Yesterday, I went to Givhans Ferry State Park as part of my quest to visit all 47 South Carolina State Parks. GFSP was closer to Charleston than I anticipated, so that was nice. We walked the 1.5-mile nature trail that leads from a field, through the woods, to the river, back through the woods, and to another field. There were several hills on this trail which were fun to traverse. Bring your heavy-duty backwoods bug spray; the mosquitoes and biting flies are relentless and semi-immune to even large quantities of DEET. (Welcome to the Lowcountry, travelers.) We took out pup down for a dip in the Edisto River along the tube/kayak/canoe launch area. The little beach and river area were busy and full of people, but we still had a good time. I'd love to come back on a less busy weekend to relax in the river. Unfortunately, our dog had to stay on leash even in the river (according to posted signage), so that hindered her ability to water-retrieve. I noticed many campsites available for rent; we may look into this option for the fall. GFSP is an excellent option if you're looking for a fun day on the Edisto River.

Stayed in one of the cabins, basic amenities which was fine for us most of the day light hours were out on the River. Grilling out in the evening and sitting around the fire ring. Park is very clean and quiet.

Beach area - great place for skipping rocks, taking in nature, enjoying the view or even the sunset!

We love visiting this state park! There are many things to do including enjoying walking trails along the river, through the woods and throughout the park. There is a playground, a campground and plenty of space to get out and have some fun! It's a family friendly yet quiet place. Many enjoy swimming, boating and tubing during the warmer months. Great get away and not too far from town, if you need something. Definitely a place to visit!

Honestly I can't even really write a review about this place except that I was disappointed that I wasn't able to hike or even walk this place after hours of searching online for a good place to hike. Coming from California, there was plenty of places to hike that rewarded me with great views from mountain or hilltops so when i found this place, and the review mentioned it had a few different elevations, I was elated. My sister and I drove 35 plus minutes to get here, paid the entrance fee to only be chased out by the misquotes!! Not after 5 minutes of getting from the parking lot to the information cabin we were attacked by mobs of thirsty misquotes! Yes we're partly to blame for forgetting to spray ourselves but goodness gracious!! Even after the attack we still attempted to keep walking but eventually couldn't due to the continual attack. I was able to capture just a few photos. Perhaps we'll try again another day. We'll be sure to soak ourselves in misquote repellent!

    Awesome kayak launch spot!

What treat to find GFSP so close to mom's new house. I passed it on the way in from 95 and decided to check it out after a much needed after-Christmas-dinner hike. We popped over with some of the Fam & my pup Raj C. after reading there was a 1.5 & a 4 mile trail. Since it was winter and late in the day, we opted for the shorter trail. We were quite surprised to find several changes in elevation, which led us up to edge of the Edisto River and then to a lovely flowing creek, emptying over to the river. The trail circled around out to an open field we had seen as we drove in. The longer trail starts out across the road from the main entrance. You can see the trail head as you're leaving. I read about the boat launch online, so I wanted to check it out as well. We walked over towards the river and found an awesome launch area. There was even information about a paddle trail, which sounded pretty great. I would love to check out the river by kayak next time I'm up for another visit! There's a ton of picnic tables, playground, RV area, primitive camp sites and cabins for rent. There's a lot going on in this park, so it's definitely worth a trip over. It's $2.00 per adult and totally worry the cost.

Tubing, kayaking, and any other activities are great here. Bug spray is needed. Small charge to get in

Realistically, a five star rating is more a reflection of the fact that I want the space to remain…read moreas it is rather than an endorsement of the amenities provided. The worst parts of South Carolina are the overdeveloped ones. This area, being quite undeveloped, has many interesting sights, but also dirt roads, limited parking, and while I visited in the winter I expect the conditions can get quite hostile with the peak season bugs. I took the I'on swamp trail. I could not figure out what the name meant through a cursory online search, nor did any of the signage there clarify it for me. The trail takes one through a wooded area that used to be rice paddies; the organization of the ponds is still evident, but it's fascinating watching natural forces take over the area. There are a number of other interesting stops for outdoorsy types, most notably part of the majestic Palmetto Trail, but the most important thing is that it's not a golf course. Then again, it would be hard to build anything under the conditions in these swamps, and exploring the areas certainly makes one think about their history.

Palmetto Trail is a really nice trail, admittedly! You can tell that park management makes sure…read morethat the foot path is kept up really nice and that its wilderness is proactively cared for by volunteers and park service personnel, and not left for dead like I've seen in some remote state forests. I was really happy to be camping in a forest where there were no bears (YAY!) so that I could relax a bit and focus on the hike without one hand constantly on a can of bear spray. My initial plan was to hike the whole of the trail after having applied for a permit to hike and camp there, and having the permit signed and approved by the park service before I ever even boarded my flight to SC. So the only people who knew that I was there hiking on those dates were the park administrators who approved the permit. :) Yet about 4 days into my hike, at mile marker 10, around 1 o'clock in the afternoon, two hillbillies walked onto the trail carrying guns. It was 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Hunters don't generally start their day to hunt game at 1 o'clock on a sunny afternoon, and since I wasn't born last Tuesday I knew something in the water wasn't clean. Those damn city people, always glass half empty! So I went off trail into a dense thicket to just sit and relax, perhaps even camp overnight until I felt safe enough to move forward on the path of the trail that I was on (since I was alone). Because hunters with guns and recreational hiking trails go together like pet pooches and chocolate treats. Well, that relaxation didn't last long. Long story short, after somehow hunting and finding me in the thicket where I had gone off of the trail, then tapping on trees and instruments and whatever else they could find to make menacing noises (to terrorize me), those same two hillbillies then began to shoot rounds at me, chasing me back onto the foot path, where I then had the opportunity to take a photo of their Silverado "Hail the Confederacy" truck parked on the forest service road at the mile marker. So Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb chased me RIGHT to where they were parked out in the open so that I could get documentation of who it was that was CHASING ME THROUGH THE WOODS AND SHOOTING AT ME IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! (those pesky city folks always thinking all quick! aw shucks! thought all northerners was on cocaine!) They seemed to have really thought all of it through, for sure. Oh but THERE'S MORE! They then came bursting out of the treeline with both of their guns drawn, looking like "Yippie Kay-Yay MF!" as they ran all their jiggly x 2 to that confederate truck, peeling off like the final episode of the Dukes of Hazzard. I immediately dialed 911 as soon as they were finished doing doughnuts on the dirt road (ok the doughnuts in the dirt part is an exaggeration for the theater of it, but they should have just gone ahead and finished off with this move) and I immediately filed a report with the local Sheriff, though I ultimately ended up having to file a Hate Crime complaint with the DOJ since this incident occurred in a federal park. Additionally, I made an amateur short film about the experience HERE. youtu.be/8DqzB-1NNYU Please enjoy at my expense :)

I'll add that I wanted to rent chair and umbrella. I did learn you have to do that prior to going down to the beach because they are not able to read cards. It wasn't too crowded on a Thursday afternoon 3pm. My grand had a great time. The pier is about 2.4 miles down the beach and you can see it from the park. Life guard is on duty till 6:30 and they leave chairs and umbrella till about sundown. You can remain however long . They are currently 15.$ chair and 25$ for the umbrella. We didn't get anything from the snack bar so not sure what they have or prices. Plenty of parking it seems at least at the time I went and it was $15 and I was told I could come and go with my receipt. There is a ramp for handicap accessibility . It was a very nice day trip.

There is also a state beach park on the south end of Folly thata really nice with showers, rest rooms, gift shop and etc. last best thing about Folly is they allow wind shades such as Shibumi.
