Having only visited here a handful of times, I considered myself pretty clueless about Columbus so I googled city tours and found Capital City Tours. I was interested in the City Overview Tour. So, I emailed the owner, Jean, and she was very prompt in getting back to me with available times, which, fortunately, fit our schedule. My in-laws live in a suburb of Columbus, so they joined my husband and me for the tour. Jean was very sweet, especially with making some special accommodations for my semi-handicapped father-in-law. Anyway, if you're looking to move here - or have lived here all your life, even - this tour is a must-see. Jean has been here 50 years and knows SOOOO much about the history of the city and its various eclectic neighborhoods! And, she's very witty, and had us laughing a good bit. An excellent time was had by all! The tour costs $25 per person, which was more than fair, I think. Her van was impeccably clean and she even used a little microphone while speaking during the tour. At first I thought the microphone might be overkill, but I'm glad she used it because my husband, who sat in the back, could hear her very well. The tour lasted a little over 2 hours. I was so happy I found Jean. I got to see parts of the city I may not have been ready to explore on my own, including Victorian Village, German Village, downtown, Franklintown, OSU's campus, and several others. She has experienced a lot and READ a lot in her 50 years here. It makes me want to learn even more about this great city I will soon call home. And it makes me want to get here all the quicker! The bus we took was only 2 years old and was awesome! Our drivers were incredibly friendly and easy to work with! I can't count how many times they told me that it's my trip and they would do whatever that I need from them. The American Interstate had a malfunctioning bathroom--apparently the lavatory would not flush and they had a serious problem with the venting--it vented into the bus. The charter was from Columbus to Louisville and back for the Derby. Imagine spending nine hours in a filthy port-a-john--the entire bus reeked. To the driver's credit he cleaned the bathroom and cleaned the tanks while the group was at the Derby but it was no use. Why does American Interstate allow a coach like this to be used by customers? If they will allow a coach with such an obvious problem operate, what other problems are they ignoring?

Becky, our guide, is quite familiar with Dublin having been a shopkeeper for a number of years in the old district. She knew all the stories. She started out with some history on the founding of the town of Dublin then proceeded to tell us of all the sightings and happenings in the old area. We walked from the library to just past Biddie's Coach House to the cemetery behind the library. It was a nice leisurely walk with lots of stops. Anyone who likes ghost stories and/or likes local history will enjoy this tour.

We checked in at the desk when we arrived and they welcomed us to step into factory space. The tour guide was very funny and engaging, joking with the kids. He provided an overview of the company and the history of both it and how whistles used to be made. We then walked around and looked at some of the machinery, some of which they were able to demonstrate in action in front of us, others which had some footage prepared that we observed on a large screen. At the end, there was the option to put together your own whistle by selecting two different halves (same or different colors, a huge selection including glow in the dark) and even the round pea color for inside, then used the machine to put it together quickly. They also have a small shop where you can purchase additional whistles and accessories. Quite an interesting visit! Note that parking is around back for the tours - a gravel lot with some very large potholes to watch out for.
