My husband I ventured to GingeRootz for a nigh out-sans kids. We had a WONDERFUL time. Best feature about this place was the ability to enjoy the dinner, eat at a slower pace without feeling rushed by the staff. We like to really test the menu when we go to a newer place so we had two different cocktails, two appetizers and each had an entree. Everything came out beautiful and so full of flavor! Great service and wonderful combination of Chinese and Japanese foods on the menu. The egg drop soup, Hawaiian chicken and crab Rangoon's were amazing, I only give it 4/5 because I'm super picky about my sushi and mine did fall apart quite easily with a bit to sticky seaweed wrap. This was my second attempt to have dinner at Gingerootz. My first attempt earlier this year was a bust: they would not seat me because I was alone and claimed to be very busy, even though the couple that came in after me was told it would be 10-15 minutes and I had been told 40. Nevertheless, I had heard enough good things from friends and family that I decided to try it again. I went early on a Friday night, before the rush, and was seated immediately. However, the hostess did give me the once over head-to-toe look as soon as I walked in, and she didn't look happy that I was alone. I have now decided that she was solely responsible for my not getting a table on the first visit. I don't think she belongs in hospitality. Once I was seated, the service was EXCELLENT! Chaz was my server and he was very attentive and helpful with menu suggestions and any questions I had. I ended up ordering some sushi, which was good, but not as good as Koreana, and a build your own noodle combo. I ordered some wide noodles that I ended up not liking, and Chaz quickly got me another noodle style tossed in the same sauce. The food was well spiced, but I wasn't given an option on heat level. I asked for a to-go box and Chaz was prepared to box it for me, although I told him I'd manage it on my own. I also had a cocktail, the Shanghai Cosmo. it was delicious, but small and pricey at $8.00. Will I go back again? Probably not. It was good and the food prices are reasonable, but Asian Thai and Koreana are equally good, if not better, and I can dictate how spicy things get. I also know that I will be seated ASAP, even if I am alone. read more

Ambience, decor, wait staff (Clinton) are all top notch! we were treated with kindness and respect. To me that is at least half the dining experience. The food was really good... especially for Wisconsin. I like how they offer half size dinners, it was plenty for us. You cant beat this place, especially for the price. Started with some sushi which I didn't think was all that great but the mango sushi was great sweet but great. My girlfriend had the sweat and sour soup it was the best I've had. I had the Crispy Hunan Duck for my entree as it was recommended more than once on here and for good reason yum. We finished with the tempura cheesecake which was a lot like deep-fried ice cream. And I was able to get Kirin on tap. For my first time here it was very good I'll be back for sure. Variety is the spice of life if you haven't been here yet give it a try read more

I've gotten take out twice and was disappointed both times. The first time it was bland, But I thought that it have been an anomaly, so they deserved another chance. The second time it was just plain bad, Waaayyyy to many water chestnuts. Almost like eating them right from the can with a few peapods thrown in. I'm done with them. read more

I recently got back from a quick trip to wisconsin and am excited to review this gem of a restaurant. Coming from New York, and being an asian american, I've eaten a lot of great chinese food and this place is no exception! The decor is beautifully warm and inviting, as are the staff. The food was very tasty, decently priced, and the portion size was pretty large, which i was told is the norm in wisconsin? Anyway, here is a breakdown of the food I tried: chicken wings- hmm... extra crispy just the way i like them, with a hint of curry calamari- also fried with a delicious sweet and tangy dipping sauce filet mignon- cooked to perfection, literally melted in my mouth and swam in the most delicious sauce singapore rice stix noodle- very spicy curry powder! yum wonton noodle soup- good soup base, wontons done the traditional way with thin silky wonton skin, would have preferred with shrimp though and last but not least... GINGER FRIED RICE- sorry, i had to capitalize that just to get my point across... I HEART their ginger fried rice, my mouth is watering as i type... i would fly back to wisconsin just to order this rice, ok, maybe i'm exaggerating just a tad, but seriously, it's delicious! so, all in all, i would give it 6 stars if i could! will definitely be returning to this restaurant the next time I'm in town! read more

Always a favorite for Asian cuisine. Sushi is great, the crystal shrimp and Appleton roll are favorites. The bar is small but seating area is ample. Friendly staff and the wait is not too long. Non sushi food is flavorful and they have lunch specials. This is where I go with business clients and it's always been a hit. They also offer take out. read more

Various members of my family have been to GingeRootz several times and I have been there for both family dining and business lunches. I'm always impressed. I've tried several different things on the menu and never been disappointed. The atmosphere is "warm" and the service is good to great depending on how busy they are. The food though is always perfect. I think there is enough for everyone on the menu so as long as you like something in the general category of "asian" you will find something that will please. read more

