When I say Gizzelle and her team are the best, they are hands down truly the best tailors in Atlanta. I called maybe two weeks out from my multi day, many outfit Indian wedding in sheer desperation. I had received 5 or 6 outfits from albeit high end designers that just didn't get the measurements right. They needed to be taken in, hemmed, tops needed to be entirely reconfigured. Gizzelle and her team meticulously worked with me to make sure I felt good about the potential alterations they were going to do, even making suggestions I wouldn't have thought of but would make the garment sit better. They turned around 7 or 8 outfits in just a couple of days for me, and I even brought them two additional ones which they turned around overnight and it was extraordinarily reasonably priced. I don't know what I would have done without them because some of my most important outfits needed some serious work, but every single thing turned out as if it was made for me. My wife got her wedding dress alterations done at Gizzelle James Couturiere. Gizzelle James did a fantastic job. The pictures speak for themselves. They really gave my wife curves and accentuated her hourglass shape. My wife didn't want to drive "too far" (e.g., Sandy Springs) for all of her dress fitting appointments. Gizzelle James is located in Midtown, directly above longtime restaurant Babs and two doors down from 26 Thai Kitchen & Bar's Midtown location. Gizzelle James' storefront faces Juniper St NE. The house/building is adjacent to a surface lot which you have to pay to park in. If you're familiar with Babs, it's the same parking lot. One of the best things about Gizzelle James is they kept my wife's wedding dress safe for *over two years.* The reason why they kept it for over two years is because our wedding was delayed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My wife said Gizzelle James was excellent. Gizzelle was present at every appointment. Daniel, who I met when we went to pick up the dress, worked the front of the house. There were also seamstresses who worked behind the scenes on-site. Everyone was nice and did a great job. I also have to mention Missy Couture, Gizzelle's dog, who spends time in a purse on a table by the front desk. FYI- I DID NOT GET MY DRESS DONE HERE-- I did a consultation, got a quote, and this is my review of that after getting a second opinion on my dress. First of all: I asked for a ball park price twice and was told they'd give me one after seeing pictures but did not- I decided to go in anyway as they had great reviews. They found about 10 things they were going to do to my dress, and the cost was going to be 1,405- which included a rush fee since I was coming in 11 weeks before my wedding instead of 15. I decided not to go with them after seeing the price and was charged a consultation fee (plus I had to pay for parking) of $80. I understand that they did all the pinning but after looking at me in the dress they should have given the promised ball park beforehand or at any point while asking me if I wanted certain things done. I even asked how much things would cost and they put off telling me- just saying "he'll calculate it in one second." After going to another well renown seamstress, she gave me a ballpark over the phone after I explained what needed done- when I got there she inspected me in the dress, and then gave me a price of $600. I mentioned some of the other things gizzelle was planning to do and she was confused by them. She only needs to see me 2 times, and is going to finish in 1.5 months with no rush fee. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure those other things would've improved the look- but they were not necessary-- they were going to need to see me like 4 times, and their turn around time was insane compared to many other places I called. But honestly what makes this a 2 star and not a 3 star review is that after I decided to go somewhere else their whole demeanor changed and they seemed annoyed with me? I was told that was just the going rate for them and that they couldn't think of anyone to suggest to me? As if 1405 was like a normal price, and anywhere else would not be great? As if it's not reasonable to not want to pay more than I did for the dress for alterations. Anyway: I'm sure their work is great and if you're super intricate about what you want done and don't care about costs go for it-- I just would encourage you to know the costs up front- ask them to tell you what things cost before they start pinning, and have an idea of what other places would charge and do first: other places will give you a quote without charging you for coming in. read more

My first experience was for my mother of the bride dress with a somewhat complicated bodice that needed to be taken in. Other alteration places wanted to sew up the sides, which would have fit all wrong. Gizzelle James worked with the design to get my dress fitting me perfectly! I've done some sewing, so I know it was not an easy task. Given that, I felt the charge for the alteration was very fair. My daughter got a beaded wedding dress sample and had Gizzelle James take off the sleeves to make it sleeveless, sew up the front bodice slit, repair the beading, hem it and put in a bustle. In other words, restyle it. It was a process, but my daughter and the women at Gizzelle James hung in there. The result was a stunning gown in which my daughter could move freely and enjoy the wedding celebration. I went to Gizzelle to have my wedding gown altered. She came highly recommended from two bridal shops I went to, and her alterations did not disappoint. The gown fit beautifully. My gown, however, was stained while in their possession. It appeared as if someone got blood droplets on it, then attempted to clean it, leaving a brown discoloration about the size of a silver dollar. No one from Gizelle's shop even mentioned the stain to me; I discovered it about 10 days before my wedding when I took the gown to be pressed. After calling the shop to express how upset I was about the stain and the lack of communication about it, I was told they didn't notice the stain and offered an apology. As I mentioned, someone clearly tried to CLEAN the stain, so of course someone noticed it. I made this point to them, and they again apologized. That was it. They did not offer to pay for a cleaning, refund any of my payment, nothing. I'm very disappointed with this shop. They are clearly good at what they do, but really dropped the ball when it came to rectifying their own wrongdoing. I won't be returning. read more

