My view of the playing field.
    Joyce G.

Visited 4/22/16 Came here to watch a lacrosse game. Been here before. Stands are clean. Multiple places to sit. Parking several places around the campus. Close to the field. Went to HS here in the 80's. At that time it was predominantly Caucasian. I was part of the handful of Asian. The HS was very good. Curriculum and teachers challenging. I don't know about now.

The arts specialists and teachers have integrated the arts into the curriculum which spurs creative thinking, imagination and new ideas from all of the children. My son is now in a public Middle School and doing so well, despite the jump in the amount of students and the different teaching approaches. LFCSA did him well. The teachers, staff and administration are incredibly hard working and wonderful at their jobs. And I think the front desk does an amazing job of guiding parents without over-engaging and getting distracted from their jobs helping run the school. While there are sound issues, the administration and school board have found some fairly good temporary solutions while working towards the (more expensive) permanent ones. But the space itself is wonderful and inspiring. I see in other reviews a complaint about the need to constantly raise money for the school. In no way is anyone ever required to donate anything towards the school. But the special things about this school (not including a parking lot and and amazing building), including programs such as the Artists in Residence, Professional Development for the teachers, Aides to help on the playground and in the classrooms, supplies, field trips, other special programs and more all cost a LOT OF MONEY and are not supported by LAUSD, the City, County or State.. So if you do not or can not help in fundraising, I plead you to contact your City Councilperson, your State Representatives, your Governor, and your President and let them know that public schools like Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts need much more monetary support. I am happy to say that my children love to learn and love to go to school, and I give LFCSA the credit for that.

I'm kicking myself for taking so long to move him. I wish I had done it earlier in his education.

Our experience at Renaissance Arts has been really good. This school is different, and personally,…read moreI am thankful. My son told me, "There are no bullies at Ren Arts". I can see why. The staff is strict and they somehow manage to do what our previous school was not able to do - keep the kids feeling safe. When my kids started, I sat in on many of the classes to help one of my kids adjust. Almost every day for a year I went to the first 2 classes. In a large 8am singing class meant (I imagine) to gather the kids together and provide structure while stragglers arrived, I watched the teacher nip every potential behavior problem in the bud with, "I hear someone talking. If someone is talking while X is asking a question, then we can't hear X's important question". Or, "If you aren't participating then we are missing your voice. We need your voice". Everything here is based on the idea of an ensemble. And the importance of the individual within the ensemble is stressed. The ensemble performances that they do twice a year are truly amazing. Imagine being thrown in with different groups of students in your school twice a year to perform. Part of the reason there is no bullying is that you bond with your fellow cast members. There are some overarching mission statements that you see over and over again that are unique and heartwarming. For example, although there are no tests, they have a lot of essays to write where the kids have the opportunity to express themselves. They are told that there is not right or wrong answer and they just want to hear their ideas. They are often asked to reflect on themes and the teachers don't feel like they have "the answer", but rather are excited to hear what the kids come up with. It feels like college level teaching. To me, this is exciting stuff! I sat in on a second grade humanities class and felt like I was in college: a group of 8 kids plus a teacher sat around the table and discussed King Lear. The kids had so much to say about the age-appropriate rendition of what they were reading. The school also has a social justice bent and the themes of their shows often reflects current events. One of the high school students told me that they read the constitution every year in high school and every time she finds something new. So yes, there is much here that is going to look different from your typical school. It functions differently and so the form will be inherently different. I feel that as long as the child is happy, that is the best gauge of the fit of the school. And my kids are happy here.

We, as a staff, all understand the importance and value of a neighborhood public school that provides high standards and a safe, nurturing environment. We do our best every day to provide our students with the skills and instruction they need to flourish. The community is full of wonderful, loving people invested in their children's future. I have had the pleasure of fostering and maintaining great relationships with parents with whom I share a common goal: the happiness and success of their children. Every teacher and administrator I work with values our students and parents above all else. We know that the only way to achieve results is to work as a team. I am a proud member of this team, and hope to be a part of this proud community for years to come.

Principals and yard staff are so obviously biased about punishing kids it's funny. The school does educate kids on academics but not to ever use a single ounce of their brain to clean up after themself. Some examples: 1. Bathroom had the fattest turd in it that a snobby kid left to not flush 2. Little gremlin kids slob around all the lunch tables I swear to whatever god is up there these kids cannot fathom how to actually be hygienic and keep the campus clean. Also, the school kind of looks like a prison. Theres barely any grass most of the campus is just asphalt it's so depressing. My favorite experiences were Science School (which you have to wait the entire time you are at the school for) and the teachers that are chill. To a student currently attending this school, I hope you enjoy or enjoyed pre-k to 3rd grade because everything in your life will crumble down to dust before meaninglessly blowing away into the wind. Kids will discover trends or stereotypes one way or another. And to the teachers that are actually chill I wish you the best in everything that comes to this school.

The parents are involved and they truly care - they volunteer at events, donate to the annual fundraiser (which pays for all the extras at this school that help make it so wonderful). There is a genuine sense of community here that goes a long way, and the kids can feel it too. Academically I'd say it's average, not too much homework but not soft on academics by any means. Most learning is done in classroom with light homework (mostly reviewing the days lesson) in upper grades. We've never had a bullying problem or anything that some other reviews mention. I've never doubted my son's safety at this school. He's made many wonderful friends here. We're sad to be moving on to middle school next year. We will miss you MWE!! Go Wolves!

St. Bernard is a great school!…read more I actually teach the after-school Enrichment program at St. Bernard through Carney Educational Services. This was my first year teaching the program at a private school and I loved it! I went to public school my whole life, but this school makes me want to put my future kids in private school some day! There was a brand new principal this year, Ms. Samaniego, and I must say that she is the most involved, open-minded and caring principal that I have ever met! Growing up, I don't remember seeing my principal around very often, but Ms. Samaniego involves herself with the students, parents and faculty every chance she gets. She will serve lunch to the kids, walk them out to their parents car after school, and even set up chairs in the hall! She's always running around, but it's so great to see a principal with so much energy and passion for the students and the school! As an after-school teacher, I only see what goes on after school, but I've met all of the teachers and they care about the success of the students. At Carney, we work hand-in-hand with the principal and faculty to make sure that the students gain the best education that they can and become unique and successful individuals. Even the parents AND grandparents are great! Everyone works together to create an exciting and supportive learning environment for these kids. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to be apart of the school this year. Myself and the Carney Site Coordinator tried to be as involved as we could by going to their annual fashion show luncheon, Kindergarten and 8th grade graduation, volleyball games, and we even put on the first Carney-Val for Halloween. The energy at the school is contagious and you can't help but get involved. I highly recommend this school to anyone interested in private schools. It is definitely a school to look in to.
