Went and saw Mc live tonight and the three comedians were spectacular. Laurent was probably my favorite but it was tough. The price of admissions is well worth it and think this is a great date night idea. Food comes from la Mexican next door. Came here for the 1st time. Seems like a great idea for our family, with 2 adult children and adult nephew visiting from the west coast. Bought tix ahead of time, but that didn't matter in terms of seating. Got here Right when it opened and the place was already 1/3 full. I really like the idea of having a local spot for live comedy, especially at a decent ticket price. Not a big place, but that's a good thing. 1st impression is that they need more wait staff (doesn't everywhere?). It was a good 25 minutes after we were seated before a waitress took our order. Another 20 minutes from ordering food and drinks for 4 out of 5 drinks to arrive. You get the picture. Now about the food and drinks.. Horchata was likable. Rum punch was meh. Food was decent, but not noteworthy, especially since it took nearly an hour for it to be served. Didn't realize there would be several comedians performing. The host actually did a skit and was pretty good. Next came a guy with a raspy voice. He was mediocre. Following was a tiny lady, who was introduced as a sort of regular performer. She was not funny. The headliner, thankfully, was better. Overall, it was an ok night. Would I go again? Maybe after I wait a while. read more

We were not sure what to expect at all, when arriving, but were so pleasantly surprised. The comedy lineup was so incredible that we laughed the whole time! The food and horchata were incredibly delicious! The chips and salsa were free and the salsa was so very flavorful. It was nice having pitchers of water on the tables which were constantly refilled. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. A portion of the proceeds from the comedy show are given to Montgomery county nonprofits. I highly recommend going here! read more

Give a Hoot is so fun! The premise is that they host comedians and they partner with charities, who then receive part of the proceeds. They also have the opportunity to talk with the audience about their organization. The space is set up like a typical comedy club. It's cozy, enough room to not feel like a sardine, though. We went on a random night, not even looking at the comedians, and we had a blast. Food is provided by La Mexicana next door. That is a separate review because I want to keep this 5 stars. Parking is easy. Check in is easy. Highly recommend for a laugh! read more

11.1.24 Give a Hoot Comedy Club is located in Shady Grove Plaza and is connected to La Mexicana Bar & Grill. There is a separate entrance (box office signage on the door) to sign in to the left of the restaurant. The comedy club partners with Montgomery County nonprofit organizations. A portion of the proceeds goes to these organizations. My employer had a show on 10/31-11/2 in which some of the proceeds would support our alumni association. La Mexicana serves food and drinks at the club. I ordered 2 flautas which came with beans and rice. It was average, not the best I've had, but our server was great. They have a battery operated candle that you could turn on to let servers know you need service during the show. What a practical idea! Venue likely holds up to 75 people if I had to guess. Since it's connected to the bar, it was loud. I really had to do focus on the comics so I didn't get distracted by the noise. The parking lot was full at 7pm when the club was scheduled to open with the show starting at 8pm. The lot was likely full from patrons at the restaurant. There is additional parking available in the lot down the hill. Although I wouldn't feel safe walking down there by myself at night. I'd come back here for a show, but likely grab a bite someplace else. read more

On the weekends, you pay for a ticket and half the proceeds go to charity. The food offered by the restaurant is decent Mexican food, with good portions, and the drinks are good and reasonably priced. The weekend acts change every week and are often folks from out-of-town. (OK, enough with the jokes about "I finally made it. I'm playing Gaithersburg!" Ha ha.). Some of the comics are better than others and some are consistent and others aren't. Some nights are much better than others. But standup comedy is a fascinating art form. It's not for everyone as a performer just as it's not for everyone as an audience member. This evening, we went to Open Mike night to support a friend trying it out for the first time. I think it's great that they offer this opportunity to new comics snd current comics who want to work on their material. The ticket price is zero and no one pressures you to eat or drink. I honestly don't get the harsh words about open mike night. Did some of it suck? Absolutely. Were some of the acts only mildly amusing? Yes. Were some of them downright decent? Yes. The intimacy. The power. The creation of a character. To be there to help someone experience that for the first time is, in a way, an honor. I'm not sure what all the hate is about in some of the other reviews. Whoever is responsible for Give-a-Hoot should be proud and I wish them continued success. I'll be back. read more

I love EVERYTHING about this place! * It's easy off I-270 or 355. * It's got free parking. * It's got delicious and affordable food and drink. * It's just the right size venue-- not too big or small. * The comic talent level is high. Generally, there are 3 or 4. Each has a different style. If you don't like one, a few minutes later, someone else will come on stage. AND... they donate 50% of the profits to area nonprofit organizations. From hunger to domestic violence to housing... It's SUCH a win/win for a fun and affordable date night or night out with friends! read more

Very memorable evening with a local comedian and hilarious traveling comedian from Michigan (by way of Indiana). Comedians change and the Professor we enjoyed and author of 6 books apparently only comes once a year. The Tex-Mexican food (we had fajitas, grilled steak, grilled shrimp, horchata, draught Modelo and a passion fruit margarita) was very good - served on very hot steaming plates. Very good waitstaff. Half the comedy proceeds are donated to local charities and they were selling T-shirts as well to benefit local schools. After the show, a lively bar is open in the other half of the venue. read more

My husband and I have gone several times over the past few years. We like the salsa and chips, and the drinks are good. I'm also a fan of the cheese and spinach enchiladas. We're so happy to have a comedy club near us. Thank you to everyone involved! read more

I put 5 start to balance the two and one star below because I think they were not fair. Maybe the open mics are not good, but you know what you are walking into, people doing comedy for their first time, or others trying new jokes. Many are going to flop. He sounds like a disgruntled comic who was not selected to go on stage. I have gone to many of these shows and the comedians have been (for the most part) very good. And money goes back to LOCAL Moco charities. I think the food is hit or miss also - I opt to eat elsewhere and just come for the show. The drinks I have found to be excellent. The venue will accommodate large groups, and I have never seen the "comedians " taking any tables other than a booth in the very back corner of the restaurant, so again, do not know what happened to the lady below... For a Friday or Saturday Night in Rockville/Gaithersburg it is a very good night out. read more

I decided to go to a comedy club for my birthday celebration with friends. I ordered five tickets in advance online, and I was super excited to go. When I got there a little after 7 o'clock, the entire place was full! I thought the doors opened at 7 o'clock as they advertise on their website, but they clearly opened doors earlier than 7 o'clock because all the good seats were taken!! We were seated at a table that clearly did not seat five people. When I informed Them that I had more guests coming, and that the table wasn't large enough, they said that they would bring an extra seat. And the person would have to seat with their back to the show while attempting to eat!!! However, I saw a table that clearly had enough seats for six people. Unfortunately, those seats were "reserved" for the talent two large tables, and they gave us the leftovers. That put a bad taste in my mouth and I don't think I'll be visiting again. However, the comedy was hilarious. The food was terrible. The drinks were OK. read more
