People were extremely friendly, encouraging, and supportive. Instructors remembers your name after one class and corrects your form if it's not accurate so you don't hurt yourself and teaches you how to kick/punch better. Even the students there were so helpful as it was my first time and was willing to spend a few minutes here and there to correct my form. Scheduling classes was easy as there is an app to shows the schedule of various classes. Also, the place is clean is because there are no shoes on the mats. One thing I didn't like was that there are no lockers in the changing room and it's just a place to change and store your belongings. However, it was safe to leave your belongings there as you are working out. Would love to go back again!

I was recently trying to rejoin the world of martial arts after a long time of being out of the…read moreloop. I had zero grappling experience and felt like Bjj was the absolute perfect art to fill said gap. I reached out via email and got a quick reply by voicemail and then by text. They were willing to answer all of my questions, even questions about the rates, contract, fees etc. They answered ALL of my questions AT the initial point of contact, which I very much appreciated and showed a stellar level of customer service on their part. So I showed up for my first introductory class, and as someone who's got plenty of experience in martial arts, I was looking for things that might be worth making note off: the equipment (such as the standing body-bags that the kickboxing class use for training) appeared to be in good shape, the mats weren't dusty or with any obvious debris and the place seemed generally to be very clean from the mats to the lockerrooms and bathroom. The instructers were all very kind to work with me and help me to develop my technique and understanding of what it is I'm getting myself into. It was a good class with great people, no doubt. The only thing I didn't like is the hard-sale strategy to sign the contract. That was why I couldn't continue, even though I really wanted to. Had I been presented with the contract differently, it's quite possible I'd be fully enrolled into my first month's classes right now. But they pitch HARD... for example, I wanted to take at LEAST two introductory classes before making a final decision, and I wanted to sleep on it. A 7 month contract (and that's just the ENTRY LEVEL contract which you are likely going to be asked to renew to a year contract in a few months once you're ready for advanced classes) is a big commitment when you're spending $219 a month, which they state is completely inflexible, regardless of income or situation and must be paid EVERY MONTH... no... matter... what... sick? Doesn't matter. Injured for under 6 months? Doesn't matter. You gotta pay). There are ways to get out of the contract, but ultimately, I was given the vibe of "but if you have an issue you will just call the company that handles our payments... they deal with that stuff" Still, this wasn't enough for me to rule me out. I still wanted it and could "kind of" afford it. The issue was that hard-sell. I am a salesman for a living and I can tell when someone is trying too hard to sell something. I see it everyday from my own coworkers and I respect them for it. Honestly I respect them for it here also. They need money. They are a business. It makes sense and there is nothing wrong whatsoever with that. The only issue though it is was the wrong approach for me and I felt like they should've felt my energy on that. I told them I was uncomfortable and wanted to take a second class and make a decision. Rather than saying something along the lines of "go... take the second class... and let me know what you think. If you need more time, that's okay. When you're ready, we'll be here and we'll be happy to have you as a part of the community "(what probably would've had me come back for AT LEAST a month trial). But what actually happened when I said this, is the gentleman seemed slightly disappointed and even slightly frustrated. He then replied, "... cool okay, but if you do this, I would REALLY need you to get back here right after so we can go over paperwork." It wasn't even subtle. It seemed too desperate. I kept replaying this in my mind, as a salesperson, thinking "man they really as desperate to get the sale..." I've seen it hundreds of times. The face when one of my collegues or even I can't close a sale... the emotion behind the reaction. It was all there and it was clear. No denying it. He wanted that paperwork SIGNED and I get why. It's a business, and businesses need money in order to operate. ... but I had to take a star for that... I was not comfortable and was even a little nervous specifically and only because the person working with me had too hard of a sales pitch. It made me decide that maybe this isn't the right choice for me right now and it unfortunately lead to me asking for cancellation before a single business day had passed. But on the plus side... these are all good people. They are trying to run a good business and have a good culture. I'd be happy to be a part of their community and would even recommend these guys if anyone asks. Everything seemed almost perfect about that place. The only thing that didn't work for me was the sales-pitch and the contract inflexibility. I probably woudln'tve noticed any of this stuff if I wasn't a salesperson myself so don't let my words make you look down on these guys. The world needs as much truth as possible these days, though which is why I had to write this review. Gave me some free gear, treated me with respect and gave me a good lesson; give em a shot

