The history though is what makes it unique as it is the wooded grounds around a former tuberculosis sanatorium with cultural remnants from the days when it served Dane County residents. You can find old cement ponds that cascaded down into what is now the parking lot, an old hog barn foundation in the middle of the woods, and more. There are two kiosks on the east and west sides that provide information on the history and current efforts to restore the woods to native species. The host was very friendly and helpful with the 411. The sites are close enough together that it doesn't feel very remote though. Unfortunately, it was very extremely high temperatures so I didn't get to explore the hiking trails. But the beach and amphitheater were definitely worth checking out. Educational programs and food truck Saturdays. Wi-Fi is a little spotty so they recommend cash. The grounds are very clean as well as the restrooms and showers. Definitely feels like you're someplace else even if you're from the state of Wisconsin.

The good: +The Campground is wooded, which is our favorite type of campground +They have showers +The bathroom with the showers was kept impeccably clean +You are in pretty close proximity to shopping (15 minutes or so) so if you find you forgot something, you don't have far to go The less than ideal: +Our fire ring was in rough shape with a big hole in the grate over the fire which made it difficult when making pudgie pies +The women's pit bathroom near our campsite had a burnt out light which I discovered after dark when I needed to go. It was the last time I used that bathroom and instead walked or drove up to the flushing bathrooms near the entrance +The lake itself was full of algae and kinda stinky in spots. Not a great place to swim or really enjoy the water in any way. +Due in part (I'm sure) to the stagnant water nearby, the mosquitos were plentiful All in all, I wouldn't likely camp here again but enjoyed sleeping in the woods none-the-less!

So I'm writing this review from the perspective of a dog mom, and I think this park was a total let…read moredown for bringing your pup. We came here to visit due to its proximity to Madison and the fact that they had a dog beach. Sounds great. We parked somewhat near the beach and it's a short walk to the (very small) dog beach. Madison lakes in general are pretty gross, but today this one had a large amount of still water and algae, so wasn't really looking to stay here very long based on that. Figured we'd move on to a hike once my dog got his dunk in the water (which does kinda require a bath as soon as you get home). The trail by the dog beach then continues in different directions from the dog beach, but there are signs saying no dogs allowed. So you're kind of trapped in this small area. It was a warm summer day when we came here, so walking in the open blazing sun was not sounding great. We drove around the park to different trails trying to find something shaded and more than a quarter mile, but wasn't having much luck. The only wooded trail that was about 1.2 miles was the White Oak Trail, which looked amazing, but that trail doesn't allow dogs. Overall, I'd argue that this is not a very dog-friendly outdoor area and not worth the trip. Again, this review is solely for those visiting with their dogs, but who wants to go on an awesome outdoor adventure hike without man's best friend?

We went cross country skiing with rentals from Nordic Specialists located in the Evergreen Shelter next to the Evergreen lodge. Entry is with a fee or free with your purchase annual WI State parks pass. Not too far from the city, this place has the solitude and nature getaway not too far from the city. Xski rentals were $30 for classic ski that came with shoes poles and skis for two hours. It's also nice in the summer for getting a hike in whether you want a short one or a challenging long hike. There's also an observatory tower you can hike up flights of stairs for a nice view! The evergreen lodge is new and spacious to stay warm during the winter or cool in the shade in the off-winter time.

I love this park tucked away in Monona. The park has roughly 56-acres that are laid out along a…read moreglacial drumlin, or small hill, not far from the eastern shore of Lake Monona. There are paths leading through woodland, savanna, and, most notably, ponds and marshes that are home to a wide variety of waterfowl. We love going for a walk or jog here when we don't want to travel far. It is a wonderful spot for a quick escape from the noise and distraction of the surrounding urban environment.

This trail is an excellent alternative to the longer, more strenuous nearby Scuppernong Trails just…read moreeast of here. But unlike those color coded trails, there's more to see along this 1.2 mile trail. Some of the springs are just mesmerizing. Seeing water bubble up from underwater sands is almost hypnotic. Other springs flow out of the ground and hillsides. Although shorter than even the shortest of the neighboring trails, definitely plan on spending an hour here, you'll be stopping often to take in the many features along the trail.

The Scuppernong Springs Nature Trail, across from the Ottawa Lake Recreation Area check in, is an…read moreeasy hike featuring dozens of natural springs, and the remnants of an old marl works plant. Differing from the other more wooded Scuppernong Trail, the Springs Nature trail is unique in its spring features and history. Check out the self guide for an explanation of natural springs, the marl plant and hotel, and the Native American settlement previously here. http://dnr.wi.gov/files/PDF/pubs/pr/PR0230.pdf The springs bubble up through the sand like something out of the movie the Labrynth, and also flow out of the hillside. It's a really unique feature. This is an easy unique hike that the whole family can enjoy.