The only really bad thing I could say was I had to wait over 5 minutes before a host saw me standing there. I decided to sit in the bar. It was a little small but very cozy. FYI on Thursdays if you sit in the bar you can get a massage and a drink for $10. The crab Rangoon was out of this world. Smaller portions but just enough for one person. I also had the sushi roll with mango and it was amazingly fresh. I am sad that in a week and a half of being here I just found this place and will be going home in 2 days. read more

Impressive from the time I walked in the door till I got my check. Staff was attentive and friendly to my requests. My food was very fresh and portion sizes were generous. Egg drop soup was just right not too salty. California roll tasted extremely fresh with some of the best wasabi I have had. Kung pao wasn't as spicy as I like but some srirach took care of that. The sauce had a slight sweetness but by no means sugary. Meat was also clearly fresh cut not "processed" Most options are gluten free or can easily be made so by just asking. Cost more than the average Asian restaurant but you clearly get what you're paying for. Highly recommended. read more

Enjoyed Gingerootz. The menu was diverse, decent wine choices. Tried the GR Sampler platter with pork egg roll, vegetable roll, satay chicken, beef skewer and crab rangoon. Enjoyed the Mongolian beef and their pad Thai chicken. I would recommend this restaurant. Service was average but friendly, just not overly responsive. read more

My grade for poor service is not due to the wait staff, they were always excellent. We went there to eat on July 3rd and were told as we entered that there was a $10 parking charge exclusively for that day so that people going to the fireworks didn't take up a space for diners. Since we were dining we just drove in and parked, the person watching the parking lot actually followed us into the restaurant to tell us that we had to pay for parking to assure that we were actually eating there and that they would refund the parking fee. Since we were already in the restaurant and about to sit down to eat it seemed ridiculous to me that I should pay a parking fee only to then have it refunded back after I ate. I stated my feelings on this but apparently they were so adamant about this policy (maybe they felt we would go so far as to sit down at the table and my wife and I would then sneak out the bathroom window) that they were willing to let a frequent diner walk out even though they recognized us from previous visits. Unbelievable, needless to say we will never dine there again. Update: 12/8/2112 -- Just wanted to let the owners know that we have not returned since the July 2112 incident and have made our thoughts clear to all of our friends who have since dined with us at other excellent establishments in the Appleton area. read more

Good happy hour -- everything you spend on drinks, you get in appetizers. Only issue is, they jack up the prices of both. Regardless, you get a glass of wine and an order of sushi or whatever for less than ten dollars. And the sushi is great. All the food is very good, really. And service has been great every time I've gone. I have never not enjoyed anything I've ordered here. The lack of seats at the bar and price are my only two complaints. read more

I wouldn't call this a Chinese restaurant...more of a mix of Asian foods, including Malaysian. The dining area is vibrant, though it looked like there was an area of private rooms and booths. The appetizers we tried included chicken and rice steamed in a lotus leaf...this was unique as the leaf imparts a nice flavor. My wife ordered shrimp with vegetables...the shrimp were large and perfectly cooked. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, too. I ordered a Malaysian curry. The service was very friendly, and they did a good job not rushing us out the door as some other restaurants do...we were allowed to linger after dinner over a drink. I recommend, in winter, that one request a seat far from the front door. read more

They have a great happy hour and delicious food. Atmosphere is good as well. Wish they would expand the bar as it gets crowded for happy hour. Good service, clean bathrooms and a good menu. Our office ordered lunch from there today and it was almost $100. One of my coworker opened her meal and found a staple. She called and was told they couldn't bring her a new one because they didn't have a driver. She drove all the way back there and was told she could have her money back or a new meal! The manager told her there weren't any staples in the food prep area so they didn't know how it could have happened (meaning she was lying, which she was not I saw it with my own eyes). It doesn't matter how it happened, it did and it was their fault. Terrible way to handle the situation. We will never be ordering from there again. read more

As a couple of vegans who live in San Francisco, when it came time to plan our wedding dinner in WI we did a lot of research trying to find any restaurant that even knew what vegan means. I emailed Doris at GingeRootz and her reply was prompt, helpful, and informative. So we booked the private room, sight unseen. I admit I was apprehensive- I expected the usual kind of midwestern style pan-Asian fare where nothing is really great or really, well, Asian. Wow was I wrong! The food was FANTASTIC! The menu is huge and varied (from egg rolls to sushi rolls to thai dishes; every stop along the way from vegan to meat meat meat); the dishes were tasty, filling, and huge- WI portions for sure. Everyone raved about dinner, which was an incredible feat given the number of very picky family members involved. The service was great. In fact, I would say it's better than most places I've been here in SF- because the smiles were sincere and gracious (it's a midwestern thing. We don't get that out here in CA- you get the feeling that the servers are smiling to get a tip, not because they are genuinely happy to see you.) Prices were so reasonable it kinda blew my mind when we saw the total for drinks, appetizers & dinner for 20. We will be dining here every time we go home to visit from now on! read more