She's closed on Sunday and Monday and I was leaving Tuesday morning at 7 am. This is not only an endorsement from an extremely satisfied male customer, but also a call to all the men out there who are settling for not looking their best when Gizzelle's talent and value can be found so easily at her highly accessible midtown studio. The value: Want a tailored-looking sport or suit jacket without paying crazy prices? Guys, you can find blazers and sport jackets at vintage clothing stores (e.g., Lucky Exchange, Stefan's, etc.) for $25 dollars that are timeless and even better than what you can find at Macy's or Urban Outfitters. Just make sure the jacket fits well in the shoulders and chest. Take the jacket to Gizzelle to have her take in the waist of the jacket (somewhere between $40 and $55 dollars from my experience) to fit your exact body type. Come back a week later or so, and you will discover the immense pleasure in owing a custom tailored piece. Not only is it something you found that is unique and classic, but it will fit you properly and set you apart from the rest of the guys out there. What's best: you will have only paid something like $80 total when a similar, one-of-a-kind piece could cost you $300 or more elsewhere. The talent: It doesn't take much driving around in Atlanta to notice that there are tons of dry cleaners who offer alterations services as well. One could think that such clothing services would be sufficient because they might superficially take care of what you need (i.e., hem those pants exactly where you asked them to) however there is more to the story. Utilizing the talent of Gizzelle James will set you apart from those who use basic alterations services at a dry cleaners. At Gizzelle's, you receive the most accurate and up-to-date stylistic advice on where your trousers' hem should be placed based on fabric, occasion for wear, and your preference of shoe. How trousers break at the shoe (assuming any break is advisable) can make those suit pants, golf slacks or favorite jeans look perfect. Based on my experience, her knack for stylistic advice extends to the rest of a man's clothing ensemble as well. As a disclaimer, there may be some of you who are worried about yielding some control over your sense of style. However, one of the main things I like about Gizzelle is her ability to help guide if you want her help and advice, yet she has shown me that her priority is making me look better, not making me somebody I am not. The accessibility: Did I mention the abundant, free parking just 25 feet from her door? I absolutely love the fact that I can make it in and out of her studio within minutes. The bad: If I had to say anything bad about Gizzelle's studio, I would say that her increased popularity means it is advisable to make an appointment instead of relying solely on walking in. I can't tell you how amazing Gizzelle and her staff are without telling my whole wedding dress honor story. So I live in Bham, AL and when I got engaged I looked at wedding dress boutiques close to me but all the dresses were big Cinderella ball gowns and that is not my style. I started researching styles, designers, materials, etc and found the designed Leanne Marshall (ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER WORK). The closest store that had her designs was in ATL so I went there and bought my wedding dress. When it came in, I had been referred to a seamstress in my area that was supposed to be really good. I made an "appointment" with her but when I pulled up, she was in a shed out behind her house. I took all of my garments in and decided to give it a chance and when I came out of the dressing room with my wedding dress on, the first thing out of her mouth was, "Oh! You're wearing that??" And not in a good way! She continued to talk about how she expected a big ball gown and that she was shocked that I would choose a dress like the one I chose. I didn't know what to do so I just stood there and when she started pinning the dress she would pull on the lace and the skirt and pinned the skirt too short. She almost ripped my dress a couple of times and then she continued to step/walk on the train. I started crying and she was like "You look unhappy and I don't think think we're a good fit." The lady I tried to hire to alter my dress broke up with me and then blamed me saying that I needed to lower my expectations and a whole bunch of other stuff. She insulted me and my dress from the second I walked in to the second I walked out! Fast forward to me calling Gizzelle begging for her to squeeze me in! She went beyond any and every expectation I had and I cannot thank her enough for making me feel like a princess on my wedding day! She spent hours with me and welcomed me with open arms the second I walked in! She was appalled when I told her my story and made sure I was comfortable with all the alterations they wanted to make. I was working with a very tight budget and she was able to help me in that aspect also! I was referred to Gizzelle from a number of people, including those on Yelp. I'm not normally the type of person to write a bad review, but I can't in good conscience recommend that people do business with this establishment. In fact, I feel compelled to warn you about this business. I came to Gizzelle to get two suits tailored, and prepaid for them to be altered for $400, which comes to an expensive $200 per suit. That said I was fine paying it, because she did come highly recommend from people I know. I paid up front, to pick up two weeks later. I come back to pick up my suits, and I'm told "we forgot to charge you" for one of the suits. I am now forced to pay another $450 to pick up my two suits. That is exceeds the value of the most expensive suit! I haven't felt hustled in a long time, but I felt exploited. Although her work is of above average quality, but how can you trust someone who does business this way? If I had something really important like a wedding dress to be altered, is this how you would want to be treated? Looks like I'm not alone in seeing this side of the business. Read the other negative reviews on here closely. There are plenty of other Tailors in Atlanta who will do good work, at a reasonable price, with honesty and integrity. Gizzelle and her team heavily altered an Express tux that i bought for next to nothing but that looked like the opposite of Chris Farley's infamous fat man/little coat bit. In other words, it swallowed me, but i really liked the finish. I spent about the same on alterations as i did for the jacket and a pants, and left with what might as well have been a Marc Jacobs tuxedo (and you can call me Marc Jacobs when i wear it, too. I got tons of compliments). It takes a lot to trust someone with that large of an undertaking but they killed it and I'd highly recommend them for any guys out there that can't or don't make a habit of having suits built from the ground up. Buy that cool but fat-man suit that's on mega-markdown just to get the fabric and let Gizzelle build you a custom get-up. If you have really nice clothes that you need altered and really don't want to take chances, check out this place. It says a lot that a lot of anxious brides trust the experts here with their gowns. I had a really nice dress with a lace hem that couldn't just be hemmed from the bottom, so I decided to visit Gizzelle James Couturiere (rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?). This place is one of those house-turned-retail buildings on Juniper. There is a private lot next door with ample parking. Pass the salon on the first floor, walk up the stairs and make a hairpin turn. The shop is in the far right corner. I went without an appointment, and I found that the door was locked. I knocked on the door, and saw that they were taking up most of the space for a bridal appointment. Luckily, I was able to change in the bathroom, get pinned quickly and head back out. Next time, I think I would make an appointment. I don't think Gizzelle herself was there - there were two other very pleasant ladies there who helped me. The turnaround was about a week. I think I could have had it done sooner, but I was not in a hurry. It definitely was a pricey alternation, but the lace was sewn back together by hand, and the finished product was perfect. The ladies waited until I tried it on at pickup time to cut off the excess fabric. All in all, very pleased. Glad I trusted them with my dress! read more

