These folks have been a landmark in the area for so many years. I remember shopping here over forty years ago. The options of items seems endless, and there is stuff literally everywhere (hint: look up, down and under when shopping!). It may be even that shopping here as a youngster, I may have been influenced to enlist (which I did and served in two services, time in service 10+ years). Their prices are good, folks running the place are friendly and helpful. Location is very easy to find, you cant miss this store. Plenty of parking out front and I LOVE this store! I always walk away with purchasing something even though i dont need anything. They have everything you need for the outdoors and for any military/tactical gear. They also have MREs to purchase. They are super friendly and i believe they have decent prices on their merchandise. I came in looking for "camping" chairs and hoping I can test them out. I found what I was looking for and a small portable lantern/flashlight. My husband went there for some shorts and pants. Came in last Saturday morning and met George who worked there and asked if he could help me. I asked him to point me in the direction of the knives and he did and said he would be right over. George was so enthusiastic that we were buying knives and helped us select one that was right for us and we needed his help because we've never bought a pocket knife before. We were buying knives because we took a 4 hour survival skills class in Pasadena the weekend before and were told everyone needs to have a good knife on them. One of my superintendents at work told me to get a knife from military surplus with a compass on the top and that comes with a stone for sharpening the knife. Unfortunately they didn't carry the compass knife but I was able to get a good one for under $30. I have to mention that we learned more from George in 20 minutes than we did in 4 hours at the survival skills class. He's very knowledgeable about knives, outdoor survival and camping gear. Honestly, we were 3 ladies and it's intimidating just walking into a military surplus store, but George made us feel really comfortable and he was really fun to talk to/learn from about knives and survival skills. He let us know we have to get really comfortable with using our knife like it's an extra limb that way we don't freeze up in case of emergency. We told him he needs to teach a class on this and have his own line of knives. I ended up getting a Marine brand knife, a sharpening stone and a whistle with a compass and a flint on it and it was worth it. read more

This place has a large selection of survival, camping and military related stuff. I am more into survival and camping. People that come in here are also very nice. The last two times that I was there looking at emergency food. People would tell me their recommendations. I have bought a lot of small things from here, including a green backpack, which I still use to this day. However, I do feel like some items are little bit more expensive than other places. But I enjoy looking at my options at a store. There are too many survival stores nearby. read more

My first time here and I wish it was a better experience. Racist and Rude Cashier killed it for my family and I. Mind you this is supposed to be a store that BODLY claims they honor those who serve; Even have it painted outside their building and I walk in with both my brothers who are in active duty. We ask the cashier what's their military discount and she says It's 10% with a mono tone and no eye contact. FIRST Red Flag. Fast forward we go to check out and when my brother gets his total he asked for his military discount. She must have thought he was lying by her TONE because she told him to pull up his ID ... mind you it was just the tone alone that set me off. He pulls it out and she aggressively says this should have been said from the beginning.. I told her to fix her tone and take my item off because someone who works in customer service shouldn't have her attitude and let her know it's our first and LAST time there. It could have been cause we're Latino and she was white too straight up. This was around 12:30 and she had her hair colored orange. The prices are highly priced too and we were only going to support them because they were a small business but at this point I'd rather go to Costco. read more

My 14 year old son recently asked me to take him to an Army surplus store, and I had to admit to him that the two I knew about had closed along time ago. When I was a kid, my grandfather, who retired from the Navy used to take us down to the Navy store in Long Beach, but I had also not been there in 20 years, and I don't think I could get in anyway, even if it's still there. Good old yelp to the rescue, I found M & I Surplus, read a couple of reviews, and headed out to the truck with my kid. We arrive to a building that was larger than I had expected it to be, painted taxi cab yellow from stem to stern. Just inside the door, I could tell that this was a combination of military surplus, along with some survival and camping gear. With the Covid fear waning, they seem to be blowing out some big things like 55 gallon water barrels, and some other items for survival. A full section of wool socks, and hats, a display of leather belts, MREs, jackets, hi-vis and camo gear, rope, camp stoves... there is a lot of stuff in here! Particularly Cool was a little offshoot on the north side of the store, that had some vintage military gear, and other items. Near the back of the store, there were several military uniforms, hanging on the racks, I learned later that some of these ostensibly were donated by individuals, who served previously, retired, or brought here by their next of kin. This is a very well organized shop, with just about everything you would probably ever want to find at a military surplus store. For my part, I have been back twice for some cold-weather gear, and a couple of items for our trailer - found what I needed both times. Definitely worth checking out. Oh, my kid found a cool canteen, and a couple of other items that he did not need but I suppose he wanted. Spend it on the ones you love, right? read more

I had to ask her if I was able to pay for my stuff. And has me do two transactions because she somehow didn't see the shorts right under the vest I just put on the counter. I was at the register waiting to purchase something and the cashier blatantly ignored me, they were on the phone texting for a long while. Then FINALLY they started ringing me up after their texting and made no eye contact still ignored me while talking to someone else. I had to initiate my existence and talked to the cashier to make sure I wasn't imaginary. They replied but still were so rude. Usually I have a good experience at this store no idea they hired rude people now. read more

