I'm quite surprised to be the first to review this beautiful and very well kept-up riverfront park…read more We stayed at McMenamin's Kalama Harbor Lodge this past weekend, and Louis Rasmussen Day Park is adjacent to the Lodge. My husband and I were surprised by how much we liked this park. We were also surprised by how much this park has to offer. It has wide walking paths with beautiful waist-height light posts lining one of the paths for when it gets dark - very romantic! The river view is really nice. There are lots of trees, 2 covered areas with several picnic tables under each one, horseshoe-throwing sand pits, tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, several sandy river-front areas, and 2 beach-volleyball courts. Also within Louis Rasmussen Day Park is Ahle's Point Cabin, a small, gorgeous, wood-paneled restaurant/bar with 2 fireplaces (1 indoor & 1 outdoor), a patio overlooking the river which is a nice place from which to watch the sunset, and a variety of games to play if you're in a game-playing mood, from cribbage to chess. I'll review Ahle's Point Cabin (which is a part of McMenamin's) more extensively on its own separate listing, but for the purposes of this review, the cabin really adds a lot to this already impressive park. This park has 3 signs saying that: 1. Beachfront hours are from 5am - 9pm. 2. There is no camping or overnight staying at this park. 3. No alcohol is allowed in this park. The public bathrooms in this park are easily accessible - they're near the basketball courts and the tennis courts - and they're very clean, well-kept-up for outdoor bathrooms, and well-stocked with toilet paper and paper towels. To my surprise, I noticed a full walk-in shower at the back of the women's bathroom. However, the shower was out-of-order at the time of my visit. Do note that this park is a stone's throw away from a busy amtrak train track and close enough to I-5 to clearly read the exit signs on that freeway. However, don't let that deter you from visiting this lovely park. We saw couples, teenagers, families with small kids, 20-somethings, and elderly folks enjoying their time there yesterday. This is a delightful park for a stroll along the river, a chat seated on a park bench, watching a sunset from the Ahle's Cabin patio, a picnic, or a fun game of basketball, horseshoe-throwing, tennis, or beach volleyball.

Hello Everyone!…read more Please know that the park is NOT a campground. It is for DAY USE ONLY. Several signs are throughout the park that note that fact. Before Bratton Canyon Park was handed over to Clark County by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources in 2011, it was operated as a campground. However, there are no foreseeable plans to turn it back into one. A park host is always on site to answer any questions about this or if you have other concerns. Always happy to help! Security and safety is taken very seriously at this park. All suspicious behavior is reported to authorities and law enforcement does respond. THERE ARE NO FIRES OF ANY KIND ALLOWED. This includes but not limited to campfires, propane or charcoal barbecues, fire pits, and anything else with an open flame. This is stricter than County regulations and for the safety of visitors, park host, and surrounding residences. Please help keep our park safe by following the rules. Anyone breaking those rules will be told to leave the park. The remaining camping barbecues that were left in the park are not maintained or cleaned for public use. Running water in the park is at the park host site only and it is not potable. Electricity is only at the park host site and the only location in the park with lights. Due to the dense tree coverage and for safety of park visitors, the park hours for opening and closing do vary, based on light and weather conditions. Opening is generally 8:00am year round and closing is approximately 15 to 20 minutes before sunset based on the season. This has been as early as 4pm in winter to as late as 9pm in summer. The park has one vault toilet that is open and it is next to the parking area and closest to the picnic pavilion, horseshoe pits, and (one netted basket) basketball court. Poles are on either side of the court for a volleyball or tennis net, but you need to bring your own. There are other buildings within the park, but they are locked for safety reasons. Trash bins are located in the parking area, next to the vault toilet, and at the picnic pavilion. Please do your part to keep the park clean. Contrary to other website pictures, this park does not have a lake or river running through it. A small seasonal creek exists on the west side but is not accessible. Several dirt trails wind through the 80 acre forest park and provide visitors with hiking and horseback riding opportunities. Horse trailer parking is available, so bring your horse. A gravel and dirt road that circles through the park is good for bicycle riding. A great place to find peace and quiet among the birds. ABSOLUTELY NO ATV OR OFF ROAD/MOTOCROSS MOTORCYCLES! They are NOT ALLOWED! This is posted and violators will risk a very hefty fine per county regulations. Do not climb the trees or disturb the natural beauty of the plant and animal life in the park. UPDATE: This is a response to a review regarding horses in the park. They are allowed and there is no sign saying otherwise. Please keep in mind that this is a natural park. The road in from the main road is gravel and dirt. The trails are dirt. This is Western Washington and rain mixed with dirt will make mud. The horses and their owners are a small fraction of the visitors to the park and not the only ones using the trails. Visitors have included dogs and even pack goats. Please dress accordingly for your hiking comfort and needs. This is also a response to a previous review about someone not feeling comfortable walking their dog in the park. The person incorrectly assumed that the loose dogs were the ones belonging to the park host. They never allow their dogs to run loose, they are never outside by themselves, and they are always under control. If anyone ever has a safety issue or sees other dogs off their leashes in the park, please contact the park host. They want everyone to have a great experience in the park. Thank you!

The boat launch is on the opposite side of the road from the park. There is a fair amount of open grassy space to let the kids run around or play frisbee, etc. We didn't see any BBQ grills but they do have a hot coals disposal area if you want to bring your own portable grill. There were several people fishing along the river when we stopped by and saw one family playing in a small sandy area along the river. The river current is quite swift in the section by the park because of some curves in the river, so I wouldn't advise allowing small children to wade in the water here as they could easily be swept away, and because of this I'm not sure if swimming is even allowed (I didn't see mention of it on their website, but don't recall what the local signage said).

When the water is high in May and June is the best time to see the swiftlets gliding around the water as the fly towards the nests they have built on a nearby abandoned floating shed.. If you are new to kayaking this would be the place to start you have lots of local long-timers who have become experts willing to pass on their knowledge and the staff is friendly and helpful also. They have a small picnic area and a hiking trail (that was mostly submerged in the Columbia) and a small swimming area. 10/10 would recommend:)

Other than a more crowded location on the weekends, I have no no negative things to say about this awesome place There is a daily fee to park in their parking lot, but it's minimal for an all day pass ($3). You can also rent kayaks/SUPs from the Next Adventure location located at Scappoose Bay. There is also a place to load/unload and dock boats on a more long-term basis as well. The views of Mount Saint Helen's are great and you can see so much wildlife when kayaking around through the inlets. I've seen bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, deer, turtles and even a cow once! on my last visit, there was an abandoned ship in an inlet to investigate as well. You can spend time exploring the different in loads or the former appears on the banks or you can paddle straight to the Columbia for a more "action" on the water. If you kayak, this is a must-visit place in the Portland area!
