Definitely one of the most random things I've ever seen in the middle of a city. This wasn't really on the top of my list, but was already near where I was so I figured I would stop by. It's....ok I guess? Maybe I would get it if I knew the history behind it, but other than that it was just a 'huh, alright' moment. It's in a small park, but the park itself was roped off so I wasn't able to get close to it. It's also a lot smaller than I expected. Don't go out of your way to see this, but if you like random art pieces, it may be more your speed than it was mine. read more

Walking through downtown Dallas, I turned a corner and suddenly--there it was. A massive, hyper-realistic eyeball staring straight at me from the middle of a fenced-in lawn. It was weird, unexpected, and honestly kind of awesome. The thing is huge--30 feet tall--and so detailed it feels like it's watching the whole street. I couldn't get too close since it's on private property and usually fenced off, but that didn't stop me (or half a dozen other folks) from snapping a few pics. It's a little eerie, a little funny, and definitely memorable. Not something you see every day--and for that, it's worth the stop. Four stars for being so strange it's cool. read more

I love campy stuff, so this is up my alley. I heard about this landmark, but didn't intentionally find myself here. I was walking around Dallas and there it was. This giant eye is definitely something to see. There is also an interactive aspect where you could scan a QR code and the eyeball comes to life. I don't think you could get up close in personal because, as I understand, this is more of an event space and a unique one at that. Definitely a place to stop by and take some fun pictures, but you don't need a lot of time if you're sightseeing or being a tourist for a day. read more

I saw the Giant Eyeball is one of the attractions you have to see in Dallas. After walking to the statue, I was disappointed. They have weird hours to see the Giant eye so if you miss it, you have to look at it through a gate. So you feel like you're looking at a zoo exhibit. The statue itself is not bad but it's located in a pretty rough spot. It's full of people begging for money and they will get nasty with you if you ignore them. I was convinced we were being followed at one point. If you visit the Giant Eyeball, keep your guard up. read more

Created by artist Tony Tasset, the 30-foot-tall sculpture is made of resin and fiberglass. It's a replica of the artist Tasset's own eye. He created the sculpture back in 2007. Tim Headington, the billionaire owner of the Joule Hotel next door, installed The Eye here on the former site of the Praetorian Building, which in 1909 was the tallest building in Dallas. Headington tore the Praetorian Building down to create this green park in 2013 and installed The Eye. It's privately owned. As it is surrounded by a locked gate, the best angle to get a photo if the gate is locked and closed (which is most of the time) is directly in front on Main Street. If you stand in front of the gate, you can get a good view of the eye and even take a selfie. It is a fun place to take a photo downtown, but it's completely surrounded by a locked gate and the doorman/security guard at the clothing store Forty Five Ten next door was about as obnoxious as could be. We were walking from Elm Street near the driveway entrance of the Forty Five Ten clothing store next door to get a better view from the gate and he started walking toward us, huffing and puffing and said "you need to go around the other side. No photos allowed. This is private property ". I'm not arguing as I'm sure he had a gun. We were literally on the sidewalk and staying in the hotel next door. In the meantime, we weren't dressed as much of a threat; I was in loafers and my friend visiting from Australia was dressed in Chanel. It's a pity because the "The Eye" is such an interesting attraction and would bring shoppers in for foot traffic, but I think they discourage it. The only way to get onto the lot in front of it if the gate is locked (which seems to be most of the time) is to go to a special event or to rent it out. read more

Yeah, that's creepy. There's a giant eyeball in downtown Dallas that seems to be watching everything that's happening around it. Yes, this sculpture is actually one of two with the other in Saint Louis. Tony Tasset is the artist and according to his statement, there is no deeper meaning behind the eyeball that is a replica of his own eyes. The eye weighs 18000 pounds and is currently behind a fence at the Dallas Art Fair. You can still see it from the front and from one side, but not the other side because the Joule Hotel is absolutely closed to the public and they will yell at you. Just a fun and wacky monument to drive by while you are in Dallas. To some, a funny and uniquely Dallas lanark, but to others, an eyesore

At about 60ft tall, it's something you'd have to see with your own eyes to really get the full effect and capture the detail. So this is cool and disappointing at the same time. It's a beautiful piece of detailed artwork..definitely fun to stare at. The problem is that it is on private property so you can't get close enough to truly enjoy the feature. You will be greeted by security who immediately who will tell you "it's private property, you can view from outside the gate". I definitely took a pic of reality vs social. I am going to be completely honest, I don't see the point of this sculpture. Was it cool to look at? Absolutely? Was it worth the walk down from the aquarium... no not really. It is behind a locked gate, so you are unable to get close to it. I found out after this is because it is on private property, but it is advertised like an artistic sculpture within the city when you look online. I was thinking this was going to be more like the bean in Chicago. I guess sometimes they open it up to the public, so maybe you can look to see if there is a time it's open when you stay, but I wouldn't plan a trip around it. Who doesn't love seeing a random giant eyeball in the middle of an open grassy field in the middle of downtown??? If you're not a fan of eyeballs, definitely skip this place because it will overwhelm you. One star deducted because the area was fenced off, so you can't actually get up and close next to the eyeball. There is also limited vantage points because some of the fenced walls are also hidden by planted shrubs.
