim, paddle board, and kayak! Obviously not a super nice beach or clear water, but good for a day trip. Also bathrooms, a food option, and a playground. It gets pretty crowded on the weekends so you need to get there before 11/12.

    Victoria J.

Had a great time hiking with my dog not too long ago! The falls has different trails so you can take a longer more rocky path or a very mild walk to see the falls. People are always climbing up by the waterfall. They also have a beach area with some nice grills and a play ground. Definitely an inexpensive family day out!

Nice park with lots of trails, lake, fishing and waterfall. Nice terrain and all sorts of levels of hiking. Great area for bouldering too.

The camp host was very active throughout the day and gave great local recommendations. Negatives - you can't really see the river due to the grass and trees. It also says you can fish, which you can as long as you can make it down an incredibly steep embankment but there was not really a place to stand comfortably to fish and at least at site 5 there are quite a bit of rocks in the way. There was also a ton of little moths and gnats. Even with a fire the bugs made it unbearable to enjoy our time. Setting up and packing up was horrible. We understand bugs exist in nature but they were flying in our hair, mouth, nose, nothing worked to get rid of them. Also, the camp sites are just yards from a somewhat busy road. A few times people drove by and purposefully rev'd their engines. We could also hear a train in the distance going in the middle of the night. Maybe a different time of year would make all the difference regarding the annoying bugs but may is not it.

I had a lot of questions when I made the reservation for Stoney Brook Cabin (the wheel chair…read moreaccessible one) but I pulled the trigger and I'm so glad we did. First I'll talk about the park itself then I'll talk about the cabin, because I figure some people probably have the same questions we did. This seems like an ideal place for spring or fall camping. Probably summer too but it didn't seem like there were any swimming options at the park. They had a ton of activity options for kids but we couldn't try any because it was thanksgiving and the staff was off. Still, it looks like a super fun place for kids. Like I said before, I had a lot of questions about the cabin. It mentions that it had a grill but said nothing about a fire circle. It does, indeed have a fire circle but this cabin (I suspect due to its ADA status) was EXTRA TALL. You really couldn't cook on it or even roast marshmallows easily. On the other hand it would be pretty great for families with small kids. While the ring still got hot your kid absolutely CANNOT fall into the fire. We were there when it was cold and the heaters worked a little TOO well. It didn't seem like there was a comfy medium. They were either on and you were roasting or off and you were freezing. Still, for a winter camp it was nice to have the option. The bathroom was extra big which was also quite nice. Remember to bring EVERYTHING, including hand soap and hand towels for the bathroom. Though it kind of feels like a hotel or Airbnb you will need all the essentials. While the website states that there is Wi-Fi and a tv for watching stuff, the Wi-Fi was not available while we were there. Also, the fold out couch was kind of falling apart. If you're going with kids they probably won't mind but if it's an all adult camp group the folks stuck on the fold out will likely not be thrilled.

Not to mention standing on sharp, larger rocks. No thanks! Pay attention to distance to the bathroom. We lucked out and I grabbed the site right across from one. Other sites were a LOOOOOOOOONG distance away. When we visited there was a group of cub scouts that rented a few sites. They clearly should have rented more as they had everything packed to the gills- cars along the narrow road, smaller kids wandering around the road unescorted, several tents per site. It made it super dangerous to drive anywhere because KIDS. WERE. EVERYWHERE! Amazing none of them were hit with the lack of attention mixed with how dark it gets. The campground needs to enforce a rule of X campers per site. I'm all in favor of people getting out to camp, especially kiddos, except when it hinders everyone else. They have a few timed group activities. This was great for my kids, but didn't last long enough and often started late. We arrived Friday around 4 PM. The jumping pad was open from 4 30 to 5 30. We start to unpack and I decide to take my kids to the jumping pad so they don't lose out on precious playtime. We arrive and it's still closed. Around 4 50 someone pulls up in a truck, unlocks it, and drives away. By this point there's a pretty big group of kids ready to play. I think "maybe they'll give the kids extra time at the end". Nope! 5 30 on the nose and the same person pulls up and shuts things down despite all the kids still playing. Along the same lines, they opened the pads up for a couple hours Saturday morning. A group of pre-teens and teenagers dominate the jumping pad to the point where all the littler kids can't use it. Maybe they need to have timed jumps limited to certain ages so everyone can get a turn to enjoy? To avoid injury I took my 4 year old over to the pedal cart track until you realize how hard they are to pedal. It was so bad I ended up pushing our cart up a hill because we were completely stuck. It looks and sounds like fun until you realize the carts aren't in pretty shoddy condition. For the relatively low price we paid, I think 40/night, the site was definitely worth it. If they could figure out a way to expand hours for the activities, it would greatly improve the experience for families with kids. I prefer to keep my kids off their technology while camping, so mingling with other kids through activities and games help to pass the time. The activity center was helpful in that regard, but having to trade your license for balls or whatever was a bit annoying when you were done and someone else wanted to play. Luckily everyone was cool and understood, but transferring equipment was a bit of an ordeal.

The owners were extremely friendly, nice, helpful, energetic, and excited to be traveling on their new adventure. They only started re-constructing this campground in November of 2021. There's a fair amount of muddy areas due to new construction and drainage issues which I'm sure the owners will address. All the sites have a good amount of space between them. Our site was one of the most level sites I've ever parked on. It is a pull through buddy site. The owner said that he just dumped and spread the stone the morning we checked in. The softness of the stone showed it was very new. It could benefit from a nice heavy machine running over it a few times. The bathhouse/showers were really nice and clean. The rec hall was nice. Instead he told me my rig was against the law because it wasn't Rvia certified. He threatened to kick me out five times but wouldn't right now. He asked me how much I paid for my membership which is none of his business. I have a higher tier membership but regardless he informed me that thousand trails doesn't like to sell to people like me when we were discussing full time RVers. The final time he threatened me I said if you are going to kick me out then do it but you better kick everyone else out who isn't RVIA certified. Again he said he wouldn't right now and that he just wanted to educate me on the fact I was breaking the law. He noticed another van near me and told me to come with him while he checked her. I refused but later spoke with her and she was in tears when he got done with her. After he left I looked at my membership and not being certified isn't against the law. It is recommended but not required. Chris also informed me not to go to any other thousand trail park in PA because they wouldn't let me in. I don't know if that's true but something to keep in mind. In some of the other reviews I saw that 10 years ago the bathhouse was under construction in the no septic hook up area. It is still closed due to construction in 2026. Of all the TT I have been to this has been by far the worst experience. Chris even mentioned that his wife wouldn't even camp at a place like this because she prefers nicer ones. That spoke volumes about the property he manages.
