FTR, baby!!! The…read moreValentine Theatre is a staple in downtown Toledo. The ambiance exudes history and culture - the massive mural in the entrance depicts theatre performers from 1895 to 1920. It's painted by Paul Geiger, a Toledo local and someone my parents know. :) Unfortunately, the theatre was under renovation for much of my childhood and I didn't attend many performances here, but nonetheless, this place rocks! I recently got to return for a friend's wedding and it was the perfect venue for it. They opened up the theatre for guests to walk around and check it out and the reception was held in the mural room. The area around the field has really grown so much it's gorgeous! There is so much to offer before and after the games too. We got great seats next to the dug out which was prime viewing for all the action. Although we didn't get any baseballs :(. I do wish their other screen was up and running as the only one on I had to keep looking over to look at. Their Fourth of July fireworks show on the 3rd was epic! I would like to say though to bring earplugs, the acoustics made them so LOUD.

I'd seen the visiting team -- the Saint Paul Saints -- but it was back in their Northern League Days when Mike Veeck owned the team. Either way, this was outstanding baseball in a wonderful environment. As I've mentioned in other ballpark reviews, I'm a former broadcaster who has seen hundreds of baseball games at all levels across the country. Though I've been to plenty of MLB games (dating back to the days of Arlington Stadium, Veterans Stadium, Shea Stadium and the former Yankees Stadium), I'm still partial to minor league baseball. Sure, I enjoyed seeing the likes of Juan Gonzalez smashing balls into the parking lot and Curt Schilling striking out 16 Yankees (that was in 1997, and I loved it with all my heart), but seeing players who are trying to make it to the show -- or trying to make it back, such as so many players on the Mud Hens -- brings me greater joy. Seeing a game in Toledo was a bucket list thing for me, if only because of Jamie Farr's character on MASH. With such a nice little stadium and wonderful baseball to boot, I wish I'd come sooner. A couple of caveats though. First, I've paid less for parking at a Coldplay concert. Further, at least those lots took cards. (These guys only take cash, but I'm sure the parking lot owners report their earnings to the IRS -- NOT!) Secondly, the hot dogs at this park are saltier than the Black Sea. Thank God I took a double dose of Amlodipine! But seriously, I'd come back here in a second.

Attending a show at the BGSU Planetarium is probably the most fun -and cheapest- activity available…read morein Bowling Green. Over the last decade, my wife and I have taken our three children, as well as their various friends, boyfriends, and girlfriends to easily twenty different programs. However, I will admit that I might be a little biased, as the BGSU Planetarium is where I took my wife on our first date back in 1994. If you are familiar, it goes like this ... When you drive to the BGSU campus, park in Lot H, at the corner of East Merry Avenue and North College Drive, which is right in front of the Psychology Building. The sign says Faculty / Staff Parking Only, but planetarium shows are late enough that in 25 years we have never once gotten a ticket. The walk from Lot H to the Physical Sciences Laboratory Building will take you approximately 90 seconds. If you are not sure which building to aim for, go towards the one that has the giant, 2-story high white golf ball in front of it: that is the dome of the planetarium. The building entrance is located immediately past the dome, just follow the sidewalk. On entering the building, you will be greeted by either a student operator, Dr. Smith (the planetarium director since 1983), or both. As they hand you a program for the night's show, they will tell you that the best seats are the in back. This advice is very true, and to get the most of your show, you should sit as far back in the planetarium as you can get (we try to get there early, in order to score seats in the last row). At the designed time, Dr. Smith will step to the centre of the room where he will explain the layout of the planetarium, then the student console operator will douse the lights and Dr. Smith will give the audience a brief tour of the night sky. After pausing for questions, the show will start using the full-dome video projectors. Once the show itself is over, Dr. Smith will take questions from the audience on all topics relating to astronomy, astrophysics, and planetary exploration. Then, if the night sky is clear, he will invite the audience to join him for a stargaze on the roof of the building, often using the university's .5 meter telescope. The weather at the 6th floor roof is both cooler and much windier than it is on the ground, so be sure to dress appropriately! Happy stargazing!

My family and I went to the Toledo Repertoire Theatre on our trip to watch Amadeus…read more The play was wonderfully acted, especially by the actor who played Antonio Salieri. This play gives a fictional account of the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, imagining a rivalry between the two at the court of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
