Came here to get my husband's new uniforms spent almost $800 between tailoring and buying the actual uniforms you would think they would be nice and welcoming instead they were rushing us, and they were being extremely rude. So I am in no way, shape or form an expert on army/navy surplus supply stores. But we were in San Diego and on our way to Verbatim bookstore and decided to pop in. GI Joe's is a huge space filled with military items. They carried everything from MRE's to pepper spray to backpacks. Pretty much all of the normal selections you would expect to find in a surplus store. But what set this place apart for me is that they actually have a LOT of interesting, unique antique items as well. It's almost like half the ship is new stuff and the other half are antiques. They had actual artillery shells, vintage uniforms/helmets/hats, personal soldiers trunks, I think I saw a parachute on the back?! I came in today looking to find a medal rack to buy so I can recreate a family friend's uniform as a surprise. I saw a couple of premade sets in the front and one buried under some racks in a box was almost identical to the family friends rack ( I was going to get it and have someone change out the single wrong medal) and when I asked to see them a girl with the blonde hair took them out. I proceeded to ask how much it was and she said about 200 and when I reached my hand out to see it, she put the rack back in the case and left (she saw my hand and made eye contact as she left). I ended up leaving because she made me feel "unwelcome" after that. I drove an hour for nothing. I 100% don't recommend. It's so crazy to see that with one rude encounter, you can loose a customer who was about to spend 200-400 in the store. Maybe they played a little racial profiling game. read more

****THIS IS FOR ABC CLEANERS, LOCATED INSIDE GI JOE'S IN THE BACK*** So far, I've taken three DESIGNER ($500+ each) items in for dry cleaning. Mind you, I was super hesitant to do so at *any* cleaner near base. Each item (2 sweaters and a shawl/scarf thing) ran me $5 for clean/press service. ($15 total) AND, it was a mere 48hr turn around. WHAAAATTTTT?! Insanity I tell you! (Insanity, as in... amazing value! Like too-good-to-be-true value.) Parking is easy early in the morning, so long as it's not a Thursday. (Farmer's Market) They accept cash and card. IN REFERENCE TO OTHER REVIEWS: The workers have been nothing but nice and friendly. Bought a coat for a friend for $130 it said 46 L he tried it on and it was too small. I took it back with the receipt and tag still on and they did not do a refund. They did offer to buy it back and when they measured it it was a 44 R. They offered $20 even though I showed them the receipt with the tag on the coat. I do not recommend this place. You're better off going to the exchange and spending the money. read more

This place has been here for several years which is on a pretty busy corner. The location is great because it's downtown near a few dry cleaners and is even connected to a dry cleaning business that also does alterations. The surplus side is a little small but they also have a side that has a ton of shirts, hats and clothing for kids. They do have a lot of cool shirts but the prices a little high to me. The customer service is alright they will usually ask you once if you have any questions. I know I will be back because they have great deals on ammo cans. read more

I know this place has a lot of bad reviews, and maybe I don't use them enough to know but... we only had one issue with them. They put the wrong ranks on, but fixed it without questions or charging us. Other than that everything we've gotten fixed has come back fine. They also hold stuff up to a year I believe, no fees for it either. No the customer service is nowhere great, but I've had conversations with a few of them and it was just a typical conversation. Also not sure if it's the cheapest, but they know exactly what you need done without needing clarification. If something changes I'll update! read more

I purchased a Digital Desert camouflage Marine Corp boonie hat from this store last week. Price and selection wise for this product Gi Joe's was better than other similar stores in downtown Oceanside. However, the reason I am giving them 3 stars, I would give them 2.5 if I could, is for their customer service. I spent about 15 minutes looking for the hat before I asked for help, I was not greeted by the way when I walked in, but whatever. When I did ask for the help, the lady behind the counter huffed, put her book down, and then asked me what she could do. I told her what I wanted, when she again huffed, and walked over to a wall behind the counter and asked me what size I wanted. The 3 stars are because while she did provide me with decent service, it was by no means great, and in my opinion she did what was expected, but did not go above and beyond by any means. I also want to add that they more or less have an "as is" return policy. Meaning if you buy it...its yours, no returns. Its an average store with average prices is about all I can say for this place. The only reason I will be back is if I can't find what I am looking for at another store. read more

Best customer service I have ever received in downtown Oceanside. I walked in about an hour before they closed, needing my medals mounted for a funeral the next day. I had tried every other store and each one said the turn-around time was at least 2-3 days. I explained my situation to the gentleman in the rear and he must have been the owner because he got on his cell phone and called the mounting lady to come in right away. I came back an hour later and they were done. Crisp and professional to perfection, and not a penny more than what other stores were charging. They truly saved the day! Thank you GI Joe's. I was able to attend Officer Michael Crain's funeral the next day in my dress blues to honor a former Marine who lost his life protecting his community. As a person who spent four years living at Camp Del Mar, which is right outside Oceanside, I can tell you that since my dates of service back in 1975 - 1979 nothing at all has changed at Gi Joe's. The people who work there (especially the old women) are about the rudest, nastiest, no-personality, crotchety hags you'll ever meet anywhere. They act like life sucks and they absolutely want you to know it. Not to mention that everything in this place is overpriced by at least twice the prices you can find elsewhere or online. This store is full of crotchety old hags who I am pretty sure HATE the human race. First time I went here I was shocked at how rude this ancient witch of a woman was, that I vowed to never go back. Well, three years later I gave it another shot. Same attitude. It's really quite sad too, because their biggest market is the marines and service members stationed in the area, and for some reason they treat us like pure crap. My only guess is that they do this because they know they can get away with it. After all, they've probably been doing this for years, and if the age of the ill tempered old women is any indication as to how long they've been around, I would say they probably gave the same treatment to Dan Daly! The two stars are simply because they do have a lot of cool shit. If you can enter this store, look around, find what you want, pay for it and leave without having to even breathe around said old women, you might have a good experience. But dear god, DO NOT ask these women to sew on name tapes or mount medals for the ball!!!! They will have you leaving debating whether your next stop should be the nearest church to repent your sins. read more

I am not military, but am a big fan of military surplus stores, I can always find half a dozen uses for old military gear. I always seek out supply stores near military bases because they have the best gear. Not the boring knockoff gear every store sells but something unique. Twice I have been into this GI Joe's and twice I have left empty handed. Mainly because what they have that I would buy is overpriced. Or they have a shelf full of coyote brown MOLLE gear but the one thing I want they only have in woodland. It seems like they mainly do uniform services for Camp Pendleton so the surplus side is a side thought. read more

We walked in and there was TONS of inventory, so no need to worry about grabbing the last item. Over priced and crumbling gear. Very unhelpful and unfriendly crusty old men behind they counter. I asked to look at an item and the guy lumbered over as if it was the worst chore of his life. When they item he showed me was very damaged, I asked to look at other products and he said, "I'm not going to dig through this box all day with you." Keep in mind I am the ONLY customer in the store. The price on the side of the box said 19.99 but when I went to the counter it suddenly shot up to 29.99, even though the product was thoroughly used. Oceanside is full of surplus stores with better products and nicer staff. Avoid!!! read more