I recently visited this store to buy my dad a Father's Day gift. He is an Army Vet and I knew I would be able to find him a gift here, which I did. With that being said, I went up to the cashier to buy my items and I said "hello!" to the cashier she did not even glance up from her phone. I waited about 30 seconds in silence and she then proceeded to ring up my items without even saying a word to me or even looking at me. She rudely asked DEBIT OR CREDIT, I answered. She bagged the items and handed me my receipt without even looking my way the entire transaction. Clearly whatever she was doing on her phone was more important than showing some common courtesy or any customer service whatsoever. The store has great items/selection of things but I will be taking my business elsewhere due to the flat out RUDE lady working at the front desk. read more

I really like that this place has everything military wise, but both times I've been there the cashier seems annoyed to have to help us. She has been on her cellphone when we came in and she is back onit as soon as she is done helping us. The selection is pretty wide. They have construction stuff as well. Please read before visiting M&I!!! Before I share my experience, I wanted to give a little backstory. This store is owned by Bud. He is an extremely kind and great man. Every time I go in I spend 300-400$. I go a couple of times per year so if you add it up you will see how much I spend here. A couple of years ago I found M&I through a friend and when I visited the store I saw that it had great and affordable military antiques. After going a couple of times I began to notice the attitude of a lady up front named Maddison( or Marie I'm not sure which is her name. She has red hair). Every time I ask her for something she sighs and gets it. In the process of getting it she throws it on the counter and walks away. The first time I stopped at the counter she waited 20 minutes before looking up and coming to help me with something because she plays the ignore game. She once told another employee that she hates her job. If you hate your job you should quit? Every single time I walk in with my dad, we end up leaving angry. The only reason why I go there is because of the prices. I Can never figure out why she's so cranky. Also, there is Buds son. He is usually nice most times but sometimes he lets things go. He once said "Wasted my F*ing time" after I told him I Didn't want a pin. He didn't realize I was trying to get past him after giving him back the pin. The other ladies are very polite. They always have a smile and appreciate the business. The greatest employees are George and another guy with a name starting with M. I Suggest they get a raise or promotion. P.S: I don't know if its a race thing or an anger problem. I saw another comment mentioning racism so maybe that's the problem here. To be honest, I am not a sensitive person. If I was I would have said something to Bud or have made a review sooner. I couldn't hold my frustration any longer after my last encounter. I recommend going to M&I for extremley affordable prices but be assured that you will be met with rudeness when you walk in, if you go one a bad day and those two are there. read more

I've been to this location several times in recent past. I've always come away feeling as if my patronage mattered, except for this afternoon. I walked into the store and went directly to the front counter. There was a lady behind the counter with her back turned working on a word puzzle. After a bit she asked me, while not taking her eyes off the puzzle, whether I needed something. I hesitated in replying expecting that She would turn around to face me. She did not look at me at all. The impression I got was that she did not appreciate being interrupted. I then greeted her in spite of the unenthusiastic reception she had provided. It was not until after my greeting that she turned her head to look at me (though, still with that unfriendly disposition). If management cares to review the video footage of this interaction, I believe they too might conclude that there is room for improvement in the lady's approach to interacting with paying customers. Always a pleasant and friendly crew to offer a helping hand. Just came from big 5 where I had a shit experience shopping for a folding knife. I came into m&i and looked at the knives for not even 10 seconds before I was offered a hand. George was great, he was more than happy to show off all the knives and had a few favorites to recommend. Aside from the HUGE selection of great gear, it truly has that local neighborhood business vibe. Not to mention the whole exterior signage is hand painted... just saying. This surplus store was established in 1967 and it is one of few surplus stores in Los Angeles county. Parking was super easy as they have a private parking lot. The store offers outdoor clothing (hats, gloves, belts, etc) / equipment as well as camping (e.g. bags) / survival supplies. I even noticed gas masks too, but the sign stating that the store sells gas masks as novelty items only and makes no claim relative to their workability or effectiveness. Unfortunately I did not spot many pre-built earthquake kits here other than one disaster survival kit box (one person with three day supply) and one pre-built bags. There are enough MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) and pouches of emergency drinking water to create DIY emergency kits. One of the employees was helpful, but a bit overly enthusiastic by my standards. It was also nice to see a section of the store selling various real / replica of military items from WWII and The Vietnam War. read more

Racist!!!! Never have I experienced the most rudest customer service from the "manager" !!!! Went in excited to purchase a few things for my daughter who's in the Force, ended buying a jacket for my husband, the cashier/ manager Marie was so rude didn't not even offer a bag to put the jacket despite the drizzling rain!!!! I went back to kindly ask for a bag, she gave it to me very rudely, didn't look at me in the eye, very very rude! Never stepping foot in there again!!!! Such a shame!!!!!! When I called to speak to the manager she said it was herself, wouldn't listen to my thoughts in regards our experience and how I thought she was being racist, was talking over me and hung up on me.
