My husband and I got on the website to make sure it would be open on a Monday, and it said it was open until 1 pm. We then tried to call to talk to a real person, because we know that sometimes websites aren't kept current, and all we got were recordings. So we drove almost an hour to get there, and when my husband knocked on the door, he was told that the museum was shut all this week for roof leak repairs. They have plenty of staff members. Why couldn't they update their website or have a real person answer the phone?

When I first came to TPAS, I--like some of my fellow students--was determined to overcome some pesky anxiety symptoms; also, longing for more creative pursuits--all the while reeling from the pains of a dead-end, soul-crushing job. It took a little while for me to "come out of my shell," but once I did, I instantly responded to Bernard's mindfully-crafted approach to acting and "the business." While I had always dreamed of being an actor, I never expected to be taken seriously as one. However, as I began to redevelop myself (under Bernard's direction), I fell back in love with performing, grew more disciplined, and developed a newfound confidence and strong motivation to pursue a career in the field. Flash forward to today, I have TPAS to thank for the motivation and professional development that has helped me to book 2 commercials and regularly gets me called in for auditions. Scribe Video Center is a community oriented non-profit that focuses on training individuals how to…read moreproduce video. There are classes, workshops, equipment for rent, screenings, competitions, and much more. In comparison to so many other non-profits, their website is informative, up-to-date, and designed well. In my opinion, they have a lot of resources to teach students who are just beginning and provide an EXCELLENT learning environment. Once you become a mid-level producer, there is equipment that you may desire to rent for your own independent projects as well as some very interesting workshops. I did a workshop on how to do time lapse video using still frame images from a digital SLR camera. However, I'm only giving it three stars because my workshop was not well prepared. There were no materials handed out and everything that was discussed in the three hours could have been said in 30 minutes followed by a demonstration and a handout to take home. I'm sure that not all workshops are like this, but it was not a good introduction when the artist was well known for this technique. Plus, after looking in the production studios, their computers were older model Power Mac G4 towers and they lend Sony VX1000 video cameras (that model came out in 1997 as the first prosumer MiniDV camera). I will mention that they have a few new HDV cameras, but those are in limited supply. It is noteworthy to mention they have 16mm cameras, but then it is up to you to develop it and convert it to digital. At present they are starting to experiment with HD and I'm sure that much of their equipment will be changing over the next few years to accommodate this new work flow. In short, if you're just getting into video, this is the place you want to be. They can give you a community of artists and a working environment that is conducive to learning and project opportunities. However, coming at it as a higher level video producer, the opportunities available may not be anything that you're looking for. They're located on Chestnut Street in West Philadelphia. Take the 21 bus west and then walk one block north to 42nd and Chestnut. Or take the Market Frankford line to 40th and Market stop.

Gifted instructors and filmmakers concerned about aesthetics, politics, audiences and justice - what a combination! I love the social consciousness and the focus on the craft of filmmaking. Scribe just moved to a beautifully renovated new location. I will be back!

I just finished taking two classes run by members of the Philadelphia Sewing Collective, and what a…read moregreat investment they were! About two years ago, I purchased a Brother sewing machine for a ridiculously cheap price on Overstock.com. I had only used it to sew pillows together and nothing beyond that. I knew that I didn't even know how to use it to its full advantage, and there were even many parts on my own machine that I didn't understand the uses for. I decided to sign up for PSC's Basic Sewing Class, held from November - December 2008. I enjoyed the class so much that I also signed up for PSC's bag-making class that began right after my basic sewing class ended. Thanks to these classes, not only do I have a nifty pair of pajama pants and a sweet tote bag that I made courtesy of great instruction and a new set of sewing skills, but I know my machine inside & out now --- and I even want to invest in a better Kenmore machine after working for a bit on a Kenmore in one of the classes.
