As is the glass museum across the street, this museum is free to visit. The exhibits here are world class and include a massive array of art over a 4,000+ year time frame. We also enjoyed the sculpture works outside the museum. I mean, who the hell doesn't want to get on a huge tire swing, play musical instruments or lay on a hammock made of glass?! I didn't know too much about the Great Lakes so I thought I would visit this museum. The museum…read moreconsists of two parts: an indoor museum that is semi-interactive. There is a series of non-stop videos on the Great Lakes, maps, history, gift shop, etc. Everything is labeled and explained. The second part is the ship - Colonel James M. Schoonmaker. Both are self-guided tours. The indoor museum will take you about an hour if you read everything and see some of the videos. The ship, however, will take you at least an hour plus depending on how depth you want to know about the ship. The ship has two levels; bottom level is where the engines and storage are located. The top level is the deck that leads you to their living quarters. The living quarters is two stories with no elevators. The bottom level is accessible only by a steep, narrow iron ladder.

I wish they gave a little more information and explanations on some of the placards but over all its an alright way to spend an hour. I have always loved ships. I've toured a handful of historic ships over the years. U.S.S…read more Constitution? Check. WWII submarine? Check. Mid-19th-century schooner? Check. Early 20th-century Great Lakes freighter? Hmm... So perhaps this ship does not have the romanticism or historical significance of the others. It is an impressive sight, quite long and stolid. In operation from 1911 to 1980, it was the largest freighter in the world when launched and set some cargo records during its first few years before being eclipsed by ever-advancing technology. It was also well known for luxury which supposedly rivalled the famous trans-Atlantic liners. Up to the modern day it is recognized as a relic of the so-called Golden Age of Great Lakes shipping, but although I respected its achievements, I couldn't quite conjure up the reverence and awe that it seemed to be asking for. Obviously the ship has seen better days, but it could be spiffier. Many spots need a buff with Rust-Away and a new paint job. In any case, this would be a fun place to take the kids, and frankly it's one of the few things worth doing or seeing in Toledo.

Now if u want free parking you may have to walk a bit. Parking will run you $10 during special events, $5 during regular days. The stadium is a nice size with plenty seating. I saw lots of concession stands that seem to have domestic beer and simple drinks. Hotdogs etc that you would expect for baseball. We had paid for VIP access and there are several VIP areas upstairs with plenty of seating. We came for beer festival n felt it was a great venue.

They have a large selection of glass artwork and items for sale. The problem with the gift shop, it is extremely pricey! I expect some of the glass items to be expensive, but I could find no inexpensive items anywhere in the store! Moreover, I have shopped in a glass studio in Toledo that had much more reasonable prices for their glass items. I understand I am sure these sales benefit the museum and I do not begrudge them that, but have some things on the cheaper end as well.

I understand that that's how the space operates, but even after one employee came up to us, more just kept coming! We really didn't have a chance to settle in with our stuff as we felt a bit pressured to get our food before anyone else could say something to us. I think instead of having reserved signage on the tables, it should say "Dine-in customers only" to reduce any confusion. I was already confused on it saying "reserved" in the first place, but luckily a friend who'd been there before explained it to me.

Every part of the museum is well-curated, clean, and fascinating. I wanted to try the little old-school diner car inside the museum, but it closed right before we went to eat (that was my fault, but note it closes at 3pm.) However the other cafe was nice for a cookie and coffee break! The special exhibit on fabrics was OUTSTANDING. I love how it was approached through a historical lens of both fabric innovation and fashion together. The variety of time periods and examples blew my mind. Seriously well done and I've been to a lot of museums around the world. This exhibit alone is one of the best I've seen. We spent the better part of a day just inside the museum. If we wanted the outdoor portion, that's another $40...so yeah; this is probably more worth if you have 5 hours to spend here. We had 2 hours, and we rushed through the indoor museum - did not get many chances to read through/watch the video at each exhibit. 2.5 hrs would prob be enough. I did really enjoy the short bit of history I learned from the Rosa park bus exhibition. The lady there was really good at telling the history/sequence of event. The trains, president cars, airplanes, race car, etc were all very cool to admire - and I'm not much of a car person.

My husband found it and what a gem it is! They are currently showcasing art by sophomores in a local high school (Huron HS). Their project was to showcase African American history and they did it through art themes of Unity, Peace amidst Chaos, Community, Adversity, Music, Adinkra symbols, Struggle, and Honor. I was amazed at their artistic skills and depth of interpretation of their feelings. The most exciting part is this Museum offers a tour of part of the Ann Arbor Underground Railroad Sites and Black History! We can't wait to do this! I love and am always so encouraged to see the resilience African Americans have shown in calamity and the hope they showcase that can only be found in God's strength. The employee was very nice and helpful! I highly recommend coming here to learn!!

They do a Journey to Freedom bus tour where you visit undergroud railroad spots (complete with crawling into hidden rooms) includng the building where Michigan abolishionists oporated a hidden press to publish anti-slavery newspapers. The tour includes spots Yspi and Pittsfield Township where the stationmasters are buried as well. They have tours of the historic home where the musuem is located as well, though this is decidedly less dynamic. I heard from a student that when she was in high school the musuem did a whole program for them at the school for AA history month, this seems to the musuem's main baliwick, other than the bus tours. Recently the musuem has been hosting jazz dinners, I think as a fundraiser. I haven't been but a friend went and said it was "lovely."

Things to do along I-75 N/S to and from the Detroit area (2 of 2)…read more I had to slow down the clock and spend a little time here. The real destination was Detroit. That said, I had coffee at one place, ate a meat loaf lunch at another, pawed the car windows and did some test sitting at a few dealerships, drove around the University of Toledo campus (which I didn't know is a very good school for STEM disciplines), and put the cherry on top of these few hours by visiting the Toledo Botanical Garden. I walked the garden and took photos. It was warm and humid, so I didn't really relax and sit a spell. Like many public gardens, the Toledo Botanical Garden, out toward the western end of the city, mixes up formal garden spaces with European cues and more organic spaces, meaning they are natural in affect and display very little rigid planning. I was fairly amazed how, as you moved along, these different vistas came into view. Everything was cohesively put together and you could enjoy the different environments they've curated for you. The Toledo Botanical Garden is part of the city metro park system, which I learned from other reviews. Thus, being under this umbrella might mean that the park is free of charge ... and it is! For this aspect and for delivering more than I had expected, having pulled it from a "top things to do" list, I believe the Toledo Botanical Garden handily earns 5 stars.