I don't have a yelp account so I'm using my wife's page to post this review…read more I first took my son in to learn self defense because he was being bullied. When I walked in, I was amazed at the discipline the kids, some as young as 6 years old lined up and standing at attention. I also noticed how Sensei levy paid attention to each child as the if they were the only one in the room. My son took a trial class and loved it. A month later I was asked to take a free trial class myself. I was 43 out of shape, over weight with high cholesterol diagnosed with moderate coronary arterial disease so I was looking to improve my lifestyle. I took the intro class And was hooked from that moment on. I lost 40 pounds in just a few months. I looked and felt great. After a year I stopped taking my medication but kept on training. I would go to my doctor and he would give me a good report and a refill on my dosages. After a few years of sticking to a routine I went to my doctor, got the same good report and a refill. I gave the doc back the rx and told him "I don't need this anymore I have been off the medication for years." He asked me what I was doing to replace the meds and I told him it was a dedication to regular training. The doctor could not believe it but said keep doing what your doing. The staff at Tiger Schulmann Bay Ridge is amazing. The talk the talk but walk the walk as well. The motivate by leading by example. Fast forward 10 years from my son and my first class. I am no longer a 52 year old. I now feel and look half my age. I am a black belt in mma. I have been consistent with my training through out the last 10 years. My son is still training and is the anti-bully. He walks around confidently and has the discipline of a man beyond his years. I spent a lot of time growing my son up to be a man I could be proud of. I have Sensei Levy and the staff of Tiger Schulmann to thank for helping me grow him up well.

Thank you Joshu Elaine, Jeremy Garcia, Anthony, Wilson, Sensei Levy and many others!! Special thanks to Diana for her energy and Jeremy for his jokes!! I'm not exaggerating when I say I make an effort to come in after a rough 14 hr shift, or 24 hrs postcall (by taking a Uber from the hospital) to make it to class on time. If anyone is looking for a gym to call home or the best investment of a lifetime (YOUR HEALTH) or a cool place to train w your kids (only if you're into raising adorable courageous kind kids), this is your place! Your technique will be impeccable (after earning stripes and questioning every class whether you're dripping sweat or tears) as you keep coming back for more! P.S. I'm secretly (but also openly) hoping the gym will expand to GA...a girl can dream. until we meet again!!

I only take the Shotokan Karate basic (all belt) classes and I take kickboxing weekly. I have past experience in Kwon Soo Do (brown belt ages 10-14) but have not practiced in...about...20...years. I feel welcomed by this dojo that is a family. Shihan Dunn and all the senseis, sempais, and belts are helpful, encouraging, and in no way trying to force you to go past what you can do. I have medical issues so yes, some things are harder. It is NOT FORCED for you to do exactly what everyone else does. They expect you to TRY and IMPROVE at your own pace. The belts have tips. After a certain amount of classes, you get a change of color tip. Then after a few of those, you are eligible for your next belt. However, let me make this clear. IT IS NOT ABOUT THE TIPS OR THE NEXT BELT. Progression, improvement, working to better yourself and others. Yes, you can strive to be the next great black belt but the point is put as much as you can, better yourself, and move forward. Gene Dunn's Shotokan Karate Dojo is not about winning medals or speeding to the black belt or even about flashy moves. It is about you and your relationship with yourself and others. Recommended for all ages, young and old. Recommended for experienced and non-experienced martial artists. Recommended for getting into shape or improving until you are Bruce Lee (Yes that is Kung Fu....)