Every so often, a service comes around that is truly exceptional---a service that leaves you embarrassed that you ever gave five stars to anything less. Gizzelle James Couturiere is such a service. I had a suit that was absolutely unwearable. I had purchased it from a made-to-measure internet store which apparently got the measurements completely off. The crotch was so tight I looked like Ricky Martin. The shoulders on the suit ended about an inch and a half after my shoulders did. Meanwhile, the waste curved inward, giving the suit an oddly feminine look. The whole thing gave the distinct impression that I had somehow stolen it from a female linebacker. I took it to Gizzelle, and within 3 days I had what is now the sharpest suit in my wardrobe. The entire alteration took three days to complete. I made an appointment for a Monday, telling Gizzelle that I was leaving for New York that Thursday. Two fittings later, I picked the suit up Wednesday evening. Gizzelle made it happen. The one thing to know is that Gizzelle's work does not come cheap. In fact, it's extremely expensive, costing as much as the original suit. But the quality of workmanship is fantastic, well worth the expense. If you need pants hemmed, take them to the cleaners. If you need a suit transformed, take it to Gizzelle. read more

A few things to know: * Gizzelle's studio is an easy walk from the MARTA Midtown or North Avenue station. I first worked with Gizzelle when she altered a huge, purple bridesmaid's dress for me a few years ago.She handled it as if it were a designer gown and brought it down to size with time to spare -- not a small feat. This year, I came to her with two on-the-cheap vintage dresses; one would be my wedding dress, but I wasn't sure which. Both were huge (huge!) and needed a lot of work. Again, she treated me and the old, delicate material like precious objects; she pinned both so I could get a better idea of how they would look. Over a few months -- I brought the dresses to her way in advance -- I'd pop back in for another fitting or to see a new detail. Each time, everybody there, even the customers I ran into, were kind and full of ideas. The dresses fit fabulously, as if they'd been made for someone my size. My hard-to-fit husband also took his suit there for some pretty significant alterations, and those came out fantastically, as well. In the end, I went with Dress #2, a blue strapless number that Gizzelle had rebuilt perfectly. She'd also procured a great teal blue ribbon for the waist, which was a surprise detail everybody seemed to love. Day of, my mom ended up resewing the zipper -- it seemed like it hadn't been reinforced at the top. Still, it was a small thing, and an easy fix. I brought a dress to Gizzelle awhile back for some last minute wedding alterations; the thing fit me like a sack when I brought it in but in just about a week's time I got it back and it fit perfectly and looked great! Easily the best looking dress in my entire closet. I was especially surprised by how quickly the alterations were done. I would definitely recommend bringing your clothes here if you need 'em fixed up. read more

Gizzelle and her team do awesome work! They are the only place in ATL that I trust to do my alterations. I've had a blazer, pea coat and a skirt altered by them and all items came back perfectly! My last alteration with them was of a skirt that I needed for a job interview and they went above and beyond to finish the alteration early so that I could have it in time. Just have to update my review and let everyone know that Gizzelle moved to a new location on Juniper Street right next to Mitra and above Babs! The space is much larger and it truly feels like a clothing designer studio! Again, Gizzelle and crew are the best and I always get complimented on how amazing my clothes and jeans look.
