Wow. On both sides of the Atlantic we all know what to expect at the rest stop or motorway services - anywhere from grungy and run down to updated and bright, maybe very basic fast food with minimal service to somewhat higher standard plus a shop or two with some food basics and snacks. BUT would you expect a shop/supermarket with full service butcher, fresh baked bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, countless tempting cakes, fresh flowers and plants, wide variety of beers and ciders, many wines, champagnes, gins and so much more - I think not! But at this service stop by the motorway this is exactly what you get!! A Wholefoods or Gelmans (for you Americans) or actually even better - a farmers market with all the trimmings - Wow!! I would say unique but it isn't - I asked and there are 3 more - a second (I assume) identical one on the Southbound side of the M5 motorway and two more elsewhere in Gloucestershire. Needless to say - two thumbs up! Sadly I just wish there was one closer to home! read more

Amazing place to stop on the motorway! They have a great variety and selection of hot food, pastries, and the best fish n chips, soup & drinks, etc. There's also a lovely enclosed pond in the back and a fantastic play area for kids. I like the philosophy behind this motorway service too - it's a company that partnered with the local Gloucestershire charity and so they have a farm shop that sells local produce and also donates money back to the local community as well as provides jobs for the local youths. Food wise, I can absolutely recommend the Fish n Chips - it's a massive plate for around £10 and definitely shareable! The roasted butternut squash soup was delicious. We also got the Red Dragon pie, which was vegan and gluten free and very yummy! To end, we had a delicious pot of tea and marvelous scones. In the farm shop, I especially recommend checking out and getting the local milk and the cheese selection. Right now they have the 2018 winner in the soft cheese selection (Renegade Monk for £8) Also the cakes have good ingredients - we purchased the Orange Marmalede Tea cake and it was very tasty. These newly opened services are family run together with the Gloucester Youth Trust and any monies made are put back into Gloucester:)- which explains why there are no burger chains or well known coffee shops, but a big light bright space with loads of fresh sandwiches, cakes and salads. The shop also sells fresh farm produce-there is a butcher and cheese counter, as well as high quality gifts. The toilets were clean and there were event showers. However, I think in the middle of summer this place could get full quickly as the car park wasn't that big! There was excitement about this services, my family really like Farm Shops and we have other family in the Gloucester area so this was perfect. First impressions of this services is how different if looks from other services. The shop blends into the landscape yet when you enter there is so much space. The space is cleverly divided between the farmshop with butcher and deli service, then centre focal point is the restaurant with glass wall by the seating area at the back, then to your right a quick coffee stop. I really like what they stock in the shop as it includes proper cider with some at reasonable prices. Though farm shops can be overpriced there are a few cheaper things you can buy. My family really like the lamb pin wheels. We have yet to go to the restaurant but have recently used the coffee shop where i had a giant latte for a reasonable cost. read more

Driving home up the M5 from Dorset (I went via Clarks Village, hence going back on the M5), I saw a sign for Gloucester Services and underneath it said "Farm Shop". Suddenly I got very tired and thought I should have a break! It looks very low key, not like your usual services (I'm thinking of you, Oxford) and it seems almost TARDIS-like in that it's bigger on the inside. The farm shop prides itself on local produce, with breads and pastries, meats and cheese, as well as ales and ciders all coming from the local area. There's a good selection of chocolate (always important), from the Cotswolds to Montezumas as well as a lots of gifts and clothing too. There's also the usual selection of magazines, soft drinks and snacks but the focus is very much on the local produce, which is great. I had a snack too, just a scone and a soft drink but the homemade cheese scones on offer are possibly the best I've tasted, yes, even better than National Trust ones. Oh and the loos are nice and clean too! read more

Pulling into this station I immediately sense a difference. The approach road is sensibly laid out with clear signage, vs the maze of poorly maintained diversions around many other motorway stops. Then I enter the building, a high airy space, flooded with natural light. No canned music, no adverts on every wall, no brands, just the sound of the waterfall in the outdoor seating area - this is a place I can actually relax and leave refreshed for the onward journey. Prices for food are comparable to other service stations, but unlike the others you won't leave feeling ripped off. Quality ingredients from local farms freshly prepared on site. I had an excellent cooked breakfast. There is also a farm shop selling local produce, meat and groceries. I wish all service stations were like this. read more

Just awesome. Such a difference from normal services. Very very clean. Well maintained. Toilets where you don't leave feeling dirtier than you went in! Food that is fresh and high quality. I could go on but these services were a genuine breath of fresh air. Also very family orientated - designed to be used by families stopping off on a long journey with family room toilets low urinals and sinks and hand dryers. There is also a lovely outside lake area. The farm shop would be somewhere I would genuinely choose to stop off at to purchase food gifts or for a special occasion - I will probably plan to do exactly that prior to Christmas. This place deserves to succeed and puts other service stations to shame. read more

On the whole a very good service station. The two areas that let it down were waiting times for and the quality of the hot food. Several people in the queue left and got a packet of crisps because they got so fed up. Other than that it is hard to fault. read more
